    Ian, your content is absolutely amazing. There is an overwhelming amount of blender content on the internet, but they are full of misinformation, bad practices, and a lot of "just do this" without any explanation or rationale behind it. Your videos remind me of my first year in university, the classic day 1: "forget everything you've learned so far". It's immediate to anyone watching you clearly know what you're talking about, you have a great way of explaining it, defend your position through examples, and then illustrate the proper way and the reasons why. I'm not sure why you decided to stop producing content, but please let me know what it would take to motivate you to do more. More subs, patron, a beer? Your videos are decorated with some of the nicest comments on RUclips, I'm more than confident your subscribers would be happy to help promote the channel if we knew there would be more coming down the pipe.

    • @ianmcglasham
      @ianmcglasham  Год назад +3

      Hi Vanguard2323. It is really generous of you to say that. The comments have been kind, and I am always grateful for that. There is more content coming relatively soon. I have a primer on cubic interpolation ("panel beating" we call it; I hate unnecessarily technical names for things. It always seems to lead to gatekeeping, which is the last thing newer modellers need to deal with!). I was recently surprised to find zero explanations of this powerfully technique anywhere on RUclips, so I am making one as we speak. Unfortunately, my real work takes up so much of my time that it is difficult for me to make regular videos at the moment. I am also making a website dedicated to professional modelling techniques, which hopefully will be of some use to a few people. Thanks again. It really does mean a lot.

      @@ianmcglasham , glad to hear it and I very much look forward to it. Hopefully not too long of a post here, but there were two epiphanies when watching your videos. As someone who focuses on game assets, I often overlook/disregard edge flow, for one because I'm going to reduce everything down to a few bevels, and two, sadly so many other youtubers call out edge flow and topology as a tool or a "nice to have" during modelling for the convenience of adding edge loops, refining, etc. Epiphany #1 is that edge flow is important in order to accurately model a shape and its contours, and #2 as a result it also ensures it catches the light in a realistic manner. Normally if I'm going to make a rook for a game, I'll just extrude the towers and let the normal map do the work... Well, I remodeled my rook based on your technique and attention to edge flow, my rook was about 50k tris with subsurf:2 when finished. I managed to manually reduced it down to 5k, but I retained the edge flow in the process, baked a normal map from high to low, and the result is, WOW.
      Have a look, I can't tell them apart.

    Ridge clusters? I'm always happy when names are given to common problems or useful techniques (Radial Connection Reduction for example). It helps your brain connect the dots to help you navigate your way to a solution to avoid issues or, in the case of useful techniques, a nudge towards the right tool or process to help you on your way to great topology. It might be a good idea to start listing these terms in a PDF document to add to the Patreon benefits package?

    • @ianmcglasham
      @ianmcglasham  2 года назад +2

      I think that would be a really useful document. There are a few important modelling terms I have not introduced yet so I may make it a document which I update after I have expalined the techniques. Good idea. Many Thanks.

    Ian, you are seriously incredible and the best teacher I've seen in the Blender modeling community. Criminally underrated and this filled the knowledge gap I had been looking for. Maybe I haven't been looking in the right corners, but it's so hard to find this level of quality mixed into a pool mirroring the same 'lazy' practices. I've learned more from your series than I have learned from hundreds of hours of other videos. I don't think I've ever learned so much from something that seemed so basic and it really translated well. You absolutely nailed it: perfection with advanced techniques engineered in easy to approach scenarios, with many problem scenarios described perfectly. As someone who had no clue how to approach sub-d properly, by the King video I could just hear you describe a next step you'd take before you spoke. Or approach it a completely different way after explaining why. There was just so much to learn in this short series which was packed densely and approachably that I'll have to watch it again. And that's what makes them fantastic tutorials and you a fantastic teacher: the scenarios are presented in such a 'basic' and relatable environment.
    In fact, I almost overlooked the series because "modeling a chess set" seemed like it would be just another blender tutorial extrude plane starter kit explaining things that I already knew. I, personally, was lucky enough to stumble on your channel with the "connecting cylinder" video, could immediately see absolute mastery, then stumbled on the blenderhelp video, and knew I had to watch the entire thing. The only thing I was disappointed about was that you didn't have more, even if I had to pay for them (and I tried to see if you had more 'for sale'): I'd love to see you model that train, those sunglasses, a full car, etc. Will do everything I can to send people your way, because you are that darn good.

    Using Inset as a way to add control loops in an accurately equidistant manner is a great tip. Using Seams to colourise edges that are important to help control sharpness so that they can be seen at-a-glance is also cool. One could say it Seams like the way forward. Sorry for that shamelessly intended pun. Please don't unfriend me 🙂

    • @ianmcglasham
      @ianmcglasham  2 года назад +2

      Hi BIG BM. Glad you like them! There aren't really any topology references for the more unusal techniques. They come from my time working in studios where the techniques are often closely guarded secrets! You will struggle to find anything about control loops, radial connection reduction, radial connection expansion, ridge clusters, termination, non-radical flow and many other really useful things that I use. I will cover them all eventually and I am creating a written guide to topology but it is slow going as it is a huge area! In the meantime, I do like the "pushing points topology workbook" and "anatomy for 3D artists: the essential guide for CG professionals. Cheers!
