I've heard it said that, next to the Black Legion, the Iron Warriors are the most hated and feared of all the Traitor Legions for their sheer brutality in combat, use of corrupted technology and pragmatic, if ruthless approach to warfare. The 4th Legion make use of heavy artillery, fortifications, armored units and orbital bombardments to crush opposition. Rightly said to be experts in the art of military engineering, every Iron Warrior is trained to be devoid of anything approaching mercy and view casualties as utterly irrelevant as long as victory is achieved.
A fantastic video about a mighty legion and a fantastic Primarch, if I do say so myself. Highly recommend Angel Exterminatus to anyone looking for a good book featuring Iron Warriors and Perturabo.
Awesome video. I even considered the Iron Warriors my favorite traitor legion. Because of its unique character and story. Just imagine how the siege of Terra would have ended if Perturabo was still in charge of the siege and other legions listened to his commands Terra would have fallen sooner. Also thanks for having my Gmod picture “Iron Cage” 10:34. This is the 4th time that picture have been used on a 40k video here on RUclips.
New to 40K universe. Love the dialog and inspirational speeches. I hope that Amazon and Cavill are successful in bringing 40K to us or may the chaos take them!
Check your expectations at the door. I have very little faith that Amazon will do the franchise the justice it deserves. I'd love to see a tv of the Horus Heresy but I doubt they would be able to get away with some of the violence that is portrayed in the books. Some of that stuff was pretty gnarly. I hope I'm surprised and it's good, but if the garbage that The Rings of Power was is any indication, I'm not sure. We'll just have to see.
Awesome job and video, you did a fantastic job bringing the Iron warriors style and lore to life, I read storm of Iron as one of my first 40k books and you did a fantastic job on my favorite legion! Iron within Iron without
Iron Warriors may seem to be blunt and one-dimensional, but to think them as fools is the hight of folly, for their tactics and strategies (especially after Heresy) make them seem as absolute masters of modern warfare. Had their Primarch not been such a callous bastard, Iron Warriors would've been regarded as one of the most deadly Astartes in history, Imperium's anvil upon which all of His enemies would find their destruction.
Imagine being so good at using terminator armor, your legion literally writes the book on it. Every single weakness was felt and adaptations created. Every single strength, used and then amplified by every modification and synergy conceivable. When astartes think terminator armor, they still have to rely on iron warriors doctrine.
As magnus sees perturabo, the crimson kings eye looks at perturabo in sorrow as the lord of iron continously works. "Why are you here magnus." Magnus sighed at perturabos contempt but nodded. "I came to see a brother. Is that not enough?" Perturabo did not glance magnus as he worked "Your a servant of chaos are you not. Of course im skeptical." Magnus snickered "Ever the observer. Very well i shall be blunt. Im worried for you. You havent left the eye in who knows how long, never helped your sons at all and youve isolated yourself. I might be chaos, but i worry for you as a brother should." Perturabo was silent. But he got up from the work bench and motioned to his creation. A young girl,but...incomplete. "Ive been trying to bring her back...my sister. Before all of this." Magnus was quiet as he recalled the devistation of olympia, speaking carefuly. "...i think thats a admirable gesture. But her soul is in the great ocean. It won't work." Perturabo slowly nodded "I know. But i have to try." Magnus nodded and proceeded to start leaving. "I know you hate father for all hes done to us...but finding some semblance of salvation in his light is not a bad thing. I suggest leaving chaos while you still can and find some modicum of redemption. I never will." As magnus left, perturabo looked to where magnus left, then to the workbench... and then to forgebreaker. "You are lucky." vashtorr spoke from the shadows. "Lucky how?" "In that you still have people who care for you, even if you dont seem to realize it." "I made my choice when i betrayed the emporor. If i could go back,id do everything as it was. ...but the time for sentiment has passed. Back to work?" The arkifane nodded as they worked elsewhere.
