  • Cocaine use is at a record high in Europe. The continent’s craving for the drug has created extreme wealth for criminal gangs and cartels. But there are also devastating consequences. Violence, homicides, corruption. In Latin America, Ecuador has become a hotspot. The whole region has been dragged knee-deep into the dirty drug game. And Europe itself is now experiencing the dark side of the illegal drug trade.

I love the way this European documentary skips over the part in between indigenous use of coca leaves in South America and the growth of the cocaine trade. Cocaine is a European drug. It was first isolated in 1855 in Germany by a German chemist. People in South America had been chewing coca leaves for over a thousand years with no health or social problems, but back then Europeans felt they had the right to meddle with any other part of the world, with predictable results. That's why we have a cocaine crisis.

Now the surprise on my cousin's face a few years back is no longer as surprising to me as it was back then... He was surprised that I was really not using any drugs or knew anything about them (names, how they look like etc.) which I thought was a weird thing to be surprised about.
From such reports I get the feeling that I'm really the odd one out (with even teasing people that they are drug users because they drink coffee).
