How to make your fingers reach chord shapes on the guitar
Less than 2 minutes into this video and you pointed out the major flaw in how us beginners get it wrong! I'm getting my guitar out right now to practice this! Thank you!
U kidding me 😂 I was advised by some other guitarist to always uses the tips of my fingers when playing u telling me using the sides was the correct way no wonder I couldn’t stretch them where I wanted
Thanks that will help me guide beginner I play with.
So wish I'd seen this video a year ago... before I gave up! Lol
I have written lots of songs without ever using b minor.
Damn it...why didnt someone teach me this ? I spent hours trying to spread my fingers.
I’m learning how to know what different cords are in playing my guitar
absolutely genius omg
My goodness...thank you... I was really struggling with this and now it's easy.
Not to many people talk about thumb position - whats your advise for thumb position?
Thank you! I was starting to intuitively understand that. But this really helped :)
Slack doesn't exist in a serious disciplined artform.
I'm waiting for the comments. Watch. I'll prove my point.
I SAW ON RUclips WHERE ONE GUITAR INSTRUCTOR SAID YOU CAN STICK YOUR ELBOW OUT WHILE FRETTING ON THE LOWER FRETS. I FOUND THAT TO BE A LOT UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE THE FOCUS WAS ON SPREADING THE FINGERS TO REACH OTHER FRETS VERSUS JUST ALLOWING THE HAND TO REST NATURALLY ON THE NECK.
This technique allows you to quit jamming your thumb into the guitar. This technique allows you use your thumb as a rest stop. THIS REDUCES SO MUCH TENSION AS YOU FOLLOW THE NATURAL USE OF YOUR FINGERS, HAND, ARM, AND SHOULDER.
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE I NOTICE THAT SHE IS KEEPING HER FINGERS ALIGNED WITH HER WRIST WHICH ALLOWS HER TO KEEP HER ELBOW IN SND HER SHOULDERS RELAXED FROM TENSION.👈🏿👍🏾
Thank you for your help!
I only started learning how to play guitar about a little over a month ago & I'm documenting my entire journey on here yet 8 years later this video is still super helpful...certainly helping me!
Ah! I'm so glad you found me! And I'm glad I found you! I love that you are documenting your process. That is so valuable for many people. I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of what the process will be like, and I often think about encouraging my student's to do this, but that just hasn't reached the top of the list yet. You're doing very well. Many people at this point don't like the sound of their chords, or are having trouble with rhythm, but you're doing great! I'm glad you are practicing with recordings. That's great for your sense of rhythm. The thing is...this is my old channel...I have lots more on my new channel. Here's a link to get you there: ruclips.net/p/PLpQLlt0LhKj_bscZ66OBluubh35pXuVep&si=3ZsAo97rO3uhrwVd Then look at my other playlists to see if you find anything else helpful. I have subscribed and will like everyone of your videos. I'll share your channel too.😉👍
@@janetbrockman3729 Yes you're 100% right... people's expectations tend to be either wildly overestimated (thinking you can be playing really well within a matter of weeks or months) or underestimated (thinking it's as good as impossible to ever learn)... it's also difficult to see the gradual progress that's been made without visually looking back at a previous version. Thanks for the hook up with your new channel! I'll check it our for sure... you have a fantastic way of explaining & demonstrating things. Much appreciated!!
yes but you have slender fingers...mine are kinda fat so I don't think it will work but i shall try
wow Janet..... thanks so much...... I have been struggling with the very issue you addressed in this video..... I guess RUclips knew I needed your video. :)
this is one small detail that would've helped me a lot 3 years ago
I’m so glad you’re here! There’s a lot more on my new channel: ruclips.net/p/PLpQLlt0LhKj-onOs_Rdzu95jYo5KBAFrN
You have long fingers. How do you do it when you have small hands and short fingers?
As a complete beginner I have been trying frustratingly for ages to do the A major, cramming my fingers together, this sage advice has literally worked for me instantly. thank you ! Ill definitely be trying this technique out with other chords.