As good as this personal excerpt of yours was, I do not believe that Vashtorr would show any kind of sympathy to anyone. I am honestly certain that, as a demon, Vashtorr is simply incapable of showing anything close to sympathy. The Magnus part was more believable in my opinion.
@@thewolfbloodwarrior8788 well i figured vashtorr would speak logicaly during the last part but yeah fair. My headcanon for chaos magnus is that despite his hate to the space wolves and leman for the unjust actions of prospero and being a daemon prince still does care for his brothers even though the gods made puppets and slaves of them, especially perty who likely might have a geniune chance of redemption if he actually forgives himself and lets go
@@lolbots686 I don't see that happening. Perty is way too bitter and resentful to ever be able to let go of any slight, be they real or imagined. And with Chaos having his soul and his mind warped beyond imagining any chance for redemption for him is just a fairy tale.

Granted there is a ton of lore so I may just not have read the books that cover it yet, but is it not a little less clear and a bit of a mystery about perterabo becoming a daemon prince? Isn't there a possibility he never actually ascended at all? I mean just perty, not the legion. It always felt out of character for him to become a daemon prince and accept and embrace chaos. Traitor sure, but perterabo hated chaos and thought it was weakness. I always thought it could be a lie and his armor was keeping him alive. That said if vashtor becomes a chaos God, I think perterabo would be an insanely perfect daemon prince to him because perty is an engineering savant which I'd vashtors thing. And I could be wrong on all of it, but I always felt like what I know of his ascension was totally incomplete and something was happening out of sight
@James Espinosa I mean if someone was going to do that it would be him. I truly don't think he is a daemon prince.... yet. I think it's a lie. I think that armor keeps him going after fulgrim destroyed his spleen becoming a rape snake. BTW I love the unicron reference. When I was a kid I used to watch that animated transformers movie like every single day on vhs.
@@brooklynkeith2877 it's possible this could be the thing that pushes him to be a daemon prince. It would be the first entity he could actually relate to. I think they'd be wasting both characters by not at least making that connection. Too many iron warriors exist for violence to think they couldn't fall to chaos, but I can't see perty being a daemon prince of chaos undivided. He has no love or respect for any of those gods.
I confess I pity the iron warriors, even if traitors, had they remained loyal Horus would not have accomplished much during the Heresy, as Perturabos did all the heavy lifting, especially during the Siege of Terra PS: r.i.p. Barabas Dantioch
I want to play this whole thing as missions they need to add all of these stories to spacemarine 2 or make a whole hersy game with all missions from all the chhapters loyalist and traitors it would be so epic with all the old power armor sets and weapons and chance to face and play as the thunder warriors
Great video! Though I would've preferred more depth when you mentioned the Triarchs, perhaps you could do the named IW characters in some sort of "compilation overview" video.
I truly hope that GW retcon Perturabo’s status as a daemon prince. It doesn’t suit his character in my opinion, surely he would not be a slave to the ruinous powers when the strength of his legion was their own. Iron Within Iron Without brothers
Well the canon reason for it so basically Fulgrim tore out his soul and Perturabo was slowly dying because of that. But even so Perturabo would probably just strive to worthier live through machinery and a iron will or die. Iron does not bend!
They are the coldest of the traitors. I would hate facing them at war because they aren't here for fun or passion. If you meet them, it's because you are on their way and there is literally nothing personal.
@9:30 it’s not knowing it wouldn’t be forgiven, it’s believing it wouldn’t be. E would not have given a shitakke mushroom in the long run that Perty genocided the planet
Horus really pulled a fast one on the 4th, huh? First, he gave them more and more mundane tasks and fewer "rewards," and as the anger of the 4th grew, he blamed it all on the emperor
Despite all the batsh*it stuff Perturabo and the IW pulled off, the most awesome moment was him, lifting up Harkor in his Terminator Amour and just ripping it off of him piece by piece.
