Quenching SF100 Stainless steel using Arbor press for speed and flatness

  • I used to use a pair of squeeze clamps to hold the Quench plates closed but the arbor press is quicker and applies a bit more pressure.
The results are a very flat blade and a speeded up procedure with less fuss.
I doubt whether a bigger press would give any better results but it would be nice to have:)

Hi Sandy. Hope all is well. I use a woodworking vice with a couple of 1" thick aluminum plates where the wood cheeks would be and so you can just turn the vise handle down to clamp the knife and then use air as well to speed cooling.

The steel said don't you [Op]press me. Good evening Sandy, could not suppress a life of Brian reference.

Nice! Bet you did a few dry runs on that setup before you pulled the trigger the first time! This works on carbon steel blades too if you get them in the plates after your oil quench as soon as they are below 450C or so. Finishing them off in the plates makes them dead flat.

I know very little about quenching (other than quenching my thirst with a pint of ale) but I guess this method cools the whole piece evenly, which has to be good.

It just applies a buit more even pressure to the blade as it cools Steve. Gave consistent results and is quicker than the two clamp method

Dead flat! How did the hardness work out?

You won't get it as hard as carbon steel from Quench but I achieved 62Hrc for the SF100 Stainless steel then temper accordingly. 2 times two hours at 185 Celcius gave 59.5Hrc
