I feel the need to add something really important: in today's capitalistic society people have the ILLUSION that WORKING HARD=MORE MONEY. But that's relative considering that the most hard-working people on earth are the ones (probably children) making our clothes, phones etc. and getting paid something like 1$ / week. Also, a person working a minimum wage job does not always work less hard than an entrepreneur. Making money should not be exclusively associated with working hard, but also with the concept of luck, the circumstances, the country you live in etc. That's also why in the grand scheme of things, money does not and cannot add to your value as a human.
El_ Mi I totally agree, money CAN bring comfort, security, and at some level personal happiness (like being able to travel, or going to eat out once in a while, treating your family members or friends..) but after a certain treshold the well-being money brings declines, and people become bored with the possibilities of it, while consuming more and more.
Exactly. Even having expertise doesn't counterbalance this otherwise doctors would make way more than CEOs. Capitalism relies on the hard labour of low paid workers. The higher up you go the less work is done. I work at a billion dollar media company and I know the chief does less work than those below him.

Throughout the life experience I've managed to gather in my short life on earth, I justify my coffee purchases for the same reason. 1. It makes me happy. If it makes you happy and you can afford it, I believe it is worth the purchase. 2. You are paying for the workspace, environment, and sometimes a little social interaction goes a long way. 3. I would rather be less well-off and social drinking good espresso than ~slightly more well-off~ alone drinking something cheap. The thing is that if you can you should live at your parents' house at least for the 6 first months to a year when you start working full-time, that way you can put money on the side. It doesn't mean not helping the parents financially but rent and food are pretty much covered and that saves a lot of money.
Please Damon make more content about this “money game”. i’m an 18 year old and i’m obsessed with saving, which I guess is a good thing. But at the same time, I feel like I need to realize that life is meant to be lived and money is meant to be used.
Susan Ma damn idk but this kinda came off as you trying to invalidate this person’s struggle just bc they’re young, this is a stressful situation to them right now, and i think we should encourage them to try to stress less about it. Obviously it’s great thes save some, but they should enjoy their young years still. My advice is that ; every saving is a saving, even if u save up 0.5 cents monthly, thats still going to add up into something later. So to make it easier on yourself, instead of controlling how much you’re saving, you could try to think about how much you’re going to spend.
Guys i really appreciate all the input! I do realize saving is important and that i’ll look back and be grateful that i didnt spend all of my money as a teen. @@irenebernardi3954 Wow, same! I'm 20 and I'm also kinda obsessed with saving. I would love to think the same as Damon about money, I think his way of thinking is really interesting.
Only Americans who live in Southern California (like me) or New York think it's cheap in Paris. And anyway, I don't agree. I was there. I don't even think it is less than Los Angeles, I think it is probably comparable to Los Angeles. His rent is 995 euros, which is $1172 for his tiny studio with no full kitchen. In Los Angeles you'd at least have a full kitchen for that cost.
I live in Geneva (Switzerland), and my expenses aren't that much per week. I just checked and apparently the cost of living index in Geneva is 27,26 % higher than in New York. I guess I don't just spend that much money. I rarely go to restaurants, I have a coffee maker at home etc.
as someone who comes from a family that has many financial problems, thinking about money the way Damon does is kinda hard because I have grown up in an environment where money was tight so you automatically start feeling guilty when you spend money on stuff you don't "need" but "want". which is why I hate capitalism (there are other reasons too obviously).
Agreed! His mindset only works if you have the *financial security* of doing so, some of us would end up on the street if we didn't count and cared about every cent...
I’m the same. My whole life it was drilled into me that I should save any cent I can and only spend money on my needs. Even buying my needs now brings me so much guilt. Money makes me want to shoot myself. I hate money, so much.

