Hand size doesn't really matter if we are being 100% honest. It's more about the dexterity and strength that grows after a time of contorting your hand in ways the are similar to/benefit guitar playing.

Omg, I was about to jimi Hendrix smash and burn this guitar until I saw this video lol!!! I could not get my fingers to work the fretboard right. My pinky and ring finger would not work. I put my elbow in like you said, used the side of my fingers....I was just holding it wrong. Now we rolling lol. Thank you sooo much and God bless your beautiful heart.

It is physically impossible to bend and twist your fingers and wrist that way. My arm is would have to press beyond my rib cadge and my wrist and fingers would need joints on a swivel for this to work. Also I need to see her guitar from her POV otherwise everything is backwards. She uses a c chord try that with an Em and see what happens. First finger can’t make it past the B

    1:32 MIND BLOWN!!!
I’ve been learning guitar for a couple years now (after playing drums since I was a kid). In my 40’s, it has been painful lately. Changing my left hand to be rolled over like this might be life-changing.
This should be required watching for people with small hands. I have short / stubby hands. Forget three note per string scales, etc.
Some of the best advice I keep hearing is to play to your personal strengths. Your advice is helping me gain control of my hands four fryes at a time :)
Four frets are a time, but having the agility / knowledge to move around the fretboard is how I’ll compensate for being born with short fingers!

I've been having trouble with the pads on the inside end of my fingers dampening the string next to the one I'm pressing. Putting my fingers in this more natural configuration also helps to solve that problem.

Ian Simpson thanks! Not my idea though. This was taught to me by my classical guitar teacher. I had already played for many years without knowing this, but it made things much easier. I think a lot of folks say tips of fingers to help us make room for neighboring strings to ring. Maybe it’s more like sides of tips of fingers. Ha ha. ... But definitely sometimes not tips. My classical guitar teacher also steered me away from feeling like I always have to be on tippy tips in other situations too. Sometimes you just slap it down there the easiest way you can as long as your getting everything you need to ring. It just depends on what you’re playing.

I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of what the process will be like, and I often think about encouraging my student's to do this, but that just hasn't reached the top of the list yet. You're doing very well. Many people at this point don't like the sound of their chords, or are having trouble with rhythm, but you're doing great! I'm glad you are practicing with recordings. @@janetbrockman3729 Yes you're 100% right... people's expectations tend to be either wildly overestimated (thinking you can be playing really well within a matter of weeks or months) or underestimated (thinking it's as good as impossible to ever learn)... it's also difficult to see the gradual progress that's been made without visually looking back at a previous version.

Although this is now an older video, thank you for the useful tips! I play guitar for about a month now and this helps. However, it makes a huge difference if like yourself have long fingers. The fact that you can reach these chords on a dreadnought with such ease says enough! I have to use a smaller guitar with shorter scale, like a mini jumbo or Parlor. And use proper fretting like you show here. Then it's going ok for more tricky to reach chords.

One thing I wish I'd learned early on: Don't look at those huge "cowboy chord" diagrams and think you have to play all 5 or 6 strings. Just select the notes you need; in most cases 3 or 4 strings will do, and will sound a lot cleaner.

Thank you I was struggling with this and had arranged for my finger tendons to be cut and shorted to bend the last finger joint. Thanks to you I have cancelled the operation.