Peterturbo becoming a demon primarch is kinda out of character imo. Would be cool to still have a traitor non demon primarch who hasn’t been assassinated to prove a point
I'm sorry, but I have to step in. There is zero ambiguity about what was happening at the Iron Cage. The imperial fists were getting absolutely decimated. They lost 78% of their chapter. They were getting handily beaten by the Iron Warriors. Only the Ultramarines stepping in kept their chapter from being wiped out. They weren't at proper fighting strength for decades after that. Then what happened? The iron Warriors just left. There was no mutual destruction, there was no ambiguity. The iron warriors absolutely smashed the imperial fists.
“They were unable to break the Imperial Fists’ defenses at Terra” … They did though…? “If it weren’t for the intervention of Guilliman, it is debated which legion would’ve emerged victorious [at the Iron Cage]” No it isn’t. An Iron Warriors victory was all but inevitable until Guilliman showed up. If there’s any debate to be had, it’s whether the Imperial Fists would’ve survived as a legion without his interference.
Yes Dorn actually personally threw back several waves of Iron Warrior counter attacks that would have over run and ended the Imperial Fists. Even when Guilliman arrived, it wasnt a simple win Perturabo had void superiority (Due to his earlier ambush and victory in the void battle) and still had excellent emplacement It took a combined orbital bombardment and massed Ultramarine ground attack to rescue the beleaguered Imperial Fists. EVEN THEN The Iron Warriors went on to be one of the largest of the traitor legions, being able to stand against Abbadon as the Black Legions most dangerous and powerful enemy. So yeah, not even remotely close to a draw However, our friend the remembrancer probably did some reading up on thr Wiki before the video Hence the mistake
They failed to break the defenses of the imperial palace and retired with peturabo when he decided to bow out. The continued dogged defense and remaining defenses of the imperial palace bought the time needed for reinforcements to approach, forcing Horus hand. As for the iron cage, we may never know for sure. We have multiple versions of the story. The iw version of the story says they would have won. The ultra and/or fist version basically says the fists simply wouldn't give up and that Dorns final act would be peturabos death (or that peturabo was unwilling to pay the price necessary to finish them). Maybe we will get more detail in post heresy novels?
@@daleandrade8140 pretty much every single place I ever heard the Iron Cage get mentioned unequivocally stated that the Imperial Fists were heading the way of the Dodo until Guilliman showed up. Also, have they retconned things again? I could swear the Iron Warriors breached the Imperial Palace. Is this some Siege of Terra conflicting sources kind of situation again (like Falkus Kibre apparently dying in the SoT books, pretty definitively as well, but being just fine and dandy in the recent Arks of Omen story development)?
@@jordinagel1184 Goes all the way back to the index astartes series. The IW and Imperial Fist articles have different versions of the same event. It's one of the things that started the fun rivalry between the two chapters. That said, we are creeping up on the end of the Horus heresy series, so maybe we will get more cool details or a definitive answer? Would be an opportunity for them to play around with peturabos backstory (maybe retcon his demon prince status, etc.).
@@daleandrade8140 him being a demon prince never made much sense anyway… Would be fun to see him be something different, not a demon prince, but no longer a primarch either
The Wiki reads: "The Emperor of Mankind, in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, did not necessarily prefer the Imperial Fists over the Iron Warriors; rather, he had different roles and expectations for these two Space Marine Legions. While the Iron warriors were highly effective in breaking enemy fortifications, their temperament and methods made them less suitable for roles requiring unwavering loyalty." What roles would those be? I am trying to find out if the Emperor did ignore them but it seems Perturabo just exaggerated the neglect and disrespect the emperor supposedly had for his IV legion? Was Perturabo a drama queen or his grievances were legitimate?
Drama queen, if you ask me. I think his step-sister put it pretty correct during their final encounter on Olympia. Perturabo seems to love to pity himself, the most Legions fought hard campaigns during the great crusade, but the Iron Warriors always made it extra hard on them self. You have this guy who always talks about iron will and iron strenght, always avoid of emotions beside frustration and dissapointment, uses his legion like a bulldozer. Decimates his legion right after reunion, throws temper tantrums at any given chance and then wonders "Why does nobody loves me?! Why Daddy never gives me a huggy?! It's not ME it's THEM!". "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."~Maslow.
