Your description of the plot makes the film seems so much more coherent and exciting than it really is. There are small details you describe (like Peter's addiction to the suit) that just dont come across clearly enough to have any impact. I've seen it several times and always felt that it has a lot of great scenes and moments in it - when taken individually - but somehow, when seen all together it just doesnt gel. Personally, I've always felt the MJ stuff to be the weakest part of the movie and unfortunately this where the focus lies most of the time. Dunst was likable in the first two films and did not detract from the main story - but here she is shrill and bitchy and her personal problems just arent very compelling and drag the film down. I know the intent was Peter's insensitive and selfish actions (from the influence of the black suit) are creating the problems between the two - but again, its not clearly depicted, and you feel more sorry for Peter than anything. Clearly, in order to have Dunst return, her contract must have been renegotiated to include more screen time and this was their solution.
The intro to the Sandman is one of the best intros to a character ever. So tragic yet amazing, then the dark theme at the end when he’s walking towards the camera. Awesome.
Excellent video. The novelization of the movie has a lot of the cut scenes with sandman and the extra characters. They filmed those things too but didn't put it in the editors cut. A leaked trailer from Ant Farm Trailer House shows some of those scenes. You have to complete The Dark Knight trilogy next.
I adore Spiderman 3. Time just goes so fast, man. Already about twenty years since it came out. I love Harry's arc, I love the metal pipe scene in the high rise near the end, and just think 3 is fantastic.
Especially the editor's cut. It's a flawed movie but still a good one. Also it's my favourite one out of the trilogy in terms of its abundance of action scenes. Also, I love the themes of revenge, ego and forgiveness.
You can tell there is a good movie somewhere in there but it feels overstuffed with backstories & villans and could have been split into two films. If they would have kept the black suit, harry osborn back story, and maybe keep the Sandman as the main villan while saving Venom for Spiderman 4 could have made sense.
3 was just too different from 1 and 2 in too many ways, from music, cinematography to character motivations. Just jarringly different. Like the difference between chamber of secrets and azkaban different.
The Harry Potter series getting darker made sense since the kids were growing up, Harry's perception of his family was shaken through Sirius and there was a lot more personal secrets and revelations going around. Plus if the series had the tone of the first two films, Voldermort's return wouldn't have worked well.
You find the look of Spider-Man 3 to be jarring but not Spider-Man 2? Spider-Man 2 looks like a film that came out six years after Spider-Man 1. Spider-Man 3 looks similar to Spider-Man 2.
YESS! I've been waiting for this video for such a long time. I hope we get these retrospectives for every Spider-Man film thus far (including TASM and MCU films eventually). Also I haven't watched this film in a while so watching this video made me notice the name drop of "Ryker's." Neat detail that I never picked up on. I feel really bad for Christopher Young because I really love his scores! Also your montages throughout this video are absolutely fabulous!
Great work Oliver Harper . I always enjoyed Spider-Man 3 very much. Yes it has flaws but still it has decent plot, perfect cast, amazing cgi and also it was a big part of my childhood, which makes me nostalgic about it I guess 😇😇
Apparently the end battle was RADICALLY different where in when Peter shoots the web to free Eddie from Venom, instead what Pete pulls out was a Venom like Skull that speaks to Peter saying "It never wanted me, it wanted u! It always wanted u" Peter then turns as a voice says "Never wound what u can't Kill!" And that was the actual final battle Peter trying to fight Venom, whose was trying to more violently and viciously bond with Spider-Man again
This was definitely a sequel that got better with time. The Spider-hype kicked into overdrive after Spider-Man 2 was such a huge success. It made the third one seem lame by comparison. Now, it feels like a greater achievement than it was initially given credit for.
Great job as usual! I agree, I love the score. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the entire film. I had been looking forward to this film and was disappointed much like everyone else. What is next for you? The dark Knight? Thanks for all that you do! Keep up the great work!
I love all 3 of Sam Raimi's Spiderman. The darker tone of the 3rd one felt right as it explored aspects of Spiderman's personality that had only been played out in the comic books up until that time.
