Just wanted to say thanks. I watched your video and a few like yours and finally did my relocation and everything went great. I was reluctant to do because of some negative opinions about the relocation. But after 180k miles it made more sense just to relocate it. Thanks to all the first gen xterra you tubers!
Just did this to my Nephew 2003 Nissan Frontier and it worked and was super easy fix. Truck now accelerates, idles and runs better. Thanks for saving us a TON of money and work with a simple relocation!!
Doing this for an older friend who have a fixed income this weekend, it was puttering on them a while back and scanned it with the OBDII reader and it came back to be the knock sensor and this weekend it finally gave up on them. Thank you for this.
Cody, you are the Buddah of repair hacks. This saves me so much time and money. I can't turn wrenches like I used to. This saves my cramped fingers and wrists a week of recovery. Thank you so much. So very much! Thank you, thank you.
Thanks so much for this video! I bought a 2003 Xterra at a great price recently, and it showed a bad knock sensor. I used the procedure you demonstrate here and it fixed the issue, enabling the truck to pass right through emissions testing. May not be the ideal place to mount the sensor, but at least it is still functional to some degree and it satisfies emissions requirements without having to tear down the entire top of the engine. I took mine a step further, cutting the original sensor wire further to the rear and soldering all wires into a new 2 conductor harness connector in case I ever get to replace the sensor in the stock position.
Yeah there are several ways to mount it but relocating it is so much better than tearing down the intake which i have done before. Glad the video helped and thanks for watching !
Did the mod as described on my 2004 Xterra. Got my parts from Amazon. It's all happy now. Yes, this is probably not the optimum theoretical location for the knock sensor, but we're talking about an engine who's designers should be flogged. Nice Job on the video!
So I did this on my 03 xterra super charged.I used a wire harness from a xterra I got at a junkyard. And got a sensor from rock auto.I didn't think it was going to work because I had to bolt the sensor to the supercharger. But it did and I passed emissions Thanks Cody!
Do you have a link to where you bought the part from? I tried buying a knock sensor and the pigtail connector and they didn't fit each other. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
I did this to my 2000 Xterra after watching this video. The mechanic quoted me $675.49 for the work including parts. The knock sensor only cost about $10 at Autozone and the rest was basically labor. I only ended up spending $20 at Amazon for the sensor, loom, and wire cutters. Thanks for this great advice!!!!
They sell kits on ebay. New knock sensor and plug in for about $15. I would use butt connector crimps and heat shrink. You are asking for trouble with wire nuts. Also if you have the wire the side of the block or head is a much better location. It picks up valve rattle vibrations.
My 2003 xterra was misfiring Bad ,got spark and fuel ,new plugs, wires, rotor and cap...no change , had knock sensor code for 11 months.....ignored it....did relocation as you showed..RUNS LIKE NEW ! THANK YOU !!
THANKS CAR GUY. JUST RELOCATED KNOCK SENSOR ON A 2003 FRONTIER 3.3 NATURALLY ASPERATED. USED 1997 MAXIMA SENSOR AND HARNESS. WIRED INTO HARNESS RIGHT WHERE YOU SAID AND WORKS GREAT. NO MORE CODE P0327. LANCASTER CA T ND M AUTOMOTIVE

check out this forum, they have a parts list of everything you will need and where to find it. www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f46/knock-sensor-relocation-how-41704/
Thanks for the video. Relocated mine 2 weeks ago. Afterwards I cleared my CEL. Yes I know the knock sensor code doesn't throw the light. But ever since replacing the KS, my CEL has not come back on for my catalytic converter. the po420 code. Could be just a coincidence but nevertheless, I'm a happy guy.
I'm just wondering how much a faulty knock sensor throws off other things in operation? Mine isn't showing much for codes except the knock sensor, but it lapses in and out of closed loop.
Wanted to say thank you for your video. Being on disability don't have a lot of money for auto repair. Bought the parts and fixed it myself. Again thank you.
haha this is great as I just had knee surgery and am too on disability. Just finished mine and works great. Now with all this time on my hands, I'm just going down the list of shit that needs fixing on my truck.