@@cdev2117 Yes and no. At the end he was fed up and got emotional and threw a fit, I mean what could be less stoic than joining traitors to fight your "oppressors"? But in the begining he did act as iron within and he is right his legions were used on both sides without care, they were one of the only legions that were there just as a stepping stool, countless times were the Iron warriors matched with campaigns and battles that didnt suit their style at all which resulted in catastrophic loss of life and hardware. Imagine as an example, sending in the black templars for a stealth based mission. He put up with it for too long and saw his brothers commended but not him. In the end he did break, but lets face it Iron bends. I am just hoping he didnt break fully by turning daemon.
Perturabo is a god at planning and siege warfare but him putting up with Mr b0nersnakes bullshit as well as angron having anger....on for a lack of a better word....didn't exactly make his position at the siege ideal.....
I created a Primaris successor chapter with the iron warriors gene seed called the iron chalice but instead of an actual chapter I just made one reiver cause I made him a lone wolf hunting iron warriors in the name of the Emperor.
Why does the emperor and horus have giant lightning claws in that one picture Is it like a father and son thing because horus was the first primarch found and spent more time with Big E
I think the Black Library did it as a symbolic type thing The Emperor used a massive Lightning claw during the great crusade (Its name is unknown) it was one of his favored weapons As such, when Horus declared himself the true Emperor, he also wielded a claw... The Talon of Horus Horus' claw having been forged by the Dark mechanicum in secret and Kalebor Hal (The Fabricator general of the Mechanicum) Being the Dark claw to the Emperors lighting claw.
15:35 correction. The Omperial fists were losing badly but they keep trying to break the iron cage due to Dorns stubbornness, if it weren't for Guilliman they would have all died.
You have to acknowledge, respect & admire the fact that they're getting shit done, whenever they go into battle, they basically carried the Traitors during the majority of the Heresy. BUT in the end of the day, they're still just a bunch of insecure, jealous children, abused by their also insecure, jealous and borderline autistic daddy, who was taking out his frustrations on them & the enemy and they in turn, do the same with the rest of the galaxy. That ''Iron Warriors vs Imperial Fists''- parody animated short says it best. Iron Warrior to Imperial Fist: ''Your Primarch is dead!" Imperial Fist: " That might be Iron Loser, but unlike your's, our Primarch loved us."

I like these guys and still have a piece of art I found related to them as a RP character, I used him as a Pirate Captain that loves carrying a mace that he taken from a Word bearer Chaplain.
This channel’s series on the legions is the best on RUclips. Every episode is essential listening. Great work!
Love the Iron Warriors and hope we get more good Chaos stuff on them as well as prior to their fall. They are like the Iron Hands with how they get overlooked by writers and alot of fans.
Thank you for all your art, I got a big collection of W40K art for my desktop backgrounds, a lot of your art makes up it's contents.

A number of chronological errors…
It’s close to being a definitive Iron Warrior video.
Iron within Iron without
Correction: Perturabo's Step sister is called Calliphone, FYI
I love this Legion, Iron within, Iron without.
Not entirely the biggest Iron Warriors fan but legit enjoy them regardless.
I just realized the music in the background is the Mechanicus OST. That is an absolutely perfect piece of music all throughout that OST.
Imagine being so good at using terminator armor, your legion literally writes the book on it. Every single weakness was felt and adaptations created. Every single strength, used and then amplified by every modification and synergy conceivable. When astartes think terminator armor, they still have to rely on iron warriors doctrine.
Fantastic summary of the iron IV!
Perturabo's sister's name was Calliphone, not Persephone. Just sayin'.
As magnus sees perturabo, the crimson kings eye looks at perturabo in sorrow as the lord of iron continously works.
"Why are you here magnus."
