I know Border Collies are intelligent but should you try to focus on one of these exercises at a time or can they handle learning multiple exercises at once?
I started teaching these commands today and I had the best day ever with my dog. He was calmer today than any other day since we've gotten him 6 months ago. Today was the first day he didn't try to eat one of my cats. He loves these commands.
Owned a Border Collie from the time he was 6 weeks old-the first 6 months was a nightmare. He literally chewed everything in sight, including the reclining handle on my brand new Lazyboy chair. But after that,he became this wonderful friend who I loved with all my heart.Buster became a great friend. He loved being part of the family.Sadly he passed at 11 years of age,and I still think fondly of him 12 years later.✌️
This training is Gold, my dog is now 9 months old and every day she does things that reflect the training I followed in this video 7 months ago. I literally cannot praise this content enough, I have a beautifully behaved boarder collie as a result of the foundation that was set using this training. Thank you so much McCann dogs 😊
That's awesome, I've got a down payment on a border collie, ill be bringing her home in a few weeks. She's my first border collie and im excited to work with her.
@@Lia72092Mine is 11 weeks now. I did much of this but the ‘crate training’ was a non-starter. Mine would not stop pining and biting the bars no matter how much time I spent with treats and calming her. I could get her calm while I was interacting: but a step away and she was in deep distress. I gave up. I’ve never even known anyone use ‘crates’ with their dog until the last few years anyway. She’ll tolerate being in a room with the door closed if I need to keep her contained-so I leave it at that.
This trainer, she seems amazing. I love how she interacts with the puppy. I dunno why I’m actually watching, I lost my border last year and is not even ready for a new yet.
My new puppy is not a border collie, but he acts like this most of the time. It's so nice to see a dog that is being a bit more crazy so i can learn how to work with him. Its discouraging when i see other puppies learning training that seem so well behaved and calm already lol
I was one of the few lucky people who could take their dog to work. As a border (brown n white) he learned quickly. Training was constant (little and often) as he was with me 24/7. Folk thought I was good with dogs. The truth is it was the other way around. You could see him figure things out and the "A-Haa!!!" moment when the penny dropped. Even before he passed away at 14 he was still as sharp as a tack mentally. Amazing dog, so laid back, open and inquisitive (not laser focused like some BC's) unbelievably good socially and situationally even when off the lead. We'd had a few over the years but Treacle was that once in a lifetime dog.
They certainly are. Our BC once growled at me as I was going to sit next to her on the sofa (never heard her growl before), I guess she was warning me not to sit on her legs, I was quite offended that she would think I'd do that and said word for word:- "ohh! If you're worried about me sitting on you how about next time I come back to sit next to you you sit up, let me sit down and then lay back down against me?" Every single time since she would sit up on the sofa, allow me to sit down and then would return to sprawling over me
Wow, that pup is very high drive. Both of my Border Collies were (thankfully) a lot more laid back but this little girl is probably what you want for a disc dog.
Got an 11month old border collie now and we got her at 10 months. Last owner did not teach her anything and she didn’t even know what sit was. We are new dog owners probably shouldn’t have started out with this breed but they were going to give her to a shelter so we took her in. We have taught her a few things already and I am just so amazed by this video! Wish I could’ve had her when she was younger and I had lore experience but we love her and I want to be a better pawrent to her because that is what she deserves :)
I miss my border collie girl too, we lost her on Sept 8th, to a blood disorder she was 14yrs old. Liela was the Most clever dog I’ve ever had, trained her from 8 weeks old and knew everything. She even worked out how to use the door armrest in the car at a young age and lean into it when she popped her head out the window 😆 Its been over 3 months now and I’m looking for another border collie pup.
I have a border collie that is 15 yrs old. Beautiful dog. I got another border collie Christmas (a present from my son). They are the best dogs for families. Great dogs to train and they learn fast. They are also great guard dogs and are very protective of their families. Oh yes they do have a lot of energy!
