my mom use to play this song and as she strum we would sing it as kids. then i sang it to my kids when i would rock them to sleep now they sing it to their kids. This song has a special bond in my family. This saturday January 26th 2013 we, my sisters and all the grandchildren. wil sing this song to my mom at her 70th birthday party!
I like this song very much. Very moving. I wasn't aware of this version. Thank you for posting this song. Wish more people heard this and realize how fortunate we are to be able to see.
This reminds me of my Aunt, it was her party piece when she was a child, and she won a couple of talent contests with it. She passed away aged only 36 from cancer but every time I hear this memories flood back, RIP Bernadette🙁
I grew up on an Island, where the white man named it "The Savage Island" (Captain Cook) Google it.. I listen to this song when I was growing up on that Island, I have always thought that It was written for me. Even today @ 40+ it still structs strong emotions in me. Humble is one, sad is another one, to whoever wrote these words, I really believe that it touch many souls.
I LISTEN TO THIS SONG THAT MY FATHER USED TO PLAY AND NOW HE IS AWAY NIOW I RELISE THE PAIN THATHE WAS PROBALY TRYING TO TELL US THAT HE WHENT TTHROUGH BEIING ORPHANED WHEN HE WAS A CHILDWORDS IN A SONG DOES MEAN A LOT WHEN YOU HAVE NOT GOT THEM NOW LOVE U DAD JOHN
My father spent from age 3 to age 11 in an orphanage in Danville VA. My mother, after Dad died, told me, that when they were newlywed, he wanted to show her where he spent his childhood. He drove the car up the long driveway to the orphanage on the hill, then stopped 1/2 way up. After a long pause, my mother, seeing him staring blankly at the home, asked what was wrong. He said, "I can't go up there!". He turned the car around, and never went back. It affected him horribly all his life. He was a great man, and built a playground with rides and swings for HIS kids, perhaps to escape the horror of his own childhood! He died May 9th, 1989... and I miss him everyday.
+Les Hutchens That's a very moving story, Les, it sounds like your dad gave you a great life despite his troubled childhood, it's all we can ask for eh? As Socrates once said, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle"
My mother died when I was six and I remember this song being very special to me as I was so alone. The family that took me abused me. It was a very confusing time for me to lose the security and trust of a loving family unit basically overnight
I used to sing this to my son about twenty years ago when he was five and he would sob his little heart out, I wonder if it will still works he gets quite emotional when he has a few beers, just have to do it.
Am I realy the only one that hates this song with a vengance? My Dad used to sing this when he came home drunk and was feeling sorry for himself. Pass the razor blades ;-)
I here you Keith, my life with Dad was not all it could have been, he to preferred the bottle over family, I'm still trying to find the demons that drove him to make the choices he did.
This is a sad song, but, strangely ,it can be,sung with consideration to orphaned blind.animals(puppies kittens) ; just change a few words(I,m nobodies pet...when I turn to look with eyes that cannot see...).Also some of the lyrics could relate to "special needs pets" awaiting adoption.
my dad loved foster and allen and i can see why...what a beautiful song and sung by such soft voices
Love this song so much .I was nobody's child until my nan kept me safe and loved me..love you nan xxxx
My precious Father was an entertainer and sang this.

We are the Word, We are the Children, We are the hope for a brighter day.
That all the burdens of the World would just fade away.
