Kimchi
Kimchi has surpassed the status of a traditional food to become the most recognizable symbol of Korean culture. Every year, mothers all over the countryside of Korea roll up their sleeves to make kimchi to send to their children in the city.
We visit a woman in Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province, as she makes kimchi. Through the love contained in her kimchi and the sounds of kimchi in its creation process, we glimpse at the sentiments and spirits of Korea.

한국의 전통음식을 넘어서 이제는 한국 문화를 대표하는 아이콘으로 자리 잡은 김치, 올 해도 어김없이 도시에 사는 자식들을 위해 '김장' 하시는 시골의 어머니들이 있다.
강원도 홍천군의 한 할머니의 김장날, 김치에 담긴 어머니의 사랑을, 김치를 담그며 나는 소리들을 통해 한국의 정서를 소개한다.
So, sad. I cried through the entire video. My Mom past away last year. Seeing this lady cook for her children reminds me of how my Mom used to cook for me.

I always feel sad when I see old people living by themselves, especially this grandma lives on a cold mountain. Her hands and skin are the evidence of the hard work and hard life she had when she was younger, I literally was crying when the narrator said the smoke was the place for her to disguise her tears. Kimchi is such a meaningful food that defines the love of the Korean families. I hope she has a good life, she reminds me of my grandma...

Yes, it made me cry as well...I am very much American, but I so loved Korea and its people, that it truly became part of me for all these years, since I came home from there. That was a long time ago now...my husband was in the Army and we were there from 1973 and returned to the US in 1974...now, I am old like this woman here. Seems so hard to think that it has been so many years ago now, it has stayed with me everyday in my life though and I still make and eat kimchi and rice, even today. I will always love and treasure my time there.

It literally cried, seeing grandma in this condition why she needs to live alone I hope her daugthers visit her atleast twice a week so that she can rest and bond with them. Be healthy granny and Godbless you.

Watching this old lady just makes me want to be able to speak fluent Korean and maybe help her out if I were closeby in the area. What a lovely grandma. I imagine listening to her stories whilst helping her clean up her yard and in the household and maybe perhaps get some culinary secrets and a warm hug in return.
These are the eyes and hands of a woman who went through a lot in her life. She witnessed the Korean war and terrible hardship and poverty and did her best to ensure that her children and grandchildren have a better life.
Considering that this video was released in 2013, I hope that she is still alive and well.

I feel proud cos as an old woman staying alone is a great courages and freedom efforts same as Japan old people stay their own enjoy freedom nature with harmony , as I am approaching this age of 58 years old , this give me strength to be strong and independent even my children stayed with me but I need own strength to continue doing choirs daily , I am glad to do so hoping till 100 years old still going strong, peace

부모가 자식과 부모 하고 그 자식이 또 부모와 자식 뒷바라지 하면서 사는게 인간 순환인데 지금은 그 순환 고리가 끊어져버렸어 장성한 자식은 부모 뒷바라지를 안해 지들이 절로 큰 것처럼

When I seen old people living alone I feel so sad because I thinks when they sick / accident they feel whats I feel I'm crying. when they live alone will be lonely so they miss them family. but so lucky this grand-ma have more friend kkkkk

im so greatful to ever stayed at my grandparent's wooden house before my parents built them a concrete one. and food in the village was so fresh and really good, it was warm in a cool brazen hill. everything was just like this video

That traditional home-made kimchi? It is mouth watering, as I imagine the authentic taste of it.
From Philippines here, kimchi is now quite common in our country as we, Filipinos, learned to love the taste and has learned to make kimchi -- though, one can call it copycats. But nothing beats the authentic traditional taste of Korean kimchi. ❤⚘🍾🥂
