In “An Affair To Remember” (1957) two lovable characters, portrayed by Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr fall in love with each other during a cruise. While they both want to take their time to get things done for a live together, they want to meet up six months later at the Empire State Building. While Grant’s character is waiting for Kerr’s, who is racing to join him, fate intervenes, resulting in misunderstanding and heartbreak where only destiny can save them… While “Affair” inspired the famously known “Sleepless In Seattle” (1993), it surely is one of the most enjoyable and heartwarming movies about love you will ever get to see, with Grand and Kerr being the cherry on the cake. The music of the movie, heavily based on the song of the same name, written by Harry Warren (heard in the opening, sung by Vic Damone) and lyrics by Harold Adamson and Leo McCarey (the picture’s director), which becomes the motif for love and destiny was wonderfully adapted into the score by the beloved Hugo Friedhofer, who also composed the charming source cues like “Pink Champagne”. Enjoy this bit of warmth during the cold season of the year!
I wonder why this particular CD soundtrack isn't in stereo, since the film features a CinemaScope 4-channel soundtrack mix - too bad. I noticed the same problem on the otherwise excellent Friedhofer score CD for THE SUN ALSO RISES.
Why is this soundtrack soooo beautiful? OMG! I heard the instrumental version of this movie's theme song in the movie SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE and I started to cry. Thank you for bringing me so much joy tonight with this upload.
No line really, sleepless in Seattle. Meg and sdy I believe, it's been ages. But one of my faves. The sincerity of real cinema, depicting what true love should or could be like. Great movie. Well if we gonna go there, let's no doubt this thing, and End it on This.... Meaning, City Of Angels, violin playing. Is that not or not one of thee greatest of all times? Sheesh, gotta knock out. But thanks for your response. Just made me drift for a tic, but I'm back to life. Back to reality, toodles
An unseen but heard reunion here: once again - as in 'The king and I" - it is Marni Nixon dubbing the vocals for Deborah Kerr. Thanks so much, Fred, for posting this.
Fantastic film, lovely music and lyrics with lush strings that sometimes bring me to the point of tears. I am a sap! Wasn't this film a shot-for-shot remake of an earlier film called Love Affair? Deborah Kerr was golden. What a happy discovery on a Friday Morning! Absolutely a wonderful suite, Fred.
Yes it was a remake of a film called Love Affair 1939 starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer and directed by Leo McCarey wh0 directed the Grant/Kerr movie. There was another remake in 1994 with the same title as the 1939 movie. It starred Warren Beatty and Anette Bening (they were married in real life).Have seen all 3 versions and the Grant/Kerr version remains my favourite.
Fun fact: I know this film, and this score, through its heavy association with one of my other favourites, Sleepless In Seattle (the 90s romcom with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan). The story of Affair To Remember is woven throughout, as the score is woven into that of Sleepless. I now like to watch the two back to back on New Year's Eve for some weird reason. They make a perfect pair!

Why isn't Vic Damone credited with singing the opening of Our Love Affair?
Hugo Friedhofer ended up doing some TV work in the 1960s, including one episode of The FBI and some episodes of I Spy.