French person here : Your cold water bill is included in the rent, and you pay for the gaz used to heat your hot water. Also, the fact that you divide everything in weeks is killing me. In France, and in most of Europe I think, we don't pay for anything by weeks, we pay by months. The wages/salaries/incomes are received monthly and all the bills are paid monthly (in like, 99.99% of the cases). So that's VERY complicated for me to really have an idea of the cost. I get that it would make more sense for Us citizen "at a glance" though.
US person here and we pay all our bills monthly! However, depending on where you work and if you’re a salaried or hourly worker, you may get paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly. I believe he just split it into two weeks to make adding together his expenses more easily.
I was also thinking that if you DO want to calculate the weekly costs you have to multiply your monthly cost by 12 and then divide it by 52 because not every month has exactly 4 weeks.
I'm a US citizen and I yelled: "Just figure out how much it is per month!" I think it's because, as he has admitted, he doesn't budget haha-so he doesn't know how!
Damon: When you're old you aren't gonna want to travel. My hip, progressive 75-year-old grandma: When I retired at 60, I traveled to roughly 75 countries
I did all my travelling on virtually no money, how did I do that?,between the ages of 30 and 60 then our UK Govt had changed the law so all the ladies of my generation who had worked hardfor a lifetime on the promise of retirement and a life of ease and travel had to work till the age of 66 which totally pissed off most of them and also put great distress on some. Then I rejoined the workforce and now have reached that new state pension age and there is covid so there's no travel. Which proves I was right.
I agree with the café thing, I don’t go to a café for coffee at least not JUST for coffee, I go because it’s probably really nicely decorated and I genuinly feel that I feel better and have deeper/more enjoyable conversations at café’s rather than at home. Change of place is good guys.
Ridiculously wealthy people are another segment who subscribe to the money isn't real philosophy. Famously the wealthy were known not to have cash on them because well money wasn't real. If you are 100k in debt, money is absolutely real. When you're stuck being an essential worker in a pandemic, because you don't have the savings to quit, money is absolutely real. When you are trying to decide whether to stay home with your children or take that job, money is absolutely real. You should be more explicit about your savings/earnings which allows you the freedom not to think too hard about finances. Most of your American viewers are living paycheck to paycheck, unable to come up with $1000 in an emergency. These people need to track those coffees and toilet paper and stop enjoying the money until a 6 months emergency fund has been saved up.
Yeah the glamorization of rich people, whether they’re portrayed as cute, generous, or desirable is one of the most twisted aspects of capitalism. If you play the capital game on a large scale, you re part of the problem, a system that promotes the well being of a minority and exploits the rest.

There’s only the tiny express stores so everything’s more expensive and since I can’t just drive to a store and have to carry my shit, I go grocery shopping every single day, it’s a freaking pain. Also just sayin, if you’re looking to move to Paris and this scares you, just saying spending so much isn’t a default it’s all about lifestyle! I personally spend around ~500 a month excluding rent.

I live in the center of Paris, and I'll give you a tip on how to spend less money on groceries: Try Carrefour Drive, you pay the suburban prices, it's like 20 to 30% cheaper than Franprix or Monop', it's a free service, you just go pick your groceries in a Carrefour Market near you, it reduced my bills so much it's crazy. :)
He does pay water, it's just included in his rent (bc the "charges" are included except electricity) it's how it worked usually for apartment in france at least

