I came to live in Toronto in April 1986 and OH how i miss Yonge Street when it was like this! The open arcades were up and down the street and it was an incredible time for a young man just starting out and coming from the country side.
It is ironic how we have to turn to the "internet" to view the past and then wish we could turn the clock back and return when there was no such thing as the "internet".
1:14 the gull is long gone, but he lived at the right time... so many great memories of Toronto back then as a kid, best time to experience it back then. Today it seems like everyone is watching their screens, hard pass for me. Would do anything to go back in time to those days.
Not gonna lie, this shit choked me up, but i didn't cry. Mama didn't raise no bitch! Super 8, was like 280p quality. HUGE thumbs up for uploading this, you're a legend!
I spent all my summer holidays in Canada, London Ontario to be precise, however 1986 I spent the entire year there and experienced all the seasons, spending, half of 86 though I spent in Toronto and what a place back then so I can't imagine what it is like now,
@@D33Lux really....that is a great shame, i know as you get older & wiser you start to see more of the not so nice side of life, but thought Toronto would hold onto some pleasantness
To really get to know downtown T.O. you gotta live there ... see it, breathe it, smell it, feel it. Worked at the TD Centre in the 80s ... had a condo at Yonge & College. Now that was fun!
I hear ya. lol I'm not laughing at you, it just reminded me of Al Bundy from Married with Children. Great show. I picked a bad time to quit drinking and smoking cigars :-(
Anyone remember the two dudes playing Neil Young songs just south of Wellesley on the east side of yonge in a lower alcove entrance to a bar? Those were the days. I was 18 and worked in the atrium on bay in a grocery store there
Great archive. Though @ 9:43 I read somewhere that when monkeys are confined in a small space for a long duration they have mental health issues and it's displayed by a rocking back and forth motion just like what this elephant is doing. Not sure if this is the same. But I presume the space need for a elephant would be enormous that no zoo can ever provide.
True, prisoners experience the same thing, they end up pacing in their cells. Most end up doing pushups or take up hobbies to distract from the wasted time.
It's funny people who lived in the 1950's said the same thing about Toronto in 1986. People will keep saying the same over and over again for decades about Toronto.
@@thefozzybear You're right. I went to Ryerson in the late '90s and I miss even the charm the downtown had even just back then. But for real, the Toronto of 25 years ago wasn't so so much different than the Toronto of 50 years ago. Now, it's completely different. Crazy expensive and packed with glass and concrete condos.
Hi, is there any way to get a hold of this footage? I'm a web series creator making a comedy set in 1980s Toronto and am looking for archival to use in the show!
@@kenlompart9905 Instead of being a hostile little brat why don't you set down your xbox and forget the meth for awhile and go out, get some fresh air and calm down a bit. Sounds like you need a hug!
Thank you for sharing a timeless piece of memory. The 80s was an extraordinary decade! To be young again in that time would be priceless!
The golden age of Ontario, thanks for posting .
I was 22 in 1986. Ahhhh, to be 22 again. Had so much energy and ambition.
So you're 58?
I was 26!
I was in my prime when I lived in Toronto in the 1980s. I had "so much energy" - and my sex drive was so much HIGHER!

She played Linda Hamilton's, (Sarah Connor's) room mate, Ginger in The Terminator. She was a hot one.
Bess Motta.
Toronto in the Commodore-64 era. A great summer to turn thirteen years old.

I was 15 when this was shot. So many memories of Toronto. Thanks for posting.
Likewise: it was an incredible time to be a teenager, and Toronto was so safe, clean, and vibrant.
Toronto The Good!
Back when it was safe to ride your bicycle from Mississauga to downtown as a kid.
Still is

Nostalgia is powerful
Crying is fine, it's in you for a reason.
Holding it back, ehh, not so much.
When Mama passes away, you're not gonna cry?
Thanks for the memories

Not the same at all, just keep those good memory's close to your heart, because all that of what you remember is long gone.

Good old days gone forever.
Always liked Harvey's burgers

The head shops and arcades AND most of all, the Record stores!!

Where are all the people and cars??? Today its bumper to bumper people and cars everywhere you go.
The infrastructure was and still is not set up to support the mass intake of immigration and constant flow of vehicles.
2:41 I remember I used to always see the Good Year blimp.
Molson Fleet Street still there. Going to 5:47 in 1 hour. Heh. I remember the Lancaster at 7:55.
Toronto, and canada isnt the same w justin running the show
This is 1986 but filmed with an 1960s camera
Yes, camcorders were the device of Choice by 1986 I didn't realize they were still making Super 8 movie film then.
This is the Toronto I know. I don't like the Toronto of 2019. It doesn't feel like home to me.

Why Is There No Sound
Different film and camera were needed that were quite expensive.
