      @@trash_miner hehe...I have a Core 2 Duo utility PC with Windows 98SE, 10 and Kubuntu Linux 😜
It has SATA, IDE and DVD burner and floppy.
So I use it for formatting, imaging, burning etc dvds, cds and floppies ++.
But it does use a generic video driver in Windows 98 as it has a Radeon 6870 GPU.

I have maybe half a dozen beige boxes and motherboards on my shelfs, but honestly, retro laptops get the most love in my personal retro man-cave. My favourite laptop to use is still an EEEPC 901, it's so small and compact, it's a great DVD player once you connect an external drive, and it has more than enough power to run the games i care about (either via natively-installed XP, or via DOSBox)
Looks like you have a fun one here! I miss the times where laptops had some personality, and were not just macbook clones in one way or another.
    Love your work, cheers!

Me too! I used to take an old laptop that had the giddy up to run a certain emulator, install the OS that worked best with it and would turn it into a portable of whatever I was emulating. First one I did was an Amiga Laptop. Win UAE installed on Win 7. You boot it up and it went right into Amiga OS. I loved that. Nowadays with the speed of laptops, I could run multiples at the same time on one machine and switch between them.

Nice find Phill! I have the same laptop with the Athlon XP Mobile 2400+ and Radeon Mobility 9000. Mine have problems with IDE, but I have found out it is a common problem with VIA laptops of the era. I have a ThinkPad T43 I use for retro laptop gaming - I upgraded it with a 2.13GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, and a 64GB SSD. The killer feature though is the 64MB Radeon X300 graphics chipset it has, along with the 1400x1050 display I put in it. Makes for a really nice machine 😄
Only thing is the SATA to IDE adapter installed on the board causes some headaches especially with anything newer than XP. Perhaps one day I’ll bypass it and install the SSD directly into the board ^^

Nice, you start to check out Retro Laptops. I kinda dig those since they take less space, even though repairing those can be more annoying than fixing a Desktop.
And that's a AMD Athlon XP laptop?! Oh my gosh, That's a dream Retro Laptop for me. More so than an another 500-th Pentium III/Pentium 4 laptop.
That ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 allows us also to play late Windows 98 DX8.1/DX9 games, that support shaders and all sorts of a good stuff that e.g. ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 lacks, and it's also a DX7 max. Not that they won't work, but they (games) will lack certain effects, like let's say the better looking Water at highest textures in Call of Duty 2003, or NFS Most Wanted 2005 looking more like Hot Pursuit 2, without it's yellow filter, shaders and bloom. (Though MW2005 is more of a XP title than W98, but definitely that ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 is a solid choice.)

A few sketchy third party websites do host the bios upgrades for Visionary XP. As is often the case of vintage hardware/gadgets, the manufacturer either went out of business over 15 years ago, or has removed the driver files altogether (thanks Acer and Intel), leaving these sketchy sites the only place to turn to.

I had serious overheating problems with gaming on laptops, back in the day, so I dont use them anymore for any gaming, retro or not. A good advice: you can use a Laptop SATA to IDE Adapter model with a "flat" pcb and you can tear down a ssd and use just the small pcb. That way you can fit both in the hdd slot.

I remember these back in the day! If I recall They were Lidl specials in my town.? Great machine and it’s great to see you give the much improved SBEMU some love! 😃 and with regards to the memory issues, I found replacing himem and emm386 with himemx and jemmex. And I have simply made a boot menu at startup. With a few maximum ram flags, etc That for me solved a large chunk of the memory issues

      Jemmex.exe x=test i=test NOVME NOINVLPG

The two different sets of flags on each Jemmex entry one with Ems and the other without. It doesn’t solve everything though, and I’m in the middle of testing another tool called limitmem.
Between these 3 options most games should work. Duke nukem 3d, death rally etc work great with himemx and commander keen, wolvenstein etc work with Jemmex options

They are from 2005-2009 with some with early PCIe ATI or NVidia graphic, and they are the first laptops to have "decent" screen while still be able to run DOS, curious to see how you can slow them down for DOS games and if you can get sound from their integrated sound card.

Nice to see some retro lappies for a change. Older Latitudes and ThinkPads can often be picked up for next to nothing.
Another laptop I'd highly recommend for Windows 95/98 gaming is a Compaq Armada M700 which has a really nice, solidly built case w/ a titanium lid, a Pentium II or III CPU, an ATI Mobility Rage 3D graphics and also a SoundBlaster-compatible ESS Maestro sound chip.
In any case, make sure the hinges are in good shape and the display works and isn't too dark. Plastic parts may have visible cracks or other physical wear on them, so check for those as well.

Aladdin is infamous for not running well on machines. If you have too much ram it has issues, I believe my sound and music issues were caused by that. Luckily I found the solution and didn't need to set up alternative profiles to run games that want to use the base memory and for those that can use the expanded memory. I just ran MEMMAKER and freed up enough memory and didn't need to mess with anything else, it configured everything I needed I think.

It's the last Lenovo laptop to have full driver support for Windows XP and the CPU/GPU combo is powerful enough to play the vast majority of XP games at higher settings. Its the best portable thing for win95/late dos, 233MHz Pentium MMX, USB port, no 3D accel of course, SB16 DOS emulation, original drivers available. Its weak point is the soft touch cover, it didnt age well. If you have any idea how to revive or fresh it up a bit im all ears.
The other piece is a HP nx9420, 17 inch, Radeon X1600 for the old 3D titles until 2002-3, first thing bought refurbished in 2006, with hard-earned cash. :) The performance of the radeon is nowhere near the desktop variant, the clock speeds were significantly lowered. If anyone buys such things, its always good to look after the MHz-s. Handles anything prior to directx 9.0c. The older the better. Im always in the search of the lower cover plastics, mine have some minor damage around the left hinge, the plastics there couldnt handle the weight over the years.
Anything in a good shape and with dedicated graphics are well worth the price.

12:05 i think you're using an outdated version of that driver. the most recent up to date SBEMU has more flexible features such as fluid mixer controls and improved sound blaster compatibility.
i only noticed this due to the wonky sounding OPL FM Synthesis in the video. the newer driver release improves FM emulation to that of the DOSBox OPL core implementation; since this uses part of it's code base alongside MPXPlay.

A thing that came to mind tho is this:
is a Linux Distro a better alternative to play retro on newer hardware?
YES, Wxp, even W98, 95 and MSdos can still be installed on newer PCs, BUT the software and hardware support is already not there for a lot of things.
Could using Linux take the place of the low specs requirement of older OSs, while running both old games (or maybe even software) AND on top of that being a modern computer both in parts and use?

Coincidentally I was reinstalling Windows XP just today on a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook C1020 and came across one of the pitfalls of older laptops: screen scaling. This one in particular will only look good at its native 1024x768. Using 640x480 or 800x600 will result in either a black frame around the image or fullscreen with terrible scaling and almost unintelligible text.

Can't the memory issue be solved either via some program or by enabling the memory hole in BIOS? (if it has that option)
Generally I like the idea of retro gaming laptops, as they are also compact. I never thought it was a great idea to play current games with a modern laptop, but for retro games, I think that makes total sense. I think the bigger issue might be, that laptop tests might not be super interesting if you repeatedly do them, unless it's either a super unique laptop with exciting features or the opposite, where a lot of people might actually check out your video to see if it's worth buying it. But random laptops which are not "widely available" might not have a big appeal in terms of video coverage.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  2 месяца назад +1

Yes I believe there are tools and / or parameters you can use to limit memory. For sure something to investigate in the future. I had a look on eBay for old laptops but seems "old" there is not old for us, it's all fairly recent stuff.
