1 year subscription to New York Times, and etc.. things of that nature. For me, the biggest free app I got was the Sketchbook. It's simply awesome on this 2014 edition, if you are an artist. :)
picked up a Nexus 10 from release. Aside from having to replace the battery, it's still my favorite tablet! Others have more features that some might find necessary(understandably), and this might open apps a second slower, but it still has enough horsepower to run games and apps I like, and the media performance is still near class leading experience. I will be using this until it no longer powers on.
I bought the new nexus 7 and the new note 8.1 which is a similar comparison and I returned the Nexus 7 for the Note 8.1. Sometimes there is a slight lag but its' nothing to cry about. I do enjoy all the features from the Note by far. I felt that the nexus was like having a dull powerful sports car without automatic windows nor power locks, and the Note was a sports car with lots of features but sometimes burns too much gas if you floor it. I do multi-task and don't see any difference in performance. Now im in the market for a 10 inch tablet so will wait for the new nexus and give it a chance.
Great review. Thanks for making things easier. Would love to see some kind of text graphic at the end as you talk about the final pros and cons. A lot of information to digest in that video and would love to see the true differences in what you thought was better. Each "point" would get a rating that way those of us on a budget could see if it was truly worth it to pay the extra money. Thanks again.
Great vid. I am so relieved to finally see a video comparing color saturation. I just returned my nexus 7 (2013) bc the color are SOOO completely washed. I heard N10 was better but this video clearly shows how much more depth and color the 10.1 has over the N10. For me, this is what I've been trying to find out. Thanks for taking the time to show such an important detail. Even when playing the race car game, you can clearly see just how much more crisp and vibrant the 10.1 is.
Very soon my Nexus 10 will be running kit kat, and after owning it for a year, it stills run near perfect, love that device. Samsung needs to do a project butter on touch wiz, its way to dynamic for its own good. Anyway, keep up the good work Taylor, your reviews just seem to be getting better all the time!
That was a great video. I liked the fact you broke battery life down to stand-by and normal use. I liked you were using the tablet while narrating. Very good video man, keep up the good work.

