    This is really helpful. I just a nelly isler because the scent was so enchanting.

      Thanks - glad it was useful to you. I eventually lost the plant in the video - and I put it down to keeping it at 12°C for too long during winter. It's a genuine intermediate orchid and I'll try to remember that next time. They're OK at 12°C for a few weeks but 3 months of a UK winter is too long. I would feel safer at 15°C minimum. I must get another one as they're really lovely and the scent is fabulous! Good luck with yours!

    If I want to put a smile on my face I just read the winter weather report where my brothers and sister live. The nice thing about living in a temperate maritime climate is we don't have the weather extremes that a large land mass would have. I just stuck my Nelly Isler 'Orange' in the downstairs loo. It seems to be doing fine there. Stay safe.

      Yeah exactly. I moan about the persistent heavy cloud cover and lack of blue skies, but if we had hurricanes and tornadoes I'd have something to really worry about!🤷‍♂️

    I love these Nelly Islers. Despite our cold winters, they wouldn't survive my very hot summers. Thanks so much for the shout out! 😊
    It does blow my mind that it gets so cold here being further south. The summers are also brutal here, it can surpass 38 degrees celsius with 80-90% humidity. It's so awful when we get a heat wave. Spring and fall are ideal 😁
    I always admire your cool growers!

      My pleasure. It shows it's not always latitude that matters - that's just part of the story. I can cope with anything except persistent heavy cloud cover. It's just depressing. I'm happy with minus temperatures providing there's a blue sky. Hmmm, maybe not hurricanes. Or tornadoes.🤣

    Hi, going through ur previous vids , u introduced me to Mr Pilagoruim. Went to check him out and found him and his exhibition Pilagoruim plants so interesting and has made me want to turn my Pilagoruim looking somewhat like his. Now I'm wondering if u know any other tubers who do exhibition Flowering Begonias or mum plants. It's so interesting to watch people who do plant shows to see how much love they show toward their hobby. Cheers.

      I don't really know of anyone else. Once you start making and editing RUclips videos, times just kind of flies out of the window, and I rarely watch anyone on RUclips these days. Glad you're enjoying David's videos. I love Pelargoniums and would like a few more over the season.

    "Fudge... I command you to leave the glove" 😂😂😂 Such a cute dog and obviously great at moving things around for you 😁.
    I'm sure the repot will rejuvenate and it'll be looking healthy again soon.... Good luck 😊.
    I find the cold /cool /intermediate /warm growing advice flipping confusing sometimes! I too have had supposedly cool growers that have gone too cold with the same sort of affect on the leaves 😢.
    Maybe that would be a great topic to do an epic video on lol... Temperatures and how care instructions are all very well but it does depend on environment big time!
    I have orchids that say cool to warm growing! Well that's really helpful isn't it lol. Apparently it means that in the wild they're found growing both in cool and warm places so you'd think intermediate would be a good balance but even that doesn't work sometimes!
    So... Please feel free to clear up this confusion and make a video on the subject 😁.
    Great stuff Geoff and keep those videos coming whatever topic you choose.... But choose mine please 😂😂

      He's certainly a handful! Everyone says 'just train him' but he doesn't appear to be easy to train! Either that or we've just no idea what we're doing - which is highly probably seeing he's our first ever pet. And would you believe that even after a few days the Nelly Isler has started producing new growth - so very definitely the cold that was the issue. The thing about the advice on temps is that there are so many factors that affect it. For example, 12°C in a humid environment is very different to the same temp in a dry environment. Likewise at higher temps. And the temp. differential between day and night can also be an important factor, as can the amount of actual sunlight you get during the day, which we all know is practically zero over here. I get people from tropical climates telling me it'll be fine at 12°C as it does OK for them when temps drop, but they're getting similar day/night lengths, far more clear skies than we do and even though the temp might drop to that occasionally, it's not for 4 flippin' months solid! Maybe a ranty video is long overdue?!🤣