The two first films were amazing. Spider-Man 2 being a masterpiece. This film just couldn’t measure up. It should’ve been about venom only. It’s still a charming good film. Toby McGuire was a great Peter Parker. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Way too many characters in one film. The Gwen Stacy story could’ve been Spider-Man 4 with Harry Osborne getting his revenge
The editor cut certainly helps though not a whole lot. I still felt I like I was watching the same film but it did cut some controversial scenes and added a few new scenes that were substantial. Overall I still enjoy this film in-spite of its flaws.
The FX artist behind the sandman used to circulate his development video for the shaders in late 2000s. It was some bananas shit. Incredible how much thought went into it.
I got to meet Cliff Robertson when he came to visit his old college in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He went out to eat at the local fine dining restaurant where I was maitre de in 2008. He was incredibly gracious but also very frail and feeble at the time. I remember his eyes were watery and he needed to sit down immediately. Such a nice man and a great actor. The camera took off at least a decade off of him in those films. RIP Cliff.
This movie still has more soul and charm than any other non Raimi spiderman movie. The Raimi trilogy just hit different than any other superhero movie. They embrace the goofiness and camp of the comics fully all while having fantastic character moments that aren't interrupted by terrible jokes or forced awkward stuff.
Personally it is my favorite in the trilogy. I always watched it when I was little kid. The first Spider-Man movie that I ever saw. Thank you Oliver for doing this review. I really love this movie.
I went to see this and 28 Weeks Later at the cinema alone during 2007, noone wanted to come... But when I look back at the latter movie, being alone in the cinema during that opening sequence was one of the best cinema experiences of my life.
I loved this movie and thought it was great when it came out. It receives alot of hate but I think that for a third movie in a trilogy, it really did live up to the hype and delivered everything the fans wanted. This is coming from someone who used to be obsessed with collecting spiderman comics as a kid.
SPIDERMAN 3 really underrated and for me is favourite in the Trilogy. It shows Peter handing power and his dark side. Peter turns from superhero to anti-hero and back. Great way to close the ark. Also I love VENOM! Arrrrrh!!! 👹👹👹
Another excellent review, Oliver. I've always liked Spider-Man 3. It's got flaws, but I still liked it. I really wish Sam had just gone with the Vulture instead of being forced to use Venom. Maybe it would've been better. Eh. Who knows? Anyway, wonderful job as always, Oliver. Oh. And using the music from the 70's Spider-Man tv show while talking about the video game was great! I love that theme. It's a nice bit of 70's cheese.
Personally for me, I always enjoyed the design of the venom costume in the film because I've always thought of venom as a dark reflection of spiderman so I like that they put a distorted web pattern on him in this movie. Other than that, I don't think that Topher grace was a good choice for him and he did look kinda skinny
If they wanted Peter to have a personal vendetta against Sandman, they could have had him find out that Flint Marko was the guy who killed his parents.
This movie is nowhere near as bad as everybody says it is..cheesy, sure, but has a lot of heart. I'll take spider-man 3 over the safe and bland MCU spider-man films anyday.
Anyone interested in watching a better version of Spider-man 3, I recommend this fan edit cut. Link to watch it is in video's description. ruclips.net/video/UcfZaxF3P88/видео.html
I think Spiderman 3 is underrated. I've heard all the complaints that there were too many villians, but I don't think that's a problem at all. If anything, it strengthens the movie and gives it a truly epic feel. Spiderman will have to go up against not one but two villians and it does make you fear for him. It also forces Harry to bury the hatchet and help Peter, when he finds out the truth from his beloved Berhard, whatever his name is, the butler. It also makes the film very dark. As for the scene where MJ dances with harry, I think that's a lovely scene and quite sexy. It could even be a homage to what MJ is supposed to be in the comics, she loves to dance, she's not an actress. Honestly, Oliver, I love that bit!
I’ve always loved this movie when I was a kid and I still do today. I still love all three films equally. Tobey was my Spider-Man and is still my favorite. I still own that web blaster.