Magnus sighed at perturabos contempt but nodded.
"I came to see a brother. Is that not enough?"
Perturabo did not glance magnus as he worked
"Your a servant of chaos are you not. Of course im skeptical."
Magnus snickered
"Ever the observer. Very well i shall be blunt. Im worried for you. You havent left the eye in who knows how long, never helped your sons at all and youve isolated yourself. I might be chaos, but i worry for you as a brother should."
Perturabo was silent. But he got up from the work bench and motioned to his creation. A young girl,but...incomplete.
"Ive been trying to bring her back...my sister. Before all of this."
Magnus was quiet as he recalled the devistation of olympia, speaking carefuly.
"...i think thats a admirable gesture. But her soul is in the great ocean. It won't work."
Perturabo slowly nodded
"I know. But i have to try."
Magnus nodded and proceeded to start leaving.
"I know you hate father for all hes done to us...but finding some semblance of salvation in his light is not a bad thing. I suggest leaving chaos while you still can and find some modicum of redemption. I never will."
As magnus left, perturabo looked to where magnus left, then to the workbench... and then to forgebreaker.
"You are lucky." vashtorr spoke from the shadows.
"Lucky how?"
"In that you still have people who care for you, even if you dont seem to realize it."
"I made my choice when i betrayed the emporor. If i could go back,id do everything as it was. ...but the time for sentiment has passed. Back to work?"
The arkifane nodded as they worked elsewhere.
@@thewolfbloodwarrior8788 Nah, It can happen, Pert is a builder, he hated his skills being used to war only... He yearns for creation and not destruction so he can be redeemed.
@@thewolfbloodwarrior8788 well perty might not even be a daemon prince to begin with. Theres a theory, and a damm good one that perty isnt a daemon prince, and has been searching for a cure for his wound from fulgrim
Honestly if guilaman finds perty, likely with the big es help,he might redeem perty or at least make sure not many iron warriors are actively fighting the inperium
Madness???? Madness!!!??? It's sheer logic my friend. Iron warriors will collect all 40000 Warhammers
I mean they are litterly the only faction that even plays Warhammer
I've been waiting for this since the Iron hands!
The Iron warriors turned out to be just another silicon valley startup
I wish iron warriors on the table top got some bonuses in melee since every siege ended in IW legionaries charging into the fort and butchering every living being in melee like pent up berserkers
8:45 A WARHAMMER 🔨. 15:45 Perturabo, Primarch of the Iron warriors legion; becomes a demon prince of Chaos Undecided. 26:40 THE DARK MECHANICUM, CHAOS MECHANICUS IS A THING!?!
If the IW had a primarch who wasn't a self-destructive frail-egoed little genius, probably would have been one of, if not the best of the legions.
I just watched them crush xenos like cans of soda😂😂 but the whole cutting off demonic limbs to replace them with machine I feel that 😂😂😂😂
Granted there is a ton of lore so I may just not have read the books that cover it yet, but is it not a little less clear and a bit of a mystery about perterabo becoming a daemon prince?
Yeah perty becoming a demon prince made no sense to me, but i could see his legion teaming up with Vashtor & darkmech made more sense.
I kind of hope he turned himself into a Deamon Engine. Possibly even possessing his Deamon Planet Unicron style!!
I just discovered your channel and the narration is so good! I'm addicted
I confess I pity the iron warriors, even if traitors, had they remained loyal Horus would not have accomplished much during the Heresy, as Perturabos did all the heavy lifting, especially during the Siege of Terra
PS: r.i.p. Barabas Dantioch
The one and only traitor legion that I would ever join if I fell to chaos.

The iron 4ths first deployment was in gigantic burrowing tunnelers from Mars in the antarctic campaign during the unification wars right ?
Your focus on individual characters makes your lore videos into true stories... somehow even enjoy these more than Lutein's!!!!
Please keep it up.
I really dislike the yellow/black stripes on their armor, can you paint them without it?