Nice video. I thought about the original part location and read some of the comments about the harmonics being further away and I came to this conclusion. That location is only good for piston misfire. The vehicle is ohc so camshaft noise is a no. It's closer to the rear of the engine so the front cylinders would be difficult to pick up misfires. Crap engineering at its finest. They could have placed at least 2 sensors above the plenum. With metal that contacts with the same place as the original part. I did do this because I took the upper plenum off for valve cover gaskets and at the time the sensor was 100 bucks. No way... I would say if you want factory location, go full bore. Valve cover gaskets, knock sensor, fuel injectors and if you can replace the exhaust manifolds, I guarantee one or both have cracks. If you are doing 500 dollar labor, get the most bang for your buck.
Cody, you're mechanical skills saved me a hell of a lot of money. Just relocated the sensor to the upper intake manifold as described in your video, plugged in the reader, cleared the codes, started engine with reader plugged in, now it reads "NO CODES" 2004 Xterra 4WD SE V6, 3.3L. How long to drive it around before smog check? (due this month). Thanks Bud!!!!WLevy

I did mine not 24hrs ago. Light was off for about 50 miles. Now im getting a code for cam shaft position sensor? Or was it crank? Either way...another code that wasnt there before. Any idea? I used a harness and sensor for 95-99 maxima.
Hi Cody I re-listened to the video. So you can use a knock sensor that is technically for the maxima like the one you used in this video. I ordered the sensor for the xterra and it didn't fit the harness so I returned and bought the sensor that fits the maxima harness.
I have 04 xterra with p0238 the engine run fine on idle but it feel want to give up on higher rev , my major problem is the car won't engage when I shift the lever I feel it want to engage on D little bit but It won't , my question is what was the symptoms for your car is my transmission not engage is related to the code p0238 knock sensor . hey cody, I have a 2001 xterra 3.3, I bought the sensor and pigtail to wire into the factory harness, the pigtail that I got was the one they say to buy for this but the two wires coming out of the pigtail was brown and white, which one goes to the grounding and the white wire from the factory harness
Wire nuts and tape is just asking for trouble later down the road. There's a lot of heat under that hood. Even crimping is not ideal since it relies on a pressure-fit connection. Solder it, use heat-shrink, and don't ever worry about it again.
Thanks for this. Getting to the old sensor is a bear. We bought a replacement sensor for the Xterra 2001 SE, it comes with a pigtail with 2 wires. Another video said we connect the leftmost connector to the white wire and ignore the 2nd wire on the pigtail. Do you know if that is correct? Does the sensor get a ground from the valve cover? Should we connect the ground sheath to the rightmost connector on the new sensor? Thanks.
That engine's other complicated thing is it has a lot of hoses... vacuum, air, and coolant. Specially coolant small hoses that are hidden and difficult to get to
Hey Cody - Thanks for putting the time in making this video, and the example of how extensive the work actually is if any viewers want to change the KS in the original spot. ONLY CALL OUT that I've tried to forget but leads me to post my first actual comment on youtube.... Your wiring techniques are BRUTAL. You should be proud of your work, and make it last and if found by the next car owner, not leaving them with "WTF" questioning the instal work. Thats it. Thanks again for the post.
On my 06 Nissan Murano a rat chewed the knock sensor wires clean in half ,I’ve gotten rid of the rat and there seems to be no difference in how the car runs no engine light ,no default mode or anything it runs fine. It’s a low mileage great running car. In your opinion am I doing any damage by leaving it disconnected? Thanks. Brian.
yes! thank you for this vid it worked and saved me serious $$, great video, stable, crystal clear, well lit, good pace, concise instructions, 5-star, triple A, etc!!
@@CodytheCarGuy so you don't have to pull or even unplug the old 1. You just bypass it? If so sweet deal!! What year and car to get the harness off of. My wife nissan just died 2day of a knock sensor
Dumb question: Is that new Knock sensor the one that comes for that 2002 Nissan Xterra or from the 95-99 Nissan maxima? Do they use the same Part Number for the knock sensor?
Hi! Great video. My Knock Sensor is shot so I would like to do this to my vehicle. I just wanted to double check that this will work on a 2000 Xterra. And, are you actually leaving the original Knock Sensor where it is in the engine when you do this? And I looked under the hood, and cant quite figure out which wire you spliced into. Thanks!!
so is it safe to assume its okay to just cut the wire and leave the old sensor in its original location and just relocate the new one and splice the wires?
