  • Late yesterday Vincent Chansard is a well known animator that's garnered a lot of attention thanks to his passionate animation work in the last few years. He's made noteworthy moments come to life with his work. One that many will recognize will be the Sukuna Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 that Studio MAPPA aired last year.

    Vincent Chansard is a very talented animator for sure. No doubt in mind he is. However I would have to side with Toei on this one. People forget that he is just a Key animator/Storyboard Artist, when there are other people who have to do clean up animation, in-between, and coloring for Vincent sequence. Even though Vincent sequences are quite impressive, those scenes take a strain onto other departments with in the studio that already have there own work loads as mention before. There is reason why TV anime don't have many movie like scenes in the show. It take a lot out of the other departments AND most likely pretty expensive.

    The reporting definetely makes it sound like a big deal or just incredibly malicious from Toei, which probably isn't the case. The fan reaction also supports that view of the situation.
    Unfortunately, the discourse around animation is pretty much always full of incredibly clueless people who think they know a lot about the topic. I mean we still get people talking about "not enough budget" or "x studio makes bad anime" etc.
    It's definitely true that artists can feel a lot of frustration when working on a series due to the end product looking different from the work they put in, especially amazing artists like Vincent, but it's ultimately a limitation of the medium where a large team has to be involved.
    Vincent does the storyboard and then it gets corrected for keys or specific needs/workloads of the team, then they add in-betweens, color and clean up the cut, bring it all together and it looks completely different from what he put in to the scene, I can definitely understand the frustration.
    I read an interview from Kiyotaka Oshiyama recently about his work on Look Back and unique production techniques/approaches. The interesting part is how he did a lot of the cuts for the movie personally and Studio Durian was essentially founded for the sole purpose of giving Oshiyama creative freedom over the production. This is a bit of a dream like scenario for most animators, but I think the sentiment and the frustration is pretty common for people in the industry.
    Ultimately, Vincent isn't going anywhere and his relationship with Toei is still probably amicable, they have a future deal too. It's not the first time he shared such things, as I remember when he was talking about a similar incident on a HeroAca production. The take away is that Vincent should probably avoid sharing such sentiments recklessly, because his large following likes to misundersand them.

      When people say "not enough budget", when isn't that not true? Isn't the idea that you put animators on a tighter production schedule because you can't afford to pay them to work longer hours if you extended that production time?

    • @cwega2463
      @cwega2463 21 день назад

      @@CrossfireDude123 nope. lmao

    • @zestr870
      @zestr870 21 день назад

      @@CrossfireDude123 It usually isn't true. From what I know, that isn't really the reason they don't get enough production time. Animators are already severely underpaid and many get paid per frame/cut, so wages don't play much of a role.
      However, you are right about them potentially losing money over production time. As far as I understand, the schedule for things like TV time slots, promotional campaigns etc. gets decided before or around the time the production starts, so it can't be negotiated easily. There is also the fact that episodes need to come out weekly, which forces the production to keep up, which gets harder the longer the show goes on.
      Regardless, people also usually don't use the "no budget" thing in this context anyway. They just see a few bad frames or 3D animation and point at that, when the problem is almost always time, not money, with 3D animation and models being generally pricier.

    Toei are only changing his "action storyboard" which is pretty common to be changed during the production, i don't think toei is erasing his animation work, cause his animation cleary hasn't been touch from i have seen, one example of his animation work being "erased" is the infamous My hero academia villians arc situation, the title is a bit misleading. Only his storyboards are being change. which sucks but i wish him best of luck.

      I mean animation and storyboard goes almost hand to hand, just look at the Mha video where they had cut down on his storyboard for one of his Genga. Atleast there he was humble and understood they couldn't include everything in to it, now if Toei removes like 90% of his stuff then what is the point, ofcourse its understandable since one piece is a weekly show and they probably don't have time before the pre-production until it reach the current episode.

Make an entire new season of MHA? They don't have all the time to composite and fully animate Vincent's layout and had to simplify it. Don't be mad at the studios, be mad at the production committee. but here we go again people who don't really know much about how these things work just gonna automatically antagonize the studio, I really think a well known and liked animator by many shouldn't just talk about these things so openly online, it can give some people the wrong ideas
      especially for those who're not aware of how the production process happens, there's thousands of people working on one piece with different departments, there are directors who are responsible to oversee all and every single aspect of the anime/show not just the creation of animation, there's so many factors for directors to consider and think about and make decisions based on all that to maintain the overall quality of the show for ex. voicing characters, they can't do those before scenes in the animation is somewhat done and usable. Another factor are storyboards, they have to keep the storyboard level of difficulty from increasing too much otherwise it will take too much time and increase the workload of other departments, and so some aspects of the workers creation and artistic vision may not be fully used or fully realized. Animes have contracts with TV and other distributors they have schedule, it has nothing to do with hating workers or disrespecting them, where would they get their money and how would they even pay animators if their show isn't sold and broadcasted.

    I'm sorry but this kind of problems exists all the time, he should've have known since when he started working with anime studio that in most cases the work that he's done will sometimes won't get accepted. If he left Mappa for the same reason then the problem is pretty clear.
    The only fault he did is by not accepting some of the offer he received a way back ago, which has more power in terms of what animation scenes there's going to be, but instead he decided to become a regular animator. Now I'm not saying that he's naive at trusting every single Anime Studio but he should've known the possibility of his work not getting the final push.
    If Vincent is now working on other shows, especially if they are anime projects aswell, then the same question will also come to this. Will his work even come up on these shows aswell or not?