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Ooooooo yes, I love a good ranty video... DO IT 😂😂.
      I quite agree that combinations of temps, humidity, day length, sun height /intensity, microclimates and good old rubbish UK weather etc are a flipping minefield to navigate!
      I've a Brassia Aurantiaca.... A teeny plant that I've had for ages! It was actually 2 plants in the pot so each bit is even teenier! I've had them both in different conditions in my house and can I get them to grow.... No!! They're very much alive but doing absolutely nothing no matter what I do! They've been in my care since June 2020 and I'm lucky if they've grown 2 mm lol!
      I've seen your video on your lovely plant and I'm years, possibly decades off that size lol. Only thing I haven't tried is moving to a warmer room so one of them will be moved like it or not lol. I'm hoping that it's the "cool" growing part that is wrong for me too here and an intermediate temp boost will kick it into doing something!
      It's amazing that your nelly Isler has put on new growth so quickly.... Wow!! It just goes to show doesn't it! I also love the husk... Apart from the washing it off!! I'm being cautious with it but so far my experiments are doing well 😊.
      As for the lovely Fudge, I've had dogs all my life from puppies... Not now unfortunately as I rent and pets not allowed 😢 but they are flipping hard work. Repetition until you're sick of the sound of your own voice lol is the key.... Coupled with reward for good behaviour and ignoring the bad (very hard I know!) You'll get there in the end though and have a fully trained dog I'm sure 😊.
      Oh my goodness... Another essay from me lol... Hope you put your feet up and chilled out for half an hour reading it 😂😂.

      @@maxineevans9179 I've pretty much given up on all the orchids that aren't flowering size. I'd rather use the space for one that at least has half a chance - they're tricky enough as it is in our country. On Fudge - we got 2 bells so he could ring them when he wants to go outside. So for 3 months we've all been faithfully ringing them, he just ignores them and walks past! 🤷‍♂️ 🤣

    Ooooh, we are having that weather here in the US. The 'Polar Vortex" has come down for a visit, has not been above 0c for a week. The high temps are running -7, -6 with lows -15,-14. The electric bill came, it's a doozy:(
    Looks like at least another week of cold with random waves of snow, brrrrr!
    Fudge is adorable, teach him to bring you your gloves ;)
    By any chance, did you use a systemic fungicide on Nelly?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад

      Crikey you’re worse off than we are! Those are some low temperatures. 🥶 End no I’ve not use anything on the Nelly. I’ve been very frugal with chemicals this last year. It helps of course that it hasn’t had any bugs on it! 😂 We’ve some higher temperatures next week but alas that inevitably means heavy cloud cover and rain. 🌧🌧🌧

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Aaand the forecast got worse :0 5-7 or 7-12 inches of snow and colder, yippee!
      The reason I asked about systemic fungicides is that the 2 you have available, tebuconazole and triticonazole, are notorious for causing phytotoxicity. The Azole group of fungicides are sterol inhibitors. Even if you used them a year ago the plant may still be trying to grow out of the chemical. Nelly and Cinnamon Twinkle have that 'look'.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад +1

      @Lora Poynter Yeah I suppose that's definitely possible. I've seen enough mutations on my plants to know the side effects are real. It's the same old story of there being several possible causes and it coming down to trial error to detect which one. My nelly isler definitely bounced back last year once it was brought into the warm. If it does the same this year then I think that probably clinches the diagnosis. The twinkle was growing in a very hard, crusty clump of moss. But then again, it could be the chemicals that are making them less resilient to these hardships. 🤷‍♂️ You should see the state of one of my Cyclamen after spraying it to rid myself of cyclamen mite. It'll bloom, but they're so mutated as to be almost grotesque! Where do you live for it to get so cold?

    "they do need at least a couple months rest"
    The hybrids never rest in Florida and they bloom every spring. Putting them in dormancy is only really necessary if you want them to bloom at a specific time that isn't their natural time (forcing them to go dormant here requires a bit more work because you have to put them in the fridge, just cutting off water doesn't do anything). Since they never rest here, they do tend to produce off bulbs more readily which mature more quickly.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад

      That’s interesting. I can only speak from my own experience here in that both my Hippeastrum bulbs very definitely didn’t bloom when I just left them for over a year. They continued growing three foot long leaves but there was no sign of flower spikes. I mentioned it to Rachel (Gardening at Douentza) and she suggested forcing a dormancy as that’s what she does. I did and it worked. I’ve carried out that method for two years now and it’s worked like a dream. Rachel’s climate is identical to mine so perhaps that’s something to do with it. I suppose the takeaway here is do whatever works for you! For me though, I’m always happy to tuck them away for a couple of months and make use of the giant space they leave behind.

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 3 года назад +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Always do what works for you! I'm guessing the shortened and cooler days in your climate has something to do with them needing the dormant period to bloom. I don't really have to worry about the space they take up, they're lined up in pots outside in an area where I can't plant anything in the ground so they just do their thing. Sometimes I feed them, sometimes I water them, but I mostly ignore them until they bloom. The blooms don't last long here, about a week and they're toast, so I pray for two spikes spaced just enough apart to keep them in bloom a bit longer.
