It’s not that the protection layer didn’t form, it’s that you let too many of the leaves turn brown before you harvested. Each set of leaves is a layer of protection around the entire bulb. I usually let only the bottom three to four sets of leaves turn brown before pulling to cure. Otherwise you end up without the layers of protection like you saw.
The information I get from garlic farms when I bought seed garlic says that garlic should be harvested when the bottom 2-3 leaves die off, leaving several green leaves still on the plant. I always do that, and I get a nice fully wrapped bulb that lasts for a long time. Once in a while I have had a few plants turn completely brown, like many of yours have, and I had the same results, separated cloves with no wrapper that had to be used first. I live in an area that people say you can't grow hard neck garlic because it's too warm, and they won't form bulbs. I vernalize the seed garlic for 6 weeks in the refrigerator before planting in November and I get great bulbs, which are ready even earlier. This year my garlic scaped in April, and I harvested in May.
I am jealous. Last October I planted 16 garlic cloves. This was my first time really gardening past having a planter on a stairwell, so I didn't think to put netting up or anything...my yard is host to a lot of chipmunks and bunnies but I thought they weren't supposed to like garlic. In the very early spring I noticed one clove had been dug up, so I replanted it and proceeded to also plant kale in there and put up some netting because I knew at least the bunnies would go after the kale. I start to see some green stalks growing in the areas where I'd put garlic. Not enough. Hrm. A few weeks ago, I realized those green stalks were actually weeds. Not garlic. There is no garlic. Some varmint or other absconded with it all. The kale was just fine, thankfully. Actually, if anyone wants to come over, I can totally host a salad party because there's more than I can handle!
Ah. Glad to see this video today. I've started using this channel as a yardstick to know when I still have 1 more month to do whatever they are doing. Planting in April? We'll see about May. Harvesting in June? July it is. Planting a second sow in September? Next May....
You guys have such discipline. I always get impatient and harvest garlic too early. Same with carrots. I need a locking bed cover that will not unlock until the garlic is ready.
I watch another gardening channel that days once it scales and 4 or 5 leaves die off u can go to town. ours was ready like a minth early this year. we got a bumper crop. but we had MAD rain
Some years ago, I just bought grocery store garlic, and did not know anything about hard neck or soft neck etc. I have had hoards of garlic anytime I want some. A friend gave me elephant garlic a few years ago, and it is good too. And the Egyptian walking onions are doing fabulous... I have other onions also. I am trying leeks this year, so far they look like green hair. My chives are great... Last year I had a large wheelbarrow full and a large box. I shared it with lots of friends.
I can't wait for august 15th, its the possession date for my new home! I'm going to have my own yard with great garden space! 🧄🤩 getting myself as prepared as i can be!! I've been watching your videos for years, and i FINALLY get to put more of your tips and tricks to use! Thank you everyone at epic!
Last year I kept my largest bulbs of Music garlic and replanted it in the fall. This spring they grew up to my shoulder and I’m 5’3”. Can’t wait to see what my harvest is going to be like at the end of the month.
I have 3 or 4 volunteer tomato plants that are growing up in my garlic bed (was tomato bed last year). So, win...win... After I pull the garlic, I'm going to plant a second bed in bush beans.
Dude... my largest garlic is so massive the stock is about 2 inches wide .. the bulbs are going to be massive !!! My 1stcyear growing garlic in Central PA and its going great in a little 4 x 6 bulb square .. this fall I'm going to plant SOOO MUCH MORE for next year .. I wanna line next years tomato beds and also have a dedicated garlic bed again
I do my tomatoes like that. Once they get near the top you can remove the lower ties and slide the plant down the pole. It gives you a bit more growing time.
🌺My husband and I are hoping to get a good harvest with garlic. Last two year we have failed. Glad you have a great harvest. Garlic powder, garlic salt, pickled garlic or even roasted garlic would be great. Really enjoy watching you and Jacque. Mahalo see you in your next video.
It’s an early garlic harvest. Here in Nevada I usually harvest my garlic around 4 of July. I already harvested my garlic and is curing one month early June 4.
Well, I have made it through all of the homestead videos! What a journey! Things are looking really awesome this year. Gives me hope that I can do a similar thing on this property given some time.
Had a weird issue with my fall planted garlic(only 2 plants) this time. They sprouted quickly and survived the 17F winter and didn’t die back in the cold at all. However, from the frost onward, the garlic was fused into one solid stalk. Like imagine how a bamboo grows - one thick stem with no offleafing. It didn’t grow taller, only slightly thicker, and looked very sick. In late spring I manually tore the leaves open(like tearing apart string cheese) to see wtf was going on inside and found that MULTIPLE leaves had been trapped inside the outer ones, crushed and coiled tight like springs never able to emerge. This is gross, sorry, but it was like the garlic leaves were ingrown hairs inside the outer leaves, it was the darnedest thing. Anyways basically I’m here to soak up all the garlic knowledge I can for next time. 😂 gonna be going back through your and Jacques’ garlic vids! One day 🤞
My garlic and onion growing prowess is disappointing. The one onion I got didn’t bulb hahaha! My garlic appears to be tiny too, but we’ll see. Thanks for making these videos! They’re inspiring!
We amended our garlic bed with goat poo last fall before we planted, and it is GIGANTIC! No scapes yet, so still a while to go up here in Washington, but I have high hopes!
I have to give so much props to your team at the epic homestead! Not only did you build this channel into a global brand but Jacque and the rest of your dream team designed this beautiful setup 🙂 P.s. I hope both your flocks are doing well 🥚🐔
It depends on your zone, please don’t get frustrated when you see others harvesting plants “early” in the season. I live in Long Island, New York , zone 7B and planted the garlic last October 2023. I just harvested a few today. Still have three containers of garlic that isn’t ready to harvest yet. Possibly later in July. So only go by your zone to determine harvesting time. Happy Gardening all! 😊🙌🏾❤️
For emergencies and natural disasters Garlic-shaped dream house …etc The vast garlic fields I think that's the Guardians' grand dream.🛡🗡️ The garlic in this video is like a crystallization of earth and sweat. Apparently professionals use horse manure and straw to pile up the soil when growing vegetables, but do you have any horse manure nearby? 🐎💩🙄💩 Even if you bring a horse, you still need to feed it carrots, so you can't fail to make carrots, and so on.I've been thinking about horse poop since the day before yesterday.
What should we make with the garlic that we couldn't cure and store?
Make some Dracula repellent! 😂
Ferment it in honey
Chili garlic oil!
Toum!! It lasts forever and is delicious on everything!
Roast it and then freeze for later😁