Wow I knew the basics of Spider-Man 3 but there was so much I hadn’t known. Like that’s why the official score never came out, I always wanted to buy it especially the opening. Like many other millennials this Spider-Man was my childhood, I’ll never get tired of the Rami trilogy. Forever saddened we never got Spider-Man 4, but have hope we may get to see Tobey as Peter one day. I remember how ecstatic I was watching this in theaters in May 2007, hyped ever since the first trailer came out and how into the marketing I was. Still has a lot of problems but this movie still holds a special place in my heart. Thanks Oliver, your retrospectives are some of the absolute bests!
You‘re right. The one and only problem in my opinion was the number of villains! Raimi should have left Venom out and totally focus on Sandman and the story between Peter and Harry. Enough stuff for 2+ hours. Everything in the last 30 minutes of this movie felt rush and quick! Too much storylines to finish in only one project. But finally all 3 Raimi-Spideys are worth watching!
1. John Jameson never brought back the symbiote in the comics. Spider-Man acquired the symbiote on an alien world and brought it back with him. In the comics John Jameson brought a sapphire like stone back with him from the moon and it turned him into the Man Wolf. Both these elements were combined for the 90s animated series. 2. The fact that this movie A, names Uncle Ben's killer and B, then changes who killed Uncle Ben was the worst. Uncle Ben's killer has forever been known as just "The Burglar" Even when he returned and died of a heart attack in ASM #200, his name was never revealed. 3. I actually liked Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. I never really liked the Eddie Brock character in the comics and thought a better character to become Venom would have been Daily Bugle photographer Lance Bannon. Bannon had years of history in the Spider-Man comics (where as Eddie Brock debuted in the first full Venom issue ASM #300) and was already an anti-Peter Parker type character. In fact Topher Grace's Eddie Brock is far more like Lance Bannon.
I think he's confusing the comic storyline with the 1994 animated series, where Jameson Jr DOES bring back the symbiote after Spiderman saves him from his crashing spacecraft (which Jameson purposely misinterprets as sabotage).
That Black suit theme is glorious and I love Sandman's awakening and the mansion fight scene. The film is still a mess. If we cut out the goofiness from the characters. I think I would appreciate it more. One thing I do love is the look of Venom in his tendril look.
I really do like this film. It is better then The Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2. And even though it's not like spiderman 2002 and spiderman 2004, it's something new because I wouldn't want it to feel the same really, although I kind of wished they saved Eddie Brock as Venom for a Spiderman 4 or even a Venom spinoff but without Topher Grace even I thought he did a good job of what he had to work with, I would rather have Tom Hardy, Vin Diesel, John Cena, or even the Rock as this version of Venom. but there was something about this I kind of wished that for the ending they had Spiderman have the Black Suit and made him sad and stressed and maybe even depressed from the deaths of Harry, MJ, and Aunt May, and with Gwen trying to cheer him up and stuff. Thats how they could have included Gwen Stacy into the film
I truly think Spider-Man 3 editors cut is the definitive cut to watch that movie. It’s so much better with the smallest changes to scene placements and music.
After watching ASM 1-2 only liking Gwen and peter's relationship together and the spider boy, iron man, iron spider whatever that was. I am growing to like Spiderman 3. Its on TV monthly and was on Netflix for awhile so i found myself watching it a lot more. I always said if a fan could do some editing and take out the cringe parts i bet this could be a fun movie. Topher Grace was popular at the time on that 70's show so im sure they picked him as another name to draw people to the movie. Too bad we didn't get the 4th movie it will always be a what could have been.
Peter does not fail to recognize that M.J. is having her own problems. His attempts to help her just fall hopelessly flat as she doesn't really want any advice, she just wants a shoulder to dry on. Peter has gotten so used to helping people solve their problems that he doesn't realize that sometimes [people just want a sympathetic ear and not helpful suggestions. M.J. doesn't really help as she is far too defensive when he tries to help and just makes everything worse.
I remember reading an article on this movie before it came on in the old Disney Adventure magazine. I had no intention to see it but as I read the article I could tell it would be a big mess. It said it would have 3 villains and it just seemed like too much for me. I guess I wasn't alone in that thought.