Money is the world, capitalism is the only solution out of poverty, you work hard you get rewarded for it, anyone can have the American dream in a capitalism society, than be pushed down in socialist economies.
@@globist9527 money doesn't in essence have a practical or use value like back in history we traded things we need ed but money is only nesscary because we built and constructed our capitalist society around surplus value or the accumulation of capital. Think what if we had built it around some other economic system then we would be thinking the same thing about that economic system. And as money in essence has no use value because realistically speaking it's paper with a number on it and we built a society around the accumulation of this paper because somehow investing capital and incentivising the lowering of worker wage to get more money actually adds anything to your well-being is a ridiculous and again is just a concept we made up so we could add value to things unessacarily. Essecually capitalism is based on a mythical concept communicated through language and agreement between humans if not for humans money wouldn't exist. So in my opinion basing a system were this is a central ideal or virtue is a bit ridiculous to me anyways, placing value on things you don't need to value and also then pulling those values out of your ass is insane to me.
@@globist9527 so in my opinion capitalism is flawled and should be done away with. Because again being rich and poor is relative, handing someone paper with a number on it doesnt nesscarily fix their lives or make them happier etc in my opinion your way of thinking is flawled. Because what is the only thing that stops good people donating or rich people from helping kids in Africa with food and water etc. Money does, some people can't because they don't have enough for themselves, or rich people are greedy. African people are considered poor because of lack of money. So if we took away this concept then people would do things for the things they wanted or needed without having to buy them or sacrifice something for it etc. And I already know what you are going to say " money creates incentive" but I would disagree. Let's take the science industry, it doesn't pay a huge amount of money at all with the huge amount of research and testing there do. I once heard I think it was a biologist say " you don't go into science for the money" I'm not sure were I heard that but it stuck with me. Doctors do it to help people. Through out human history we have been doing things for things other than money there are difference incentives. Money created unneeded problemes
@@judedunne5046 If you think capitalism should be done with you should see South America, Africa, and Asia. Capitalism is what drives innovation and competition, without innovation nothing will be accomplished. Redistrubating wealth would make you dependant on others hard work. Instead I would not wake up everyday determined to be the best, most educated person for the job that I want in the future, master degree in global communication in International Business(required at least 3 years studied abroad), fluent in Arabic, French, Spanish and English with deep knowledge of islam, Judaism and Christianity, with the goal of reuniting all of God's children together and prosper like he attended, together.. Everyone could be well off if they are willing to put the work in. Even without the concept of money, just trade, it would not be feasible in today period due to mass industrialization, because you can not just trade a man skills for a specific object anymore. Money stamps were created for a reason, a way to trade despite language barriers and have a easy way to compare and contrast objects value by having a scale. It revolutionzed trade, instead of having a house to get another house, you can have paper currency or digital to make it simple and more cost efficient. We are not trading goats and cattle anymore. Without a form of money you will not be able to purchase anything in today's society. About Africa, the reason why Africa is so poor is due to the Communist leaders who continue to steal and murder innocent for their own gain and rich people and people giving free handouts to them. Since a majority of shoes in africa are free, water and electricity from USA companies. It take away the shoe makers, and construction workers jobs because they can not compete with free 💲💲💲 services nobody can. We are destroying them by removing their job sector no more clothes, water, and other related jobs. If we as humans all wanted to be in the middle class we all would have to have an education, or specialized skill, welding.etc. If you sit on you butt all day any not willing to sacrifice anything, why should someone have to work harder for their own failure to accept responsibility. The reason why some are more well off is not because of race, religion, or creed. Trust me, because when people have a desire or a dream and you mantain that, anything is possible. In reference to what you were talking about at the end of the video, the sad thing is some people work very hard and are still in poverty. Unfortunately, capitalism doesn’t allow everyone who works hard to flourish, even though many people believe that to be true. I totally agree with your philosophy on money, though. I’ve found that even as I start to make more money, my happiness level is about the same and the amount of problems I have is more or less the same.
this made me think a lot about my own relationship to money. sometimes idc how much money i spend bc i feel like im investing in myself and i like the things i buy. sometimes im buying necessities and i want them to last a long time and so i dont mind paying more for "luxary". but the way i was conditioned to think about money i feel like is in such a negative way and i'll hear that little voice in my head saying "hmm idk is it worth it? it's kinda pricey" but like honestly is money even real?? america is in trillion dollar debt like how??? so yeah i mean i feel like it's important to be smart with your money (save it, make sure you pay off the important stuff) but also spend it in a way that makes you happy and is necessary for you