excellent review. Thank you. I am still no closer to deciding which one to get, after having to send back my Asus Memo Pad with battery problems. Am not techy, so most of these reviews go right over my head! lol
Thanks, man. I'm well versed in how to use Android tablets. The Nexus 10 in particular has much less available RAM. A sizeable chunk seems to be dedicated to the display, leaving only around 400-500 mb available at any given time. By comparison, my Moto X has around 800 mb available, even with lots of apps running in the background. The Nexus 10 performs more like the Nexus 7, a tablet with only 1 gb of RAM.
I would say it comes in handy for a guy like me that's less familiar with stock Android on tablets. I do own an Android smartphone, but just not sure which tablet to get. Of course if I choose the nexus 10 I would wait for the new one to launch, if I don't it will save me some time.
Taylor, my Nexus 10 is always pretty low on RAM and refreshes tabs in Chrome constantly (much as other Android devices with 1 GB or RAM did). Did you happen to notice this behavior on the Note 10.1? The display models I tried were far too laggy for me to consider, but I really hate the page refreshes.
They should make an update on this since the note 10.1 2014 edition got the android 4.4 (kitkat) which according to all the reviews I've seen about it fixes every issue from the stuttering which was a software problem and in no means was hardware.
I pick the Note! I've had the previous Note for a year and found it very useful for multitasking and note taking is excellent. I just picked up the 2014 edition and the upgrade is well worth it. The Nexus is great but I rather have a Nexus 7. As far as a 10 inch tablet.... The Note 10.1 is hands down the best 10 Inc Android tablet and btw better then the iPad air.
That's with some apps running in the background, but it goes to show that there isn't a lot of free RAM available for multitasking. My research on the internet tells me that a large chunk of the RAM is dedicated to the GPU for that high-resolution screen. This is why I was looking into the 10.1 (2014) Note. It's essentially a slightly better Nexus 10 with an extra gig of RAM, which is probably offset by Touchwiz bloat anyway.
FYI TAYLOR: They did not texturize the back of black version of the new 10.1 like they did the Note 3. The black and white 10.1 have the same hard plastic texture. Not the pleather feeling that the black Note 3 has. I was disappointed to see this as soon as I pulled the Note 10.1 black version out of the box. I was looking forward to that because I love it on the black Note 3 so much.
Samsung 10.1 thanks to extra versatility of the S Pen. I have a Note 2 so I'm also more with the Samsung set up. They also have a retail store at a large shopping store nearby so if I have any problems with the device I can usually get something sorted on the spot like getting one without bloatware if I buy it outright.
I am a current nexus 10 owner and I think that you should wait for the new one, but if they don't bring one out this year, I would buy the current one because it is a very good tablet, but I would wait and see if there is a new one
I can't decide which one to get. On one hand the note has expandable storage, but has TouchWiz skin on top. On the other hand the nexus has stock Android, but no expandable storage. If Samsung makes a Nexus 10 with micro sd expansion then I will be first on Amazon to by one.
I had the N10. Just sold it because gaming performance sucked on it. I loved everything else about it but I need a solid all around tablet. I just picked up a Note 2014 from ebay and I hope updates have made it better since this video is 6 months old. I had the first note 10.1 and loved it. Had to sell it b/c I needed money so instead of going back to the original, I went with the updated version. I love Android. Don't start a civil war, just be glad we have more options as an OS instead of lame Apple tablets being the same exact thing over and over. In b4 cool story bro.
If they don't announce the N10 refresh before the Ipad Air is released I'm going iPad as well. I'm hoping the N10 is announced tomorrow and it is close spec wise to the 2014 Note 10.1 but without the bloatware that I consider touchwiz to be.
I don't think anyone should say anything until Samsung gets a software update of any kind. I say this because before Android 4.3 the google nexus 10 was the most lag free, no nonsense tablet there was. Yeah it got hot, just like on kitkat, but it ran iron man with no lag ever, literally ever. Both devices should have competed on stock, then you will see the actual brand new power bottle devices have when they have a firmware that is doctored to their hardware... just like how ps3 never needed it's fan when it was on firmware 1.5, it didn't crash, nothing! I could play skyrim for days straight and it will be room temperature. I hate to say it, but devices always seem to shine when they're emulated in my opinion. If I emulate Android, I will never have to worry about the slow crawl and fast hype of new devices, nor have to worry about losing out on games because I don't have the processor, but the power to run it... I'm looking at 90 percent of Snapdragon games. I'm just waiting for windows to stop taunting Android hardware, and just make a beefed up device I can use to lap around every day multitasking, personalization, and entertainment... something that Android struggles with after a new tier of devices are born, and get left behind.
People forget the Nexus 10 is almost 3 years old. Compared to Galaxy stuff I think the only question that remains is: should I buy the Nexus 10 now or wait the new version?
Why is it always that the octa core samsung devices perform worse than the quad version? I heard people complaining about lag on the octa note 3 while I never experienced the slightest lag on mine (US). I'm pretty sure the same goes for the note 10.1. I tried it EXTENSIVELY and didnt notice a problem.
I love the nexus experience but I can't see any reason to get a 10" tablet without multi window, I hope they implement a similar feature on vanilla android soon.
They have already improved a lot over the years and honestly the commentary on TouchWiz ruining the smoothness is quite often very exaggerated. TouchWiz can do more, it's still the faster tablet with games as it should and the occasional stuttering is never really as annoying or unacceptable as is often claimed. Better yet, the same kind of stuttering happens on iPads that are filled up good with apps and no one seems to ever complain about that. Battery performance is more than acceptable.
I'm with everyone on hating touch wiz but don't forget that you can put a launcher . I use nova launcher to make my note 3 look like stock Android but it keeps Samsungs software features so it's a win win on both sides
Yeah I agree with you I also have a nexus 10 and I used to have the same issues. now in order to avoid them, I have to turn off the wifi every time I stop using my nexus 10. on the other hand I also have and iPad mini and a new nexus 7 always connected to my wifi and I never experience those issues. I wonder why
I have to disagree with you on the premium feel off the Nexus 10. It makes a cracking sound if you press the back which has a rubber feel. Not so premium in my opinion. But I agree with you on the Touchwiz performance. Samsung really has to do something about it. TW is becoming too heavy for even the best SoC's to date.
My friend, an Apple fanboy, always says that tolerating mediocre performance and reliability just for an abundance of features that you probably don't need is typical Android mentality. Funny how he is comparing a tablet from 2012 to a tablet from 2014. And the 2012 still comes out on top.....
Actually the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition was released back in 2013. It was just called 2014 to get attention from buyers.

excellent review. Thank you. I am still no closer to deciding which one to get, after having to send back my Asus Memo Pad with battery problems. Am not techy, so most of these reviews go right over my head! lol
Nexus 10 is amazing. We're almost at the end of 2014 and I'm buying one.
Good decision. I just got one and it's amazing how smooth it is with the new 5.0 lolipop update.
herbeenc I'm pretty happy for having my old iPad replaced by a Nexus 10.
Lucas Nascimento i could get the 16gb version for 130 bucks.. should i get it
HasNi Hassaan Definitely. Yes
11 months with my nexus 10 i cant find a better tablet for me
LOVING it

Looking to spoil myself abd get a tablet. Any suggestions?
Nexus 7 second gen or Nexus 10.
StuffTubeAmwesome I would totally if they would allow SD card storage.
MrAlexjames94 If you buy a OTG cable you can have your SD card storage on the Nexus 10.
Very handy information. Thank you!
Thanks for the clarification! So the Nexus 10's screen has an anti-glare/matte surface to begin with?
I would say it comes in handy for a guy like me that's less familiar with stock Android on tablets. I do own an Android smartphone, but just not sure which tablet to get. Of course if I choose the nexus 10 I would wait for the new one to launch, if I don't it will save me some time.