Charles Dowding recently did a video on this

the garlic has no peal layers because you pulled it way to late, once 2-3 bottom leaves brown its usually time to harvest.

Y'all wholesome by the way. I love the level of respect between you two.

The laughing intro will always be good.
Lol......"summer starts when you pull your garlic".........In zone 4 summer is basically over when you pull your garlic (late July - early August)
I love making sourdough, and then making a garlic pesto, and grilling it on with toast.
Goest great with salad/tomatoes.
I am growing garlic for the first time ever this year and it's music! Glad to hear you recommend it! I can't wait!
Great job on your Garlic Harvest, you definitely redeemed your self from last years 😅
It might be a bit chaotic in places, but Im loving the look of the drip in that pepper bed and the tomato and basil alternating.
Lovely moment under the loquat. My loquat is a small stick with no leaves right now😂
Have you ever braided your garlic? It keeps it organized and it hangs up easily.

Beautiful! I will try planting garlic this winter. I am growing my first Oxheart and Roma tomatoes this year and they are coming along.

Wow garlic sure takes longer in my climate. I planted mine in mid october, cut the scapes about a week ago. Still probably 3-4 weeks till harvest

Not the planned laugh at the beginning 😂😂😂 hilarious 🤣 love you guys!
The Filipino blood in him came out when he start singing at the end. 🥰
You could also use honey to help with the other garlic that has no skin.
Garden looks great
5:56 Thank you Paul
Can’t believe Eric 3-bit that sweet Tom. Those boys should definitely be in-oned.
Kevin said he's bullish on tomatoes this season ... I'm all in boys!
Kevin and Jacques - have you ever made garlic scape pesto? Highly recommend
For emergencies and natural disasters
Garlic-shaped dream house …etc

Holy shit! U r already harvesting garlic? My garlic bed had snow on it 3 weeks ago. I usually harvest garlic in August.
Kevin is about to start another channel called either Epic Garlic King or Eric Garlicky.
Lol! I actually said "Thank you paul" out loud 😂 5:57
What fertilizer do you use on garlic? Thanks
Nice video guys. Where do jaques get his garden boots from ? They look sweet
You and jaques should make sume homegrown strawberry ice cream and homegrown waffles or pancakes
Thanks Paul
Store the varieties you want to grow next year store and eat the other, definitely eat the ones that have already divided 😁
Another celebrity garden makeover soon?
OX Heart tomatoes are fantastic
Confit it or make fresh toum, Lebanese style garlic puree/mousse.
There is no sun here in north Texas 😂
You guys, my head is in the gutter during this whole video. 😅
What was the tomato you both tried?
My hard neck garlic is looking rough but has not produced scapes 😢 I am at a loss of when to pick it 😭
Loved video. I live far away in Lakeside, California
Wait. Does Jacque not work for you anymore??
Tomatoes look great bro
GARDEN MEN, hello I am making tacos, not with my own tomatoes though, yet!
What's up bros and broettes
Eric's homestead
Wadidaw abangku ❤🎉
so do you cure the ones without paper?
No, you just have to use them up.
I never let mine get that brown.
Jacques seems like a really nice guy 😁
I planted 2 whole heads that I purchased from you, but only ended up with 2 heads. I have no idea what happened.
I assume you split out the cloves and planted ten to twenty cloves but only got 2 plants emerging?
I'm pretty sure the chipmunks took all of mine.
Yes. I planted each clove.
Thanks Paul 😂
They don't have the paper because you waited a bit too long to harvest, nothing to do with the water.
Pimp tomatoe...lol
Wait, you're Filipino?
I thought the garlic was ice cream in the thumbnail.
2nd
I liked my own comment 😅
You lose algor points for that
Jaques...i'm sorry, but you need to stand up straight, you're gonna fuck up your back
I know you guys are hetero, but can you adopt me? (I'm a full grown man)

Thanks Paul
Thank you Paul !