Collecting our first collie pup, from Scotland in October. We have an older Labrador and this refresher training for us has been invaluable Thank you xx
If you want high energy, get a Brittany Spaniel :) But you better be ready to deal with him LOL! He was bred to run dead out, no resting, no stopping, no piddling for 10 straight hours. Next day, he can do it again!!!
I was on a waiting list to get a border collie pup that's going to be born in April. Today the breeder told me she might have a cancelation on a puppy in her current litter which means I might be getting my pup in April. I am so excited and doing so much research and this video was very helpful. Thank you.
We had border collies when I was growing up and I’m getting one real soon, but I was never there when our dogs were trained so I’m binging all the training videos and this is so educational
Mine will be 3 in November they are eager to learn and I do have problems with bolting so we have to work on that. They are also willing to learn a second language as well. We have our commands in a different language. He has no problem with it.
Don't have a puppy, barely kinda thinking about getting one, so now I must binge ALL sorts of great resources to learn everything I can before making my decision.
Great trainer with great tips. However, I didn't hear her say that these type of trainings must continue daily and at 10 - 15 mins at a time. Otherwise, a few mins weekly won't do anything positive.
@@deendrew36 Hate to say it but that's why you never have a dog as a single person for the most part. Great training tips but the only thing I'd say is at the start when she was in the crate and cried you gave her a treat. Completely understand that you're training her to stay and not rush but it also trains her that if she cries she gets food! Which she was starting to do :) Its just something I noticed and I feel for new collie owners its an easy thing to accidentally teach as our collies are incredibly smart ❤ My collie pup Ollie is really enjoying gentle walks in Yorkshire hoping when hes a little older to gently start him on longer 20 mile hikes He has awesome recall and brilliant obedience already ❤❤

Watch films of what border collies were born to do, working livestock. It's a beautiful thing to see. And hopefully it will make you realise how special intelligent and athletic they are. If you really want to get a collie you must be able to commit yourself to giving them what they need. Don't get one just because you like the idea. So many good dogs go to waste because of unsuitable owners.

My 2 yo rescue I got over the summer already knew some tricks. sit, shake, etc (fun discovering!). In a very short time, maybe 3 "lessons" over a day and a half, I taught him left and right. He'll do that over and over and over for me. He knows I love it. He needs attention? left right left right...etc etc. lol I'm trying to figure out how to keep him from getting slipped up when I say left multiple times or right multiple times in a row. It's all one thing to him. And my early correction when he gave right when I wanted his left is interesting. Maybe he's constantly "correcting" in his mind? lol I'm in my 50s and wish I'd had a border in my teens. I had an Irish Setter so i'm not complaining heh, but a border would have been insane. I would have loved that. I bought him one of those rubber things you put treats in to get him to interact with stuff like that more. I see borders chasing frisbees but he won't even fetch. He mainly tears toys up. Maybe that thing will help. After a day he was mainly sniffing it knowing there's stuff in there. I'll bet he messes with that much more over time.
Wouldn't all that attention when she comes out of the crate promote separation anxiety? I've been walking away after opening the door as if him being in the crate was no big deal. I love the idea of putting treats in there before opening the door. I'll definitely do that now, thanks.
I feel like the "treat" after crying is kind of training the dog to cry for a treat when in the cage? I guess there's no other way to do it though when you're fliming lol
I say no, bad dog when he whines. I do not say his name as that's part of his reward when he does good. The most he whines is 5min and stops. I only corrected him a couple times.
I’m getting a border collie tommrow a few days before 8 weeks we have currently a Westie so it’s quite a different dog. I plan on training the puppy early on since we didn’t with our other dog this is a big help thank you ❤️

I love these crates and wish they still made them! I have two, a medium and large, but would love to have one of this size for puppies. A great transition from an airline kennel to a soft-sided crate for young dogs. They fold up so nicely!