$724 to $800 /week ????? let's even to $750 x4 that's $3000 a month lol I was a language assistant in the UK last year and I made about £900 per month and my rent was £550, I spent about £200/month on groceries and my only leisure activity was going to the cinema once a month, I saved the rest to travel a tiny bit at the end of my stay but I never went to restaurants, bars, cafés, etc. It's definitely easy to say you don't care about money or that 'money isn't real' (I do agree with the latter though!) when it doesn't directly affect your life, I *wish* I could think like that but when your entire salary is used for "necessaries" you can't do much... I believe you should have started your video with how much money you make per month or week because this was kind of vague(?)

Me, a Colombian girl, noticing how Damon spends more than the monthly minimum wage for Colombians in just A WEEK, and he does it to survive. Like, even when he's responsible with his finances it is too much to process for me who wants to live in Paris 🤯
@Winyl I'm well aware of that, however, the minimum wage here doesn't make up for the cost of living. See, Colombians get paid 8 to 9 dollars for 8 hours of work in a day. That's far from fair.
In France minimum wage is approximately 1200 euros per month, which represents 5 000 000 pesos as of today. Plus being French and having lived in Colombia, prices are a lot cheaper if you compare it to the minimum wage. A restaurant in Colombia is usually around 30.000 pesos, but in France it’s around the equivalent of 70.000 pesos (at least when I was there before the Covid made the Colombian peso weaker)

Damon, an American: living in Paris is not that expensive
Me, a Pole: are you kidding me?

It is because NYC is expensive af
as a french person moving to Paris in a few weeks... let me tell you that's THE most expensive city of France
@@louisefournel2451 mdr tu vien de quel ville en France?
I'm starting a GoFundMe to get Damon a shelf for his toaster. Or maybe a toaster with a longer cord. Or an extension cable. One of the three options will occur. He just needs 30 euros
God's work🙏
Love the selection of ‘options’ 👍🏼
Throughout the life experience I've managed to gather in my short life on earth, I justify my coffee purchases for the same reason. 1. It makes me happy. If it makes you happy and you can afford it, I believe it is worth the purchase. 2. You are paying for the workspace, environment, and sometimes a little social interaction goes a long way. 3. I would rather be less well-off and social drinking good espresso than ~slightly more well-off~ alone drinking something cheap.
I think we forget that life is meant to be lived based off of the constant negative connotations associated with spending money ever. It is your life and its meant to be LIVED!!
with that said, invest in an extension chord because that microwave has me on edge lollllll
I’m so illiterate I thought this video was titled “how I spend a week in Paris” so I was expecting a vlog, and like 3 min in the video I’m like damn this is a lot of money talk for a vlog. I’ll walk myself out.
hahahahaha
"The purpose of money is not to get more money. The purpose of money is to use it to flourish and to have a better life." --> Thank you so much for the inspiration Damon!!! You are keeping me on the right track
financial tip: start saving money early on in life when you don’t have to pay bills and can move out securely
I've got too much of a spending habit to actually to save money 🥴
I wish I could do this but I’m a teenager and have no way of making money. At least at the moment smh
I agree.
I've been saving all my birthday and Christmas money ever since I was born
The thing is that if you can you should live at your parents' house at least for the 6 first months to a year when you start working full-time, that way you can put money on the side. It doesn't mean not helping the parents financially but rent and food are pretty much covered and that saves a lot of money.
Please Damon make more content about this “money game”. i’m an 18 year old and i’m obsessed with saving, which I guess is a good thing. But at the same time, I feel like I need to realize that life is meant to be lived and money is meant to be used.
I wish I'd saved money when I was 18! Your money is making money. You'll use that money sooner or later, don't worry about *that.*
Check out Jo's channel. She wanted to do that.
BUT i feel like i have a bit of a toxic mentality towards it and its the first time i hear a youtuber talk so openly about these topics. I think both sides of the conversation are extremely interesting!
@@irenebernardi3954 Wow, same! I'm 20 and I'm also kinda obsessed with saving. I would love to think the same as Damon about money, I think his way of thinking is really interesting.
americans "omg that's so cheap"
europeans who live (alone) outside the major cities: ...
right?? i literally never spend more than 40£ a week (but i’m also a student)
I live in Madrid and Damon spends more in a week than I do a month. The groceries were really shocking to me
I’m American in NYC and cost of living sounds so cheap in the video. Like damn, We might spend $150-$300 on groceries that could last 2 weeks maybe.