Hi car guy thanks for the videos you make have question about the knock sensor relocation of 04 xterra ???The relocation of knock sensor have the same function for the engine or work different???? Thanks car guy appreciate you help and time
I think I need help figuring out which wires I need. I cut into the thicker one. It was a coax wire. But there was the shielding, and a black and white wire. Did I cut into the wrong one? It might have been white and red. I’m not at home right now. But it’s been driving me crazy.
Hey Cody...there a reason you went with a Maxima sensor and harness? Also would the factory installed harness need to be left disconnected before and after the splice and relocate?...Thanks!
I bought a knock sensor and harness of ray 99 Pathfinder from AM Autoparts. Under $20.00 Anyway, I followed your instructions exactly and everything went well. I am hoping I will be able to get a reading off my Fixd Sensor that I bought. Is there a reset period before the sensor will work again?
Great video, thanks. May have missed it but why not use a harness and knock sensor for the year and model of the vehicle you are working on instead of a different year Maxima?
I really want to know so a quick response if possible Cody my good sir. You said you used a maxima sensor.... Is it a sensor for a 2.4L and used for a 3.3L Xterra? It looks identical. The reason I ask is because I ordered the harness from eBay but it doesn't match the part number for the actual Xterra knock sensor, naturally. So can you use that 2.4L knock sensor for the V6 3.3L Xterra?
Actually the harness I bought together with a sensor for an Xterra XE V6 2.4 on eBay did not fit the new sensor for my Xterra SE V6 3.3L. However, the sensor for the 2.4L fit the 3.3L. I installed it as described by Cody, it read no codes and it passed smog check
Welp already replaced one in a customers car by the books wasn’t that terrible honestly just two coolant hoses in the back of the manifold that were a pain everything else is straight forward
Thanks for the great tip. After replacement the truck got quitter but the error code still in the reader even though reset the code from the diagnostic reader. Do you have any suggestion?
Do you think I could leave the stock sensor in its original location and wire a new one up to the mounting bracket? I don’t have the tools to disassemble half my car lol
I've been told that you do NOT have to connect the shielding wire at all. Just the main wire as the shield does it's job at the other end of the connection No need, just leave it alone
Hi Car Guy, what about the XTerra 2003 Supercharged, where should I relocate the Knock Sensor? your idea it's the most creative and easy to do. But I have an SC.. so, what would you recommend?
+Power Innate I have an 02 supercharged X and I'm planning on doing this soon. The only issue I can think I might run into is the bypass thottle valve slapping closed to hard and tripping the sensor so my plan is to relocate it further from that. I'll try to remember to get back to you on how it works when I actually do it.
+Dan Dan Man... I just got a mechanic to fix it. same spot, brand new from Autozone.. 100 KS.. and 200 to install it.. and that's it, vamonos! :D - but if u post a video how u did it, many will be blessed by it :D
The relocation should only be performed on normally aspirated engines, and never on the super-charged model. With positive boost pressure, detonation/knock can be detrimental to an engine. I would bite the bullet, and replace it in the OEM position. Dave ASE Certified Master Mechanic
I have a 2000 x and can not find the wire, also I see it is routed to the front under the manifold, I see a large wire it is grey with blue streak and I followed the wire going into the fat grey one, there was three wires, blue, black with white stripe and white. HELP PLEASE
Just did mine. Instantly the service engine soon light went out. All the codes gone. Several miles later and still no light. Is it my imagine, or does it run slightly better after? Seems like a bit more power in the top end.
Nomuff2tuff I’m interested in your comment. Are you suggesting doing the knock sensor replacement process shown in this video but NOT replacing the sensor and instead just capping the wire with the resistor? My 2000 xterra is dead in the garage due to the knock sensor. It’s time for me to fix it.
I had to take the lower plenum off to get to the water outlet underneath it, due to a coolant leak. my question is, if I already have the knock sensor exposed, cant I just relocate it?
Did this relocation on a 1999 3.3 Frontier. Changed the in-line fuel filter and changed the in gas tank filter and fuel pump. Distributor, cam shaft sensor and crank shaft sensor were also changed. Truck start beautifully and idles like it was new. However after 1 minute the truck dies. I do still get a knock sensor P0325 fault code. Can the knock sensor prevent the vehicle from running? Starting.