Love your videos! Especially the progress bar! I have a suggestion, could you maybe make a video about how to stop a border collie from herding moving things like a car, cats, bicycles and children? Thanks!
Hi there, Eclipsery! The breeding breeds can be stimulated by motion around them. Doing some stationary exercises with some of those distractions around is always a great way to show your dog that you’re more rewarding than those other things. For a lot of herding breeds, the act of watching/stalking the distraction can be reward enough for them to choose that thing over you! Teaching a “Leave It” skill can be helpful to avoid getting to that point. Here’s a video that will be helpful to teach your dog to check back in with you: How To Teach Your Puppy To Leave It - ruclips.net/video/tDYzRgf3sOI/видео.html Happy Training ~Ken
I have a rescue BC. I am his 5th owner! He was out of control when I took him in but, but regardless a GREAT dog. my advice? Don't get a border collie unless you understand their needs, instincts and traits. They are not starter dogs. When I got Murphy, he had PTSD and was afraid of men, was reactive with strangers, was anxious, and had some deeply ingrained bad habits. Two years later he is a transformed dog. Consistency and patience are required. Owners need to know they like to herd their people, be under your feet and stick to you like velcro. This can be corrected, but pushing, kicking or yelling are not acceptable forms of correction. I could tell a previous owner had done just that and the first task was to gain his trust that I wasn't going to harm him if I got frustrated. He needed to understand my love and authority was consistent & unconditional. There were unconditional boundaries, too. BC's are BRILLIANT, and they will notice every inconsistency..so you need to be an attentive, consistent authority. Throwing them in the back yard to get exercise won't be enough.. you have to be an active participant in the exercise. So much more.. BC's are my favorite breed hands down.

I have a 2 year old BC mix and a BC/Aussie. Pure chaos, especially since we have a TX Heeler.
Very quite, they can learn everything,so smart
What a great little doggo!!!❤❤❤
So helpful!!
Fabulous video by Carol, awsome trainor...
I guess there's no other way to do it though when you're fliming lol
absolutely right
Yeah spot on.
I say no, bad dog when he whines. I do not say his name as that's part of his reward when he does good. The most he whines is 5min and stops. I only corrected him a couple times.
Really good video. Will start training my Border collie asap.
I’m getting a border collie tommrow a few days before 8 weeks we have currently a Westie so it’s quite a different dog. I plan on training the puppy early on since we didn’t with our other dog this is a big help thank you ❤️
Wow! Thanks. That really helped.
Could have done with this a year ago - my bc is now 13 months - it’s been a long road 😂
Same, hard work!!
Long road for sure. lol But so worth it.
Just started with my pup
Just love them and keep working them. A tired dog is a happy dog.
Thank you for all the info! Cute pup and great training
Love you videos!!!
Fantastic video! I am bringing home my mini-Aussie boy on Saturday!
Oh that’s exciting, Susan! It’s the perfect time to watch or rewatch our “first week/first steps” puppy videos! Congratulations on your new pup. Happy Training! ~Ken
McCann Dog Training I have been binge watching them all since he was born! So grateful I found your channel! This training makes sense! Thank you!
Excellent, very clear
Excellent ... I could see the positive difference in this video! Well done!
I love these crates and wish they still made them! I have two, a medium and large, but would love to have one of this size for puppies. A great transition from an airline kennel to a soft-sided crate for young dogs. They fold up so nicely!
Border Collie and McCann! Family history says I have to! There is no better breed!
Good information, thank you.
This was so helpful!
Great video! Thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed our video, Jess! Thanks for watching ~Ken
Here’s a video that will be helpful to teach your dog to check back in with you: How To Teach Your Puppy To Leave It - ruclips.net/video/tDYzRgf3sOI/видео.html
Happy Training ~Ken
We have working border collies (cow dogs) and I wanted to see if there was any cool new tricks and this was a great video!
Great advise.
what treats is recommended ? , how long should these sessions last, how many treats are too much ?? great vid ..