Oliver, I have an out of print Spider-Man 3 concept art book, the final third act is entirely different than the version we got. Like the video game based on the film, it involved Sandman's daughter being kidnapped by Venom, black mailing him to help him kill Spidey. A better way to go about the story rather than Sandman just willingly joining Venom when he claimed he wasn't a bad person. The book showcases these moments in photos that included Sandman's daughter on set. Despite the editor's cut that released a while ago with some new scenes , they probably have all this footage somewhere in the Sony lot that has no polished VFX at all. For whatever reason this entire third act was reshot, but the video game based on the film was criticized for being rushed and not completely polished which I speculate is the reason why the video game still had that plot point as opposed to the film.
I don't think the problem with the villains is that there are too many of them. Remember, Homecoming had 4 villains (5, if you want to count Mac Gargan's brief cameo) and Spider-Verse had 6. The problem was that they all tried to be equally important to the story, with equally big story-arcs. I like the elements of Sandman's story and THC's performance is great, but if he was merely, for example, Harry's henchman you would instantly have more room for the other plot-lines to breathe.
Sam Raimi’s effort on this film is commendable, overall the trilogy is timeless.
@bigevilworldwide Afraid I have to agree with this. I still like these movies but they are definitely products of the 2000s.

I'm pretty sure she was already contracted for three movies. Raimi wanted to focus more on Peter/MJ but the studios kept meddling.
Peter was insensitive and selfish even before the black suit. That was the point.
The intro to the Sandman is one of the best intros to a character ever. So tragic yet amazing, then the dark theme at the end when he’s walking towards the camera. Awesome.
I had no idea there was an editor's cut, its like the "spiderman 2.1" cut they made of spiderman 2 I guess
It did not fix the problems with SM3.
Robert Gross It’s certainly better than the 2.1 cut of Spiderman 2.
The emo peter bits were some of the best in the movie, fight me
Your retrospectives are still some of the very best videos on all of RUclips. Keep doing the damn thing Ollie! 😁
You can tell there is a good movie somewhere in there but it feels overstuffed with backstories & villans and could have been split into two films.
If they would have kept the black suit, harry osborn back story, and maybe keep the Sandman as the main villan while saving Venom for Spiderman 4 could have made sense.
Rami didn't want Venom, he wasn't a fan of the character. I think it would have been best to leave Venom out of it.
This! Drop Venom and maybe introduce Gwen Stacy but not “drop” her until a later film. Keep the black suit, keep Sandman, and wrap up Osborne plot.
3 was just too different from 1 and 2 in too many ways, from music, cinematography to character motivations. Just jarringly different. Like the difference between chamber of secrets and azkaban different.
I rather look at 3 as it's own thing
Great work Oliver Harper
Did not expect to see this in my subscriptions today :)
Damn, Oliver’s edits can make anything look like a masterpiece
This was definitely a sequel that got better with time. The Spider-hype kicked into overdrive after Spider-Man 2 was such a huge success. It made the third one seem lame by comparison. Now, it feels like a greater achievement than it was initially given credit for.
For all its faults, I would definitely choose watch it over the two Amazing Spider-Man films any day.
Please do a Beverly Hills cop retrospective!!!!! I’m dying
Came back from a 10 hours shift at work. Thank you for cheering me up Mr Oliver
We need a proper director's cut of the movie
There are a couple of interesting fan cuts on the IFDB.

The Editor's Cut is the best we're going to get unfortunately. I just can't see Raimi going back to this film.
The dancing Peter scene is a masterpiece of cinema
The editor cut certainly helps though not a whole lot.
I still felt I like I was watching the same film but it did cut some controversial scenes and added a few new scenes that were substantial.
Overall I still enjoy this film in-spite of its flaws.
I remembered seeing this with my parents when it came out at 6. Including commercials for the toys on either Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
This is one, I can only imagine, would be fantastic with some obvious editing choices adjusted
I saw this in the theater when it came out. At the time, I wasn’t that into it. Now I love this movie.
I liked all the characters. I think they made it work and balanced it well.
Venom will always be my personal favorite Spider-man villain.
I went to see this and 28 Weeks Later at the cinema alone during 2007, noone wanted to come... But when I look back at the latter movie, being alone in the cinema during that opening sequence was one of the best cinema experiences of my life.
I hear that 1970’s Nicholas Hammond theme in the background.
You just got a new subscriber.