French person here :
Your cold water bill is included in the rent, and you pay for the gaz used to heat your hot water.
Damon: "How much do I spend in Paris in a week?'
Me: ....you spend more than I'm worth😅
he spends 3 to 4 time more than I do...
Damon: When you're old you aren't gonna want to travel.
My hip, progressive 75-year-old grandma: When I retired at 60, I traveled to roughly 75 countries
Love this👏
I did all my travelling on virtually no money, how did I do that?,between the ages of 30 and 60 then our UK Govt had changed the law so all the ladies of my generation who had worked hardfor a lifetime on the promise of retirement and a life of ease and travel had to work till the age of 66 which totally pissed off most of them and also put great distress on some.
Paris coffee shops must be packed with RUclipsrs working on their films.
True, true, $$ only not important when you have some, not when it’s an old lady at Walmart filling half her prescription. Sad state of affairs....tu sais ?
I’ve always lived in Paris, and what I spend the most on are those GRO-CE-RIES like? There’s only the tiny express stores so everything’s more expensive and since I can’t just drive to a store and have to carry my shit, I go grocery shopping every single day, it’s a freaking pain.
Also just sayin, if you’re looking to move to Paris and this scares you, just saying spending so much isn’t a default it’s all about lifestyle! I personally spend around ~500 a month excluding rent.
i mean for groceries you can make a big trip once a week a little further away, that what i was doing when i was living there
kanekiji i mean you can, but it gets heavy and I’m weak as fuck haha. I also always walk to the grocery store bc I hate having my groceries in the metro for some reasons? That’s how irrational haha

you dont pay water bills in paris bc the municipality pays for you!! water is publicly owned and free!!!
Hahaha, no. If you don't pay it it's because your landlord pays it for you, and you pay him back in what's called "charges".
He does pay water, it's just included in his rent (bc the "charges" are included except electricity) it's how it worked usually for apartment in france at least
Yeah the usual in Europe everywhere where lived so far the water is included in the utilities you only have to pay electricity and WiFi separate.
Wooot are you serious?
My edf charges say otherwise
omw part 2 is everything! this is the mindset about money I need to internalise, especially as a student. i need to live for my own enjoyment and in the present, rather than accumulating stuff/money based on what others think I should do.

Your philosophy on money is so refreshing. So much of youtube is about how to become a Millionaire. Honestly, I’m sooo tired wasting my youth working myself to the bone just so I can say I have 20 k in the bank.
Money is a game that impacts people's health, life expectancy, dignity and around wellbeing. Living in a capitalist society is sad man.
Money is the world, capitalism is the only solution out of poverty, you work hard you get rewarded for it, anyone can have the American dream in a capitalism society, than be pushed down in socialist economies.
@@globist9527 money isn’t real. We created that concept. It’s not the right or only way to live
If I was given handed everything I would not be as skilled, no need.
"A heart without dreams is a bird without feathers"

In reference to what you were talking about at the end of the video, the sad thing is some people work very hard and are still in poverty. Unfortunately, capitalism doesn’t allow everyone who works hard to flourish, even though many people believe that to be true. I totally agree with your philosophy on money, though. It's definitely easy to say you don't care about money or that 'money isn't real' (I do agree with the latter though!) when it doesn't directly affect your life, I *wish* I could think like that but when your entire salary is used for "necessaries" you can't do much...
