Thank you so much for this video. It’s too bad I didn’t see this sooner. I live above a business and so I can’t really say I had a place to grow the garlic. However I did plant 10 toes last fall. I dug them up just a few days ago. The bulbs are a good size. But I had no place to store them to dry them. I tried to do it outside by hanging them on a support for tomatoes but the wind would blow it over…. And the length of the stems created a real issue so I asked a few questions and people said that you could cut them so that was what I did. The smell of garlic was very strong in the stem and I knew that they probably should have remained to continue the curing process of the bulb. But it was too late. My shed is not ventilated and gets extremely hot. So that was not going to work. But I do have 10 healthy looking garlic bulbs. Maybe next year I’ll be able to do the right thing and curing it. Thankyou

In which direction do you hang the bulbs? How long do they hang for? Do you ever cut the roots or stems? What about the soft neck garlic? I'm about to harvest my first crop, all hard necks. I checked one two weeks ago. It seemed quite small.

Hi Aileen! The bulbs should be at the bottom when hanging. The timing can vary and you'll know they are dry when the stalks are completely dry and brown. I'd say at least two weeks. At that time, the roots and stalks will be trimmed -- I will be posting a video about that process too! If your stalks look like the ones in the video, they are likely ready to pull. Your bulb size can depend on the size of the original clove you planted plus other factors like soil nutrients. A garlic planting video is forthcoming too in October. And I've only ever grown hardneck varieties which are most successful in colder climates. You can find more tips here: innisfilseedlibrary.ca/growgarlicathome

@@MindfulGardening thanks! I harvested them but trimmed the roots and stems already...some were ready others were not. I will know for next year not to harvest when the stem is still green but I'm sure they'll be fine - going to pickle the ones that weren't quite ready.

The stalks will still be mostly green with browning at the bottom near the bulb when you pull them. By hanging them to dry, stalks and all, you're helping to dry the papery covering around the bulb and each clove which helps cure them for longer storage. Something to consider next season! Gardening is an adventure :)

Hello. Just staring to harvest my first ever crop of garlic. When it comes to hanging, I don’t really have an indoor place to hang them. I do however have a three sided pole barn. They will be out of the bright sun being shaded by the roof. Is hanging them there an option?

I love garlic! I bought Georgian Fire last fall from Fat Rooster Garlic Farm in Victoria Harbour, ON. Excellent certified organic garlic.

Several years ago I tested the idea of whether removing scapes improves your garlic harvest. I grew about 100 bulbs and removed the scapes from 50 plants. When I harvested them, I kept them separate and compared the results. No, I didn't weigh each of them as small differences don't interest me. And I didn't notice any difference.
Perhaps, if I was a commercial growing a two or three percent increase in my product might make a difference. But for me, removing scapes is not worth even the small efforts. I will admit though, that if you use the scapes for other purposes, it might be a useful practice.
