Thank you as always! An American original and a 'great', no qualification needed. His early work was likely an influence on the Australian painter Gareth Sansom, still painting and highly underrated.
Loren, you're an institution at this point. Please stand by while we present you a medal of honor for your all your good civic deeds. THANK YOU! Please live a long and healthy life and keep this up for another 30 years!
wow, Saul's style is undeniably fresh in 2020 even with all the overt psychedelic comic influence. Something very max ernst fireside angel going on here. Big thanks kate for this one.
I'd rather watch these videos online than go to the shows. wonderful having a tour of this show with your knowledge of art history and new york scene. I will definitely be seeing this one in person though. gotta love Peter Saul. James, have you ever done a tour of the new york cuny school open studios? I'm an MFA student at Brooklyn College and I spoke to Archie Rand about your tour of his show and how it was a great way to see a show that would otherwise not exist to me. thanks again for the content!
Hey @James Dunbar , yeah, I've toured Brooklyn College and seen the open studio show (years ago), I've visited most of the local art schools at one time or another, Hunter, SVA, New York Studio School, The Arts Student's League, and the New York Academy, sometimes even being asked to lecture and critique. As for Archie, he's a gem. Make sure your stay in touch with him, and listen to what he's trying to pass on...Good Luck.
James I was hoping you’d cover this tremendous show. I’m ordering up the catalogue. We don’t see much of his brilliant work over here in London. Thanks again and a big thank you to Kate!
the early work is genius... the use of colour and composition, the sheer, in your face originality. Then to find they weren't painted last week, but 60 years ago, was astonishing. After a while I had overdosed on it and found it got tedious as the juvenile political sentiment took over. The way he filled the canvas with that corrugated metal subway train in one painting, was wonderful, despite its High School politics
Thank you so much for covering this show James. Could you possibly do a video on the new Baselitz/Basquiat show at Skarstedt gallery, please? Thank you for all the magnificent work you do.
Most of the paintings over there have seem to have the same general composition: a large, broad, clothes iron shape (or call it a slanted, here and there curved, trapezoid......or a big boot shape, a boat) in the middle. ....Or well, at least, in all cases everything pretty much solidly floats around the center. I'm not sure what to think. Fun colors.
Your intro of a one arm guitar player seemed really appropriate for a review of Saul's painting . Saul's paintings being disfigured and grotesque, yet beautiful in an odd way .
Hi James, I was thinking how difficult the situation must be for you and your wonderfull artupdates, hope you can still work on your own Art now, stay HEALTHY dear friend, Turien Holland
Wow, this seems really amazing to me that it was done in the early 60’s. Do you think Basquiat was aware of Saul’s work? There seems to be a lot of similarity.
I was thinking the same thing. I think the ways they both draw and cartoon into their work is similar, although the way they layer paint and select colors are much different. It’s always cool to see other artists inside each other’s work, so long as it’s not blatant plagiarism.
A friend of mine used to play chess with Peter every week and Peter would always bring his kid with him- I guess he's not as good at Chess as Painting because my friend asked him why he always brought the kid he said, "I,"m teaching how to lose well- It's very important" Haha- Pretty good story- not sure it's true.
There is nothing psychedelic about these paintings, in my opinion. They are a bit spoon feeding. Love the colors and the sensibility. He can really take it to where Rauch is, but we have to keep feeding the same energies over and over again. Great video, Thank you
Amazing artist and great video. On the other hand, it's strange that such an amazing artist (and many others) only attack conservative politicians in their work... aren't liberals worthy of ANY ridicule???
Ah! Is this American incorporated satire and humor now diluted and sanitized.? Like most serious subjects in America it is turn into entertainment.........que canned laughter. Regards

I would like to thanks the members of the Academy, my mother, my kids, and most of all Kate...
Thank you James & Kate! Greetings from Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
his early work is fascinating and and feels very contemporary
Oh yeah, art! His sense of composition is fantastic My eyes travel around these things so easily.

Eye bogglingly good!

Thanks a lot James. Really entertaining and interesting. Thought I knew about modern US painting but never heard og seen
This guy. Beatnik, hippie, punk and hip hop at the same time.
Although it is a work from many years ago, it is not out of date to appreciate it today.😀
That's great! Thanks for sharing
Great artist, great video

Thanks again and a big thank you to Kate!
Brilliant show and Artist he makes Picasso's Guernica look tasteful in comparison. I think he is right up there with Goya the horrors of war.

Will you be viewing the Baslitz/Basquiat exhibition at skarstedt?
I'm thinking about it, but have to weigh the benefits against the Corona virus risk....
James: *out of breath* you can see mickey here.
I kind of wonder if Guston saw his early stuff and then decided to go there.

Love the early paintings. All his work is great. He didn't care about pleasing rich art collectors.
I miss NYC...
Hey Jimbo, are you going to take in the "Art on Paper" show? Please.
Hope all is well... I’m hoping/wondering if you’ll be visiting Ellen Berkenblit show at Anton Kern Gallery?