So ihave a 98 Infiniti qx4 and when idid all of this, the truck won’t start. All the interior lights came on and everything but when iturn to start mode, it doesn’t do anything and all the lights still be on on the dash. Did I do something wrong or is it something else?
Cody. The knock sensor for a 99 maxima has a different connection than the knock sensor for 2000 xterra 3.3 engine. Did you use a maxima harness and a maxima knock sensor? The knock sensor for the xterra 2.4 engine knock sensor looks like the maxima knock sensor. Can I just use both the maxima harness and maxima knock sensor for my 3.3 xterra? My concern is that if I try to do the relocation with a maxima harness and a xterra 3.3 knock sensor, the harness will not fit on the knock sensor. Of course the maxima harness and maxima knock sensor is cheaper!
exactly, they don't have the same ends, my 3.3. v6 xterra knock sensor is different than the maxima. did you find the correct fitting pig tail wire harness that matches the 3.3. v6 sensor on any other nissans? by chance.
Just buy a knock sensor that comes with the wire. Plug will match the sensor. $16 on Amazon - April 2018. The one I got says it fits a bunch of vehicles, including the Maxima and the Xterra, but it doesn't matter what it fits if you get the two items in one package. Don't know if there is a difference in voltage between the years, but mine fit my vehicle anyway, a 2000 Xterra and a few other years, as well as a few years of the Maxima that Cody talked about.
HI Cody, Thank for the video. I have one question ,I didn't get a old wire harness from a used Nissan, all I did was cut one electrical wire and did you procedure but I didn't connect the ground part. I connected one wire to the knock sensor using a 14-16 gauge quick connect female and its working great !! My 2004 Xterra has no pending codes for knocks sensor .So Is it necessary to connect the ground to the the sensor ? It working fine with only one wire connect to sensor not ground ...
Cody the Car Guy Ok I will order the wire harness Thanks . But I noticed in your video the harness that connector to the Sensor it only has the white wire which is just one wire That how I have my connected and it works great . .
Jose Flores Looking at a new knock sensor the inner core of it where the bolt passes through is all metal so I wouldn't be surprised if it just grounds itself to the engine block.
Hi cody, when I cut into the black wire cover and splice the new harness in, I use the wires coming from the front of the engine into the new wire harness right? Also, my new wire harness has a brown and white wire. Any suggestions on that?
Holy crap, thank you for this video. I'm usually all for doing things like there supposed to be. But after seeing where that little bastard is. I will be cheating 😃

so is it safe to assume its okay to just cut the wire and leave the old sensor in its original location and just relocate the new one and splice the wires?
Great tip, did this on my 01 easy peasy
Will the check engine light turn off when you replace the knock sensor or do you have to hook up it to a diagnostic box? thanks
Why do we need to use the maximas knock sensor and pigtails. Why not the vehicles original knock sensor and pigtail?
Thanks for the info man, great video and this is gonna save me a ton of time and $$$
would it be the same for my 2001 nissan xterra xe 3.3l v6 automatic 4wd non supercharged
Same situation with my X-Terra! How did you pass the emissions test?
Cody the wire black and white is that the one that goes to the crankshaft position sensor??
Do I need to take old one off or can I just splice new one to top and cap off old Wires
Thank's Cody very clean job. Old School
Great video!!! Will this work if i have the harness from a maxima but a knock sensor for my xterra from rockauto?
Do you think I could leave the stock sensor in its original location and wire a new one up to the mounting bracket? I don’t have the tools to disassemble half my car lol
Thanks for a good video. Does it pass California inspection smog check?
Cody you are the real MVP haha Thanks pal!
I've been told that you do NOT have to connect the shielding wire at all. Just the main wire as the shield does it's job at the other end of the connection
No need, just leave it alone
Question. Will this fix my problem with the gas mileage and the lost power or is just fix the engine code light?
hey cody, nice video. is that xterra the 2.4L or the 3.3L? will that maxima part work for the 3.3L
scagrag nevermind, I just watched again and realized the first thing you said was 3.3L, thanks anyway.
:D - but if u post a video how u did it, many will be blessed by it :D
i've got an 03 supercharged, and was wondering also. was going to do it myself.
Power Innate
The relocation should only be performed on normally aspirated engines, and never on the super-charged model. With positive boost pressure, detonation/knock can be detrimental to an engine. I would bite the bullet, and replace it in the OEM position.

