KOF96 プロローグ
前回大会でオロチの力に飲み込まれ消滅したルガールによって開催された2度の大会が終結して1年、新たに開催される事になった本大会は、巨大企業数社のスポンサードによる全世界的スケールのメジャー大会として開催された。
世界各地で予選が開催され、前2回のKOF常連チームが本戦に顔を並べる中、何とそれぞれが争い世界の覇権を握ろうと野望を抱いていたあのギース・ハワード、ヴォルフガング・クラウザー、Mr.ビッグの3人がチームを組む形でエントリーするという驚愕な事態となった。その一方で、前回の大会で京を倒し損ねた庵もまたルガールの秘書を務めていた2人の女性マチュアとバイスの二人と新たにチームを組む形で出場しており、怒チームでは指揮官のハイデルンが後方からの指揮を担当する形でチームを抜けた代わりに彼の養女でもある新妹隊員のレオナ・ハイデルンが加入していた。
実は今回の大会にも大きな裏が隠されており、大会の主催者である神楽ちづるは、「三種の神器」と呼ばれる能力を守る為に存在してきた三つの一族（草薙家、八神家、神楽家）のうちの一つ「神楽家」の末裔であった。彼女は人類の滅亡を望んでいる地球意思「オロチ」に対抗しうる力として、オロチの復活を目論む「オロチ四天王」と戦えるだけの実力を備える戦士を探し出そうとしていたのである。優勝チームの実力を自ら戦って確かめるちづるであったが、そこに「三種の神器」の末裔を滅ぼそうとするオロチ四天王の一角・吹き荒ぶ風のゲーニッツが突如乱入した。
自らの行使する暴風をもってして会場の全てを破壊しつくそうとするゲーニッツであったが、最後は「人間」としての本能によって発動させた庵の「紅い炎」と京の力によってゲーニッツは倒される末路を迎えた。しかし、大会の終結直後、庵は「血の暴走」によってゲーニッツと袂を分かったマチュアとバイスの二人を手に掛け、レオナもまた自身がオロチの血を引いていた上にゲーニッツの手引きにより自らの手で両親を殺害してしまった真実を知る事となった。