This movie deserves the full appreciation that it truly needs, especially after Homeless and Far From Good
I loved this movie and thought it was great when it came out. It receives alot of hate but I think that for a third movie in a trilogy, it really did live up to the hype and delivered everything the fans wanted. This is coming from someone who used to be obsessed with collecting spiderman comics as a kid.
Well it really wasn’t Sam Raimi’s fault for Venom because he wanted the vulture in the movie
Oh hello sr striker
Hey striker this movie was acthully the first ever time I ever heard of venomm
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 could you stop following me
@@srstriker6420 well I didn't know you were even here

SPIDERMAN 3 really underrated and for me is favourite in the Trilogy. It shows Peter handing power and his dark side. Peter turns from superhero to anti-hero and back. Great way to close the ark. Also I love VENOM! Arrrrrh!!! 👹👹👹
I remember seeing a teaser for this a year before it came out-that's how big a deal it was back in the day
Another excellent review, Oliver.
Also retconning Sandman into Uncle Ben's killer was a terrible decision.
If they wanted Peter to have a personal vendetta against Sandman, they could have had him find out that Flint Marko was the guy who killed his parents.
@@taopilot2669 I thought they should have had Harry put a bounty on Spider-Man's head and had Sandman try to collect on it.
This movie is nowhere near as bad as everybody says it is..cheesy, sure, but has a lot of heart.
I'll take spider-man 3 over the safe and bland MCU spider-man films anyday.
Nice work throwing musical cues in from the spider-man live action series.
Anyone interested in watching a better version of Spider-man 3, I recommend this fan edit cut. Link to watch it is in video's description.

Jameson being reminded to tAke his medication was hilarious.
Great opening ...you've even used the first trailer soundtrack ...cool
I personally hated the movie but right now I can Forgive it
Random Scottish Guy Exactly I respect the actors but I hate Sony
White Steve Harvey thank you mate I appreciate your forgiveness ✊🏻
It's not even a bad movie
@@Ecw_Kevin_Torres everyone hates sony
Forrest Gump I agree with you but the script was a mass
Thanks Oliver! Great video as always!
My favourite part of this movie? Emo Peter dancing.
Thats funny because thats the only thing that ruins this film
@@smokelife6315 Nah I've rather have the Cool Peter Parker Dance scenes over the Iron Boy Jr movie any single day
I’ve always loved this movie when I was a kid and I still do today. I still love all three films equally. Tobey was my Spider-Man and is still my favorite. I still own that web blaster.
The 70s theme really warmed my heart. Thank you.
Bruce Campbell as Mysterio!! That's the best thing we never got!
And Ben friggin Kingsly as friggin Vulture! Come on!
I thought this Eddie Brock was pretty lame, stole your girl? You were never dating her! Lol
That Black suit theme is glorious and I love Sandman's awakening and the mansion fight scene. The film is still a mess. If we cut out the goofiness from the characters. I think I would appreciate it more. One thing I do love is the look of Venom in his tendril look.
Director delivers two awesome and successful films.
Producer: no, you got it wrong. Do this!
Excellent work per usual, Mr. Harper.
70s live action spiderman theme. Nice use! 23:00
Love hearing the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man theme in this review.
I truly think Spider-Man 3 editors cut is the definitive cut to watch that movie. It’s so much better with the smallest changes to scene placements and music.
I love this movie, it has some issues in continuity and some story decisions, but it is better than most people consider it to be.
Love the Streets of Rage music in the credits!!!
Ah yes, the Citizen Kane of this century.
lol 😆 or police academy 5 ... opinions vary .
When you mentioned that many critics didn't like this film my first thought was "BUT THE MEMES IT GAVE US ARE AMAZING!"
I would love Oliver to do Dead Man's Shoes
I don't think the problem with the villains is that there are too many of them. Remember, Homecoming had 4 villains (5, if you want to count Mac Gargan's brief cameo) and Spider-Verse had 6. The problem was that they all tried to be equally important to the story, with equally big story-arcs. I like the elements of Sandman's story and THC's performance is great, but if he was merely, for example, Harry's henchman you would instantly have more room for the other plot-lines to breathe.