Working on a 2000 xterra. The only thing I don't see is where the ground wire is in your video. Is it the two wires coming out of that loom?
Mikaela DeMartini if you order a 5.5 megaohm resistor you do away with the whole knock sensor all together it’s useless on naturally aspirated engines
I had to take the lower plenum off to get to the water outlet underneath it, due to a coolant leak. my question is, if I already have the knock sensor exposed, cant I just relocate it?
this same process can be used on a 2000 nissan frontier XE with the 2.4 L engine.
Which way do I go with the splice?
Did this relocation on a 1999 3.3 Frontier. Changed the in-line fuel filter and changed the in gas tank filter and fuel pump. Distributor, cam shaft sensor and crank shaft sensor were also changed. Truck start beautifully and idles like it was new. However after 1 minute the truck dies. I do still get a knock sensor P0325 fault code. Can the knock sensor prevent the vehicle from running? Starting.
No
What year does the harness has to be from a Maxima?
I just replaced some o2 sensors. Will the wiring harness/plugs from o2 sensors work for the knock sensor relocation?
Hey Cody, I have the code P0328, would I do the same exact thing or would I have to splice somewhere else?
So ihave a 98 Infiniti qx4 and when idid all of this, the truck won’t start. All the interior lights came on and everything but when iturn to start mode, it doesn’t do anything and all the lights still be on on the dash. Did I do something wrong or is it something else?
So would this be a permanent fix for a knock sensor? How would it detect the knock if its not in the factory location?
I did the ground so it goes back to the computer and ebay and amazon sells the wire harness kit brand new pretty cheap too
Cody the Car Guy Ok I will order the wire harness Thanks . But I noticed in your video the harness that connector to the Sensor it only has the white wire which is just one wire That how I have my connected and it works great . .
Jose Flores Looking at a new knock sensor the inner core of it where the bolt passes through is all metal so I wouldn't be surprised if it just grounds itself to the engine block.
do you have to use the maxima sensor, or could you do the same thing with a xterra sensor
LOOKING ON EBAY, ALL THE HARNESS ARE FOR 4 CYLINDERS. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF THE $20 KNOCK SENSOR AND THE $100
In the video, what colour is the wire that attachs to the knock sensor ? Thanks.
very informative and clear. awesome video. thank you!
so I watched the video but where to splice into the harness was not shown very clear I need to do this on a 03 Nissan exterra
I have a 2004 frontier with the super.. is this the same area on wiring harness?
Eric the car guys brother 👍 installed easy. Mine came with pigtail on ebay.
Will this work on a 2002 Nissan frontier supercharged 3.3L
hey man thanks for the idea, but i have a question can i relocate my knock sensor bank 1 sensor 1 from my 2005 kia optima v6 ?
will this work on a supercharged 3.3 litre? frontier?
NEVER use wire nuts and electrical tape to hold a critical component. Always use proper sealed connectors with heat shrink to make it water tight!
Is it ok to abandon the old knock sensor when relocating it to the top of the manifold?
great. thanks Cody. Gonna get it done soon
Hi cody, when I cut into the black wire cover and splice the new harness in, I use the wires coming from the front of the engine into the new wire harness right? Also, my new wire harness has a brown and white wire. Any suggestions on that?
Yes use the ones coming from the front of the motor. White is usually a ground but id ohm it if it was me.
Holy crap, thank you for this video. I'm usually all for doing things like there supposed to be. But after seeing where that little bastard is. I will be cheating 😃
My is Xterra 4×4 .do you think is in the same place the nock sensor.
Having trouble finding harness for the new knock sensor. 3.3 01l Xterra. Where can I find them?
Id like to know also. Have the sensor.. Need the plug
Victor just found it on amazon
@@danieladachi6463 I've looked on Amazon. They say there is no such thing as a Sensor Relocation Kit. So am I supposed to buy a 95 Sensor harness?
@@victorpagan4871 i punched in knock sensor harness and came up. 10 bucks
@@danieladachi6463 thank U
Thanks for the great video. Question can i use a 2004 xterra knock sensor instead of the 95 maxima one?
Hey bud yes you can it would be same proccess but wires might change in some way but it will work
Will this have any affect on passing Colorado emissions?
Would this solve a knock sensor not resetting for smog check?