Yay! Please find my new channel. Here’s a link to my newest playlist. ruclips.net/p/PLpQLlt0LhKj-onOs_Rdzu95jYo5KBAFrN and while you’re there also look for “How to reach chord shapes on guitar”
I’ve tried for weeks now and can’t get even close. My third finger and index cannot get more than 1 and half frets apart. I have very long arms but short stubby fingers. So the only way I can get my arm in enough to my body to do that angle means I can my even see my fingers as I’m holding the guitar away. from my body. The only way I can do it is if I put the guitar on my other knee but then I can’t strum properly?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow that helped alot 😊
Everything you've mentioned at the begginning is opposite of every guitar teacher I've ever known or had as an instructor.
Thank you for sharing
Thank you Janet for sharing your knowledge and making playing more accessable and fun.
This is so good, I can't understand why so many teachers on RUclips teach it wrong. It was causing me pain in the wrist. Your method is so comfortable and makes sense., Thank you !
Yet again another great video and explanation
Thank you for pointing the very basic.. so very helpful..❤
Are you still teaching? I know a few people which could benefit by taking lessons from you
Wonderful

After 20 years I came to this very conclusion on my own. This info is 100% spot on thank you!
I think you just led me to a breakthrough! ❤️ The c chord!!!
Got any tips for a minor seven drop two chord on the middle string set?
I've been playing for many years, but this one little point of how the side of the finger bearing on the fretboard relates to keeping the elbow close to the body is an excellent bit of taijutsu for fluidity and efficacy. Thank you !!!
This is very helpful Janet. My students need this tip.
Thank you so much, great lesson by the way, you’re very cute
That's helpful thanks
yay!
Please find my new channel: lots more there! There's a link in the description un der this video.
Although this is now an older video, thank you for the useful tips! I play guitar for about a month now and this helps. However, it makes a huge difference if like yourself have long fingers. The fact that you can reach these chords on a dreadnought with such ease says enough! I have to use a smaller guitar with shorter scale, like a mini jumbo or Parlor. And use proper fretting like you show here. Then it's going ok for more tricky to reach chords.
I believe you're a very attractive woman Miss Drew. Calm and compose. Thanks
Until I see it for myself, I refuse to believe that anyone can learn to play guitar. I tried for 5 years and made zero progress.
Awe. The problem is usually the teacher. Really. Do you still have a strong desire?
@@janetbrockman3729 Whenever I asked for help, the only responses I got were to either keep doing what I was already doing (even though what I was doing wasn’t working), or to quit. At this point, I don’t have the desire to do something that I’ll never get any better at. Since nobody seems willing to help me, I don’t see the point in trying
@@janetbrockman3729 Do you think it’s worth it for me to try again given that I have no talent whatsoever?
Yes, I do! I don’t believe in the no talent thing. Everyone is born with the ability to learn to play music just like everyone is born with the ability to speak. The problem is that our society has evolved in such a way that most music instruction is not designed to provide basic beginner level development, so folks who happen to get that in childhood appear to be “talented” and others appear to “not have what it takes” but you can develop those basic skills with proper instruction. If you are interested, go to my website and email me and we can continue the discussion. I will not try to make a sale. I’ll just try to help you if you want to try again. You can get some idea of my philosophy by poking around my website: www.everyonecanjam.com

Sorry To Blue....Your right...this is a very old video on an old channel that is almost dormant. I need to take this video down. I hope you find my new channel (Janet Brockman) where there are lots of very helpful videos. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/OhFr2nb1Zfw/видео.html. Already sensing Janet is a real teacher rather than somebody looking for hits, already benefited, guitar can be very frustrating & difficult.
Very nice tips on the position of the fingertips and the elbow tips... Thanks!
Words of wisdom
Very nice comment. 😍
Great info Thank you
it's so weird that all these teachers teach the opposite way, getting that thumb behind the middle finger and spread out and i learned 50 years ago on an angle.