Will you guys do a a compare or review about the Samsung ATIV Tab 3 . Thanks

I would get 10.1 2014 edition
would any of the nexus 10 owners recommend waiting for the new one or pick the current one up?
is there a big difference between the exynos and the snapdragon 800 processor?
I would never give away my nexus 10 for a note 10.1, the multitasking performance is just awesome!

TM is the technical king, never misses a detail ever.

M Leanne M No new Nexus 10 on Google's plans. I bought an "old" Nexus 10 and I'm pretty happy with it.

god, nexus looks ugly
N10 ftw! Using it right now (:
note 10.1 (2014) for me
Can you compare samsung galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition with samsung ativ smart pc 500t??
Yeah I agree with you I also have a nexus 10 and I used to have the same issues. now in order to avoid them, I have to turn off the wifi every time I stop using my nexus 10. on the other hand I also have and iPad mini and a new nexus 7 always connected to my wifi and I never experience those issues. Superb review,
Both the tablets are awsome, as they have led flash in rear camera....
imagine running stock android on note
It looks like you have a matte screen protector on the Nexus 10, this will make the display look slightly washed out.
My friend, an Apple fanboy, always says that tolerating mediocre performance and reliability just for an abundance of features that you probably don't need is typical Android mentality. Looking at the Samsung Note and briefly thinking "wow I want that" made me realise how right he actually is. Screw that. I'm getting a Nexus 7!
Mediocre performance? Your friend should take his own advice.
Would the Note 10.1 be better if I get rid of TouchWiz and use a different one?
Can't wait for the comparison to the Ipad Air.
Good work Mr.Martin
than* have you used the iPad air yet??
The nexus 10 is the better long term tablet because it will get the updates more regularly but my only complaint is they are both made by Samsung but the nexus looks like it will hold up better over time.
do they have ad hoc connection?
What is the game that you played ... The racing game?
I like the SPen, but I don't like that TouchWiz makes the tablet lag and stutters.
Great comparison. I'm thinking to get rid of my nexus 10 for the note 10.1.
I'm not trying to start a lame war but isn't that out of focus to focis on a specific part of a divice a the verge thing?
I like the galaxy note 10.1
I get your point, the Note 3 lags significantly less than the note 10.1, but the Exynos Note 3 performs just as well as the Snapdragon variant, my point is, touchwiz will produce the same amount of stutter whether if its the Snapdragon or the Exynos, hope u can get your hands on the Snapdragon 10.1 and check, cheers!
to see how fast tech is growing
Why is it that they don't put adobe flash in tablets again?
i tried to update my iMac (high-end late 2012) but when the update try's to download a get the error message "OSX Mavericks failed to download" any one else getting this problem?
While I appreciate the video I can't help but think the timing is strange comparing a year old Nexus 10 with a newly released Note 10.1 as the nexus 10 refresh is due any day/week.
Very nicely done! Thanks.
Samsung claims that there is 600$ worth of add-ons in the note 10.1 2014, can you tell what is it?
The Note 2014 is extremely modern and has a wealth of features with superb hardware. But I HATE TouchWiz because it's so laggy; even on the Note 2014 it lags! No, Taylor's right. It has something to do with the Exynos chip. It just doesn't perform like it should. I strongly suspect that the Snapdragon version of the 10.1 will run much better, if my Note 3 is any indication.
The display on the Nexus 10 is 10.05, Pocketnow, not 10.1.
can u compare the new note 10.1 to the old note 10.1
I seriously don't understand why Samsung is still doing physical button layout. It simply doesn't work on tablets...It's just amazing to me how the 2012 nexus is still the best 10" android tablet! How can samsung not understand that what they made then in partnership with google simply works?
Since progress in the mobile sector is running at a staggering pace comparing the latest model to its one year old cousin is not telling much. Especially when the sw packages are so vastly different.
However to Samsungs credit (and Googles shame) one has to say that pure Android makes no use of the extra space on 10" tablets. Samsungs much derided GUI is far ahead in that regard.
In 2013 multi-wnd should be 2nd nature to every mobile OS. To me an inexcusable omission on pure Android and iOS.
Hey, o hope you guys didn't forget the xperia z tablet is also great, id like to see a vs.
this comparison would have made more sense after the kitkat update to the nexus
Am I the only one who actually prefers full screen notifications when swiping down from the top?
Not to mention that Taylor seems to prefer Android over apple and that's a plus in my book.
It's getting better to understand his voice. :-)
Wireless ac on the note 10.1 2014 is awesome
both are great and have high specs , i'd get the nexus ( Google Edition )
I'm sure kitkat will be the last update on the nexus 10! I hope the new nexus 10 arrives soon!!
Both of them humiliate that iFail called "ipad air"
I love nexus devices, have a 4 and a 7, wants the 10 to just because
2:23 Exynos 5420, pretty sure they dont have the same Soc
Benchmarks?
isn't note 10.1 has Exynos 5420?
why explaned Exynos 5250?
5420 power is very higher than 5250
The note is the better tablet, but it should be. It's a year newer and more expensive.
I want to get the new Nexus 10, if they have it.
Great review
Still use my old note 10.1 for work :)
why is the home button even there
