- James Kalm adores Stuart Davis! This historic exhibition is the first major retrospective for this painter’s work in New York since the Metropolitan Museum’s 1991 survey. Focusing in on Davis’s proto-cubist works, viewers will witness the artistic arc of development from the tobacco paintings, through French Cubism to a radical, jazzy version of what the artist theoretically called “color space” design. Davis not only introduced Americans to cubism, but was also a harbinger of Pop Art, Hard Edge Abstraction as well as textual painting. We’ll get glances of iconic works like “Swing Landscape” “Mellow Pad” and “Little Giant Still Life”. This program was recorded June 8th 2016 at the New Whitney Museum.

You really did him justice. Love the way you zoom in close up, the way I do when at a museum. Thanks, Mr. Kalm, thoroughly enjoyed the talk and the show. Tremendous!
And again I'm here in the comment section - this is by far the best composition of Stuart Davis' work I have ever seen - my third time watching - THANK YOU JAMES!
Thank you for capturing this show. Stuart is one of my favorite artists. In my opinion, his work was also influenced from Matisse's Jazz text.
"Paintings were not representations but they existed themselves." - Stuart Davis
Good quote, James.
Really glad to find your channel! I love Stuart Davis's work and I was there to see this exhibition. It's great to revisit it again. Also watching this video is much more lively than looking at static pictures.
Man thanks for really zooming in and showing us the texture and his strokes character. Appreciate that
I’ve watched this for the second time, it just gets better - What puzzles me is Stuart Davis is such ahead of his time Artist and just as good as it gets, so far and why has he not gotten the recognition he should be getting, If that makes any sense
Among the people who know painting, he is recognized as a master. But nowadays, he's pushed out of the spotlight by artists and institutions who have instrumentalized agendas regarding the market, and political directions that aren't sympathetic to Davis's project.
You're a legend, Loren. This was one of your best videos, but not by much... ALL your videos are such a joy. Much appreciated (y gracias, Kate)!
Thanks for the kind words, @tonsfocus Stuart Davis is a longtime inspiration, and anything I can do to get more people to be aware of him, is a pleasure for me...
Thank you ,from my heart thank you...the sidewalk the music the art your narration...seamless.
Man oh man. Thanks for your passion towards this fantastic fantastic artist. What a legend
30,000 of the 36,424 views on this video are mine! What a great artist Stuart Davis truley was! Thank you James Kalm for whole assing your half ass reports... and Thank you Kate.
Stuart davis is my fave/ thanks for another episode
Love this Video about Stuart Davis! My favorite type of art is Abstract & I have never ever heard about this Artist nor seen his Art.Thanks James!!!
@Thomas Johnson your response makes me happy. Stuart Davis is great, and is a continuing inspiration...Thanks JK
James thank you very very much. Wow, what a show, tremendous painting. He was one step ahead all the time, still dazzling and fresh.
It's a pleasure for me to bring views of great paintings to RUclips...You're welcome.
Fantastic show James! Big fan of Stuart Davis, but it is your narrative that makes these videos so informative and unique. Thank you for all of your hard work!
You're welcome. As a painter, I'm paranoid that the "powers that be" would just as soon see painting forgotten. I feel blessed to be here in New York where there's still a vibrant painting community, and I hope by posting these vids to inspire other members of the tribe to keep painting...
that you do!
Wow! Your hosting was really insightful. You highlighted the very things I would’ve hit upon myself. The thing about Davis is that his work is like a language that I might not speak but have no trouble reading.
Thank you Kate.
James! This was great. I had it e-mailed to some of my artist friends. The time just flew by. Thanks so much.
Love this artist❤
Thank you Kate and thank you James for a video of a wonderful painter, a giant of 20th century American art. I've always loved his work but for some reason he seems to just fall off my radar when he should be front and center. As a sculptor I find tons of sculptural elements, shapes and forms that inspire me. Not that I'd copy them but there are certain juxtapositions of shapes in these paintings that just blow me away in their 3 dimensional possibilities.
Jesus Christ. So good. Thank you so much James. These videos mean the world to my students and I....we are swallowing these videos up deep in SW Missouri. Keep going sir.
Me encantan tus videos. Gracias James!
Wow what a treat! Thanks James.
Great narrative! Thank you!
DUDE! Yeah, I love the work of Stuart Davis too... in fact I made a trip from London to NYC especially to catch this show at the Whitney... I got there for the last two days. One of the unsung heroes of 20th century art... along with his contemporary in the UK, David Bomberg. They both perch on my shoulders when I'm painting... metaphorically speaking!
Great one James. Davis is one of my favorite artist as well.
Thank you for this great video. The speed and tone that you present art is a perfect pace for my brain. I love the art, and without your introduction I'd have never known who Stuart Davis was.
Nicely done.
Thanks for recording this! I love this artist
Fantastic....Thank you so much.