I would prefer if GW retconned Perty’s Ascension. He should remain mortal but within a modified power suit. Lorgar is our demon undivided.

I never liked the Idea that becoming traitor meant you had to Join chaos
@@ScouserLegend I could be wrong but I think the Night Lords looked down upon the Chaos Forces.
Horus really pulled a fast one on the 4th, huh? First, he gave them more and more mundane tasks and fewer "rewards," and as the anger of the 4th grew, he blamed it all on the emperor
2:57 what kind of effing weapon is THAT ? goddamn
you tell this man to build some fancy stuff and not war stuff, he would have nuked horus’ ass out of orbit
A Battle of Tallarn video would be awesome
Despite all the batsh*it stuff Perturabo and the IW pulled off, the most awesome moment was him, lifting up Harkor in his Terminator Amour and just ripping it off of him piece by piece.
That guy in the thumbnail kind of looked like Megatron, honestly.
Peterturbo becoming a demon primarch is kinda out of character imo. Would be cool to still have a traitor non demon primarch who hasn’t been assassinated to prove a point
Victory is all we Know.
Imagine if Perty had remained loyal and got along with Dorn. The Heresy would've ended in about an hour
The imperial fists and rogal dorn would have been utterly destroyed if the ultra marines had not arrived, its clear who would have won.
IRON WITHIN IRON WITHOUT
“They were unable to break the Imperial Fists’ defenses at Terra”
… They did though…?
“If it weren’t for the intervention of Guilliman, it is debated which legion would’ve emerged victorious [at the Iron Cage]”
No it isn’t. An Iron Warriors victory was all but inevitable until Guilliman showed up. If there’s any debate to be had, it’s whether the Imperial Fists would’ve survived as a legion without his interference.
Yes
Dorn actually personally threw back several waves of Iron Warrior counter attacks that would have over run and ended the Imperial Fists.
Even when Guilliman arrived, it wasnt a simple win
Perturabo had void superiority (Due to his earlier ambush and victory in the void battle) and still had excellent emplacement
It took a combined orbital bombardment and massed Ultramarine ground attack to rescue the beleaguered Imperial Fists.
EVEN THEN
The Iron Warriors went on to be one of the largest of the traitor legions, being able to stand against Abbadon as the Black Legions most dangerous and powerful enemy.
So yeah, not even remotely close to a draw
However, our friend the remembrancer probably did some reading up on thr Wiki before the video
Hence the mistake

Imperial fist I am sorry but you do not only fight me, but my brother as well lol iron within hydra Dominatus
That last quote is kind of confusing me, I thought the emperor obliterated Horus's soul entirely? How is he supposed to return?
The Wiki reads:
"The Emperor of Mankind, in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, did not necessarily prefer the Imperial Fists over the Iron Warriors; rather, he had different roles and expectations for these two Space Marine Legions.
While the Iron warriors were highly effective in breaking enemy fortifications, their temperament and methods made them less suitable for roles requiring unwavering loyalty."
What roles would those be?

Why does the emperor and horus have giant lightning claws in that one picture
Is it like a father and son thing because horus was the first primarch found and spent more time with Big E
I think the Black Library did it as a symbolic type thing
The Emperor used a massive Lightning claw during the great crusade (Its name is unknown) it was one of his favored weapons
As such, when Horus declared himself the true Emperor, he also wielded a claw... The Talon of Horus
Horus' claw having been forged by the Dark mechanicum in secret and Kalebor Hal (The Fabricator general of the Mechanicum)
Being the Dark claw to the Emperors lighting claw.
15:35 correction. The Omperial fists were losing badly but they keep trying to break the iron cage due to Dorns stubbornness, if it weren't for Guilliman they would have all died.
Calliphone, my friend. Her name was Calliphone!
Iron Warrior to Imperial Fist: ''Your Primarch is dead!"
Imperial Fist: " That might be Iron Loser, but unlike your's, our Primarch loved us."
