Nice video and nice pairings Doug. I decided to start using my blue Visconti Opera Typhoon with J. Herbin Bleu Myosotis (forget-me-not blue). Doug, how is Diamine Merlot in terms of wetness? I have a Platinum President Burgundy (EF nib) that looks like it would be a nice pairing. I currently have it inked with Birmingham Pen Independence Gray and it writes smoothly but you can feel the nib on the paper for excellent control.
I haven't found any Diamine inks are are very wet. At least, not like Iroshizuku. The reddish shades of Diamine I have (Ancient Copper, Merlot, Oxblood) tend to be dry.

Yeah Take-Sumi is luscious. If you need black ink you may as well have that nice red sheen. Mine usually lives in a ceramic Jinhao with a branch and cherry blossoms against the white backdrop. Have you tried Tsuki-yo? Probably my favorite ink of all time. I'm on team opposites. Momento Zero Plum with Colorverse Joy in the Ordinary "Brunch Date" - the slightly muted color accentuates the deep purple of the pen... and the cursive italic nib I installed profits as well from it.
Was the nib of the Platinum President stiff for you or was it smooth with that small amount of feedback? I have been eyeing that pen for myself and am just curious.
Yes. The Platinum nibs are as stiff as steel. Not that I care that much about flex. And it is very smooth but has a definite, pencil on paper, feedback.

I do love the diamine inks, in the UK the price is great I mean small, thanks for a fun review, ps My wife's father is famous for the desert full of sugar in a cheap wine trick.
I’ve been looking for a brown ink, and eyeing the Diamine Ancient Copper. I am afraid it may be too red for me, but the Monteverde Brown Sugar I’ve been using is a little too brown/black for me. I love the life you give to your videos with everything you do, and this one was no exception. Great video, thanks!

LOL I was in my local brick 'n mortar pen shop last week picking up my new Narwhal. She put it in a Montblanc bag. I said "I don't own a Montblanc". She said "Yet!" LOL
I'm not fond of blue-black but I just got a bottle of Iroshizuku Shin Kai which looks like it will be beautiful. I have it matched with a new pen that might show up in PPP!
I love blue-blacks, but I'm not adventurous inkwise. Perhaps I might dip my toe into turquoise down the line, because neither just blue or black will do.
I'm surprised that you didn't include something from Monty Python's "Australian Table Wines." 😂 When I can, I try to coordinate the pen and ink for what I am signing something with, but it is generally whatever is next in my rotation. Of course, a lot of my pens are fairly neutral colours...

Well, different strokes for different folks, I guess. Of course, that's why they make nibs in UEF, EF, F, M, broad, stub, cursive italic, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!
You really scare me! Ancient Copper in a hooded pen?! I had this ink in a gushing big pen. Got ill and did not use my fountain pens for almost two weeks. The alien life forms that grew from the Diamine Ancient Copper still give me nightmares sometimes.

LOL I was in my local brick 'n mortar pen shop last week picking up my new Narwhal. She put it in a Montblanc bag. I said "I don't own a Montblanc". She said "Yet!" LOL
There is no way that I can fill my pen with ink at the moment. I’m laughing too hard!
LOL Thank you, Chris!
You're so droll, Douglas! 🍷🧐
Them's fightin' words, Amy! Oh, wait.... thanks.
In blue side of the rainbow, I prefer Iroshizuku's Kon-Peki. But I admit J. Herbin's is a beauty.
Kon-Peki is my all-time favourite teal/blue ink.
Wearing a Tux. Regards, 008.
Thank you for following the dress code! :)
No blue black inks?
I'm not fond of blue-black but I just got a bottle of Iroshizuku Shin Kai which looks like it will be beautiful. I have it matched with a new pen that might show up in PPP!
I love blue-blacks, but I'm not adventurous inkwise. Perhaps I might dip my toe into turquoise down the line, because neither just blue or black will do.
I'm surprised that you didn't include something from Monty Python's "Australian Table Wines." 😂
When I can, I try to coordinate the pen and ink for what I am signing something with, but it is generally whatever is next in my rotation. Of course, a lot of my pens are fairly neutral colours...
Through no plan of my own, my pens are almost exclusively black, gray, silver, and clear.
@@ichirofakename My only real selection of colours in pens are in my Esterbrook pens, and only because I'm trying to get a version of each model and colour from the mid 1930s to the end of the double jewel ones (including purse size pens.)
It was very close to being included, but I only have it as a recording and not in video.
Can we get Vanta black, or is that meaningless for ink?
I thought that was Vanta White? Or is it Vanna?
Sheaffer Imperial with Iro Muji
Platinum 3776 with MB le petit prince
TWSBI VAC 700R with J Herbin Violet
Nice combos!
Love the thumbnail hahaha
LOL Thank you, passthebutter3!
You look extremely dapper Mr Rathbun, and you have some exquisite pairings, but sugar in wine ? Really sir 😖 ✌❤ Rob
LOL It is a sacrilege that wine lovers abhor - like my wife. I don't do it of course, but it was called out of my memory of drinking at my favourite bar when I was in my 20's. This regular patron would order house white wine and pour two packets of sugar into it. OMG!
@@InkquiringMinds bluuuuurrrkkk
Thanks, Doug! I was tickled when you introduced yourself as “Douglas”! I’m sorry - Douglas can NOT play guitar like Doug does in the intro! LOL Lobed these pairings. I definitely need to locate s sample of Iroshizuku Take-sumi (might have one already) and buy Diamine Merlot!!
Rock on!
Why do you have a cravat? lol Great video
Part of the costume I suspect.
I propose *Kiki de Montparnasse* as the next J.Herbin shimmer ink. Better than George Costanza's Seven o Soda (Pop Blue).
I'll look at it!
it would be helpful if you could show the labels of the ink bottles. so that we can write it down the an,of the ink, you do show the bottle but please give a close-up view, also sometimes I find it difficult to write the name of the ink
Good suggestion!
Well, different strokes for different folks, I guess. Of course, that's why they make nibs in UEF, EF, F, M, broad, stub, cursive italic, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!
True!
You are not fooling anyone Doug, we know it’s you.😜I know you’re drinking grape juice!
😆
Concord grapes from the south side of the valley.
You really scare me! Ancient Copper in a hooded pen?!
I had this ink in a gushing big pen. Got ill and did not use my fountain pens for almost two weeks. The alien life forms that grew from the Diamine Ancient Copper still give me nightmares sometimes.
The Waterman Carene is not a hooded nib. But you are right, I would not leave Ancient Copper in a pen that isn't in constant use.
Feeding the algorithm
I thought it was more interesting than that!
When I see ppp I think “potential pandemic pathogen”... once I got past that, loved your video. Kyanite... on the list.
We can see where your head has been, Rose! I think "Power Play Percentage".
Ha ha ha ha (choke) ha!
~grins~
Not the best Cabernet Sauvignon... even with sugar... I prefer drinking Take-Sumi...
LOL
Well that was a pleasure! C'est aussi très amusant de vous entendre parler français. Now I'll dash over to AN INK GUY and listen to his reports on those inks. Many thanks!
Merci, Joan!
I "liked" the video, except the wine part... What would you expect from a screw-capped bottle ? How can we enlight the masses of ballpointed peons around us when exhibiting such bottles of quasi-vinegar ? I am very, very worried about you, sir... 😁
LOL!