This was a wonderful introduction to the work of Stuart James. My mind has been blown! Davis just had it, whatever it is, he had it! Gifted to the gills. Thanks again Loren and of course Kate! Yall make learning about art fun
great video and a knockout show! nice to see the works in the original period frames too!
I shared this video with several folks. Feedback: Thank you...for this really good video. I haven't thought about Stuart Davis much since my art student days, and this look at the Whitney show makes me realize how great he was.
An American Master, no question.
I loved this. What about the Juan Gris connection? They both have a similar collage technique.
Amazing art and wonderful video tour! Thanks James! :)
James, I think this is one of your best works, I could tell you were really feeling these paintings and I felt like you have a deep connection to Davis. I watched it twice and maybe I’ll watch it a couple more times. I have a great hardback book on Davis but you added valuable insights into the work. Kudos to you sir! And Happy New Year and beyond to you and yours!
P.S. I’m baking a carrot cake today.
And a better and brighter New Year to you too @George McKim...
Thanks James! He's a great one!!!
Yes, yes, and yes...
Amazing artist, thanks so much James for introducing me to these amazing paintings.
Thanks James another killer show and review. The work still seems fresh!
I always wanted to get up close to some Stuart Davis paintings. Thanks a lot!!
Thanks for the great review - almost as good as seeing the show in person.
great close ups show the physicality of these stunning paintings, it's not so apparent in other reproductions. The quality of the think paint is amazing and tricky to do right.
Great vid this guy was amazing
Best one yet I've seen. I learned to pause each picture when in full frame. Minus your commentary unfortunately b/c of sweeping. But Stuart Davis is awesome. It is so easy to see so many artists informed by his work. Basquiat I'm betting strongly influenced by Davis, color, big singular shapes, use of semiotics, composition. Albeit, Davis is so much more formal and joyful than JMB...but the city like in JMB's work is front and center. Better job on camera. Do more good artists. Full frame pause so I can pause to look at full cut of painting please. Sweeping does me little good. Thanks. Awesome show. Love Love Love Stuart Davis.
Great stuff, I’m a big fan of Davis also, would have loved to see these paintings in the real. Thanks, Kate.
Thank you Kate, thank you everybody. Criticism, beautiful music in which is in the tongue of the given Society. So must we relate music with painting?.
When I first saw his piece, Colonial Cubism, I was a fan from that point on!!
Thank you for these wonderful images :-) In the Stedelijk Museum here there is also a Stuart Davis in the collection. ZIPPY!
I didn't think Davis was well known in Europe, at least not enough for Museum recognition.
+jameskalm he even got a big retrospective there back in '98l
Excellent job with the video camera. You have both a steady hand and good focused attention to details. Bravo.
Lest I forget, great commentary -- you know the subject very well.
Thanks Noe, Stuart Davis is one of my all time favorite painters.
+jk/lm -- is it a coincidence that James Kalm precedes Loren Munk in the alphabet? It would have to be the case that you are yourself an artist -- your incisive examination of Davis' work could not be that of a casual cultural tourist. I've been looking at some of your paintings. I really enjoy your “Aesthetic Discomfort Chart.” I know your pain, really I do. The diagrams and maps deserve more of my attention.
thanks man ..this is great !
I had heard of Stuart Davis but had never seen all these works before the video. When I see his work I see the direct line of artists like Nina Chanel Abney that you featured also.
Influence and inspiration is a very important part of art history.
👏 thank you
thanks mate!
Stuart Davis is a favorite of mine as well. Much of the collage style work I've done is heavily influenced by his work. Great vid. P.S. Barbara Haskell is quite the beauty :D
A real pleasure.
I like the paintings, but I can't believe in his cityscapes of Paris that he didn't make use of those incredible chimney pots that are on top of every roof in Paris. Or that he didn't include the chestnut trees throughout the year- they're so outstanding in Paris.
Nice videos as always!, if you were in argentina, more precisely in BsAs, that method that you use of going in bike to the shows , mm man, you would have to think it twice because it will be stolen every time you locked it wherever you go! I salute you man and invite you to come to BsAs to prove what I 'm telling you!
Are there really musicians on every corner in NYC?
So nice
Please cover Justine Hill at Denny Gallery in the LES! it is a great show.
Kalm sounds a little excited about this. But I get it.
super art 111
makes me want to pack up my brushes and do something else
Now you're talk'n!
Best Wishes,
MGTOW
He's unknown in England.
Not true. I've had a couple of books on him, for maybe 20 years now - I got them here in England. Perhaps I should add, outside of London.

Hebbing at ya nearly
Why do you always give money to them so slowly and wave it around for an extended period? Do you need attention and validation that badly?
PLEASE museums! Get rid of these horrible frames that do nothing except make great paintings look like something that should be hanging in some old lady's Ohio living room. I mean, take the friggin' frames off and show them like paintings are shown now and how they were seen when they were painted.
