Just wanted to say thanks, had been struggling with short putts for well over a year and the tip about the thumb and the index finger in the right hand doing most of the work made a big difference! thanks again
My pleasure. I am glad it was helpful. I will be doing some one handed putting working on this this afternoon coincidentally. It gives me a great thrill to hear my videos have been able to help people all over the world. Brian
fitzygolfpro i has been trying to either have the left hand be dominant or both of them at the same time and the putts were going all over the place! Now i feel i have more control
Brain! I enjoyed watching all seven putting tips that you showed on this video. This basically goes along with the putting video I viewed yesterday. The tip I will try immediately is the thumb and pointer finger on the right hand. This may be the secret to solving my putting challenges. Good Job As Usual Brian!
@@fitzygolfpro Brian, I watched this video again and got two more thought provoking suggestions out of it that you offered. One was to try one handed putts, which I do once in a while, but not consistently. And, to look at the back of the hole, which appears to be bigger than the front. I also thought about running down the shaft a little to shorten the club for a shorter stroke. Hopefully, this will have me breaking the 30 putt barrier.
One hand putting is one of the best things every golfer can do. It’s great for short putting practice and for distance control on putts over 15 feet. There was a reason tiger does it every day. It’s also featured on the video I released just over an hour ago.
Glad you enjoyed it @Paul Chesterman With any luck you will be back out on the course on Friday and putting it all into practice. See you Saturday. Brian

Great tips for me to practice. I like the one of 'looking to the back of the hole..' In the past, I would just 'think' of the front of the hole and the ball would wind up short when putting. Thanks for the great tips!
I tried all seven tips yesterday. The two most difficult were (a) putting with eyes closed - I missed more than I made from 4 feet, and (b) not looking up at the hole until after the ball either went in or missed. The surprise from that is I was more relaxed when not looking up. I'm sure that will help my putting anxiety. These results were after one session of practice - I will keep at it. Thanks for the great tips.
Wow Bill. Good on you for giving them a go. Putting with your eyes closed is really great for the practice green not really in a round. But I do know people who do. Try and pick 1 of the tips and work on that tip for the next week. Repeat. I am glad you are enjoying the tips. Brian
I notice when your putting you seem to have more weight on your front leg with a little forward lean, is this something you try an do? Do you have a video talking about this? Thanks
No it is not something I try to do or advocate that you do. I think it it is more of a result of my ball position being more forward that makes it look that way. Brian
Hey Brian great video, how would measure what thickness to have your putter grip? As in number of papers under the grip? As I don’t like the newer fatter grips, Graham
There are so many grip thicknesses available these days you can get any size grip you want. Back in the early 80's when I was experimenting with grips I had to wrap a tennis grip or two to make them thicker or just use a lot of packing tape. My preference is to get the right size to start with and only use 1 layer of tape. I hope that helps. Brian
@@fitzygolfpro ok thanks Brian for the reply. We’ll have to catch up at Eastwood one day and perhaps you could check out my “Scotty” for me? Thanks again, Graham
like the lesson,am not a good putter and on shorter putts my left hand grip loosens and the right hand/arm takes over thus ball goes left. The other fault is pushing the ball right when playing a right to left putt.Tension I think may be the problem regards robert fitzgerald/elderly lynxer.
Thanks for your feed back. Have you ever thought about using the "claw grip" for putting. From what you are describing you could find it beneficial. Brian
You are right and the funny thing was after I filmed it and was packing up he came over and asked what I was doing? He booked in for a putting lesson the following week. I hope you enjoyed the video. Brian
A good tip that really helped me start holing more putts, medium and short, is to putt through to the front of the ball frm the back. This helps you subconsciously keep the putter face square and online for those critical few inches. So, I line up my ball with the line drawn on it, address it, then look at the front of the ball and make my stroke until I see the putter head pass through where the front of the ball was. Try it!
@@fitzygolfpro It works so well for me that when I get nervous on a putt I just think about doing that and end up holing a putt I know I'd typically pull or push. I think it does like you said...your brain will figure out how to keep the face square and online through the ball :)
They certainly have their place. They are good for some people and not so good for others. Anyone with a putting stroke with a hand GG face rotation will struggle a little. I think they are well worth trying.
Thanks Ian. I love helping people play better golf and really enjoy making these videos and interacting with people. I have added your idea to my list of video ideas for the future. Thanks for your feed back. Brian
I think that would be worth considering. Do some trials with a standard grip and left hand low and see what works best for you. Try hitting 3 foot puts from the around the hole say the NSEW game. Then put a circle of tees around the hole using 8 tees. Then put tees in the ground at 5 foot intervals from 15 feet to 45 feet. How many balls can you get in the circle using 1 ball from each tee. Do it over several sessions and you should be closer to a decision by the end of it. Brian
Good point Bill. I made this in April 2018. Things have certainly changed since then. Unfortunately I can’t edit a video that is already on RUclips. However I can add it to my list of videos to make. I won’t remake the video but I will make a video on putting with the new rules regarding the flagstick. I am currently on leave in France and won’t be back at work for a few weeks. But I will get to it. Brian
Here is how to learn how to make short putts. Take two dowel rods and make a 7 foot string to putt under. The only purpose of this is to find a consistent level spot to make straight putts from. Now start experimenting on what works from day to day and what doesn't. Too often timing alone will put everything in the hole but won't do it the next day. You will eventually find that the only thing that works consistently and right from the get-go the next day is the principles expounded by Ben Crenshaw. Even Tiger uses them. You have to give up control of the putter in order to get control of the putter. You must remove yourself from the putt and let it swing on it's own inertia or momentum. It thus has exactly zero propensity to twist. And as Ben says, the putter has to be ready to fall out of your hands in order to reach this free wheeling state. "Release" means let it swing. Arnie eluded to the same thing. Arnie insisted there has to be zero tension in the fingers, hands, and arms. That is the only way you can put the putter into it's own momentum so that it won't twist on the tilted plane it is riding on. It works !
Thanks for the update Gregg, I am glad it has worked for you. There is some really good stuff in this video. Let me know what you think of my other videos. I try to keep it simple and honest just like I coach. Thanks for watching. Brian
Good pick up Gregg. It is not a conscious move. It is just a mannerism. I tried to get out of it years ago but couldn’t. It is totally natural and I think I have been doing it since I was a kid. It isn’t something I would encourage anyone to do but it works for me. Brian

Your practice strokes have a follow thru but an actual putt doesnt and almost recoils.
That’s because in a practice stroke there is no collision.
When the head of the putter strikes the ball it slows down due to the collision.
with all due respect you dont need 33 ys of coaching and
50 ys of playing golf to understand that if you hole more puts then your handicap lowers
