    I keep seeing people say that you should only pursue cybersecurity if you have a passion for it - I don't, at least not yet. The problem is that waiting to find my passion has led be nowhere but working retail at 27 for chumpchange. What I do have passion for is finding stability, which I hope will be enough.

    I have been retrenched for 7 months, sick and tired of getting smashed in the face by "...we regret to inform you that..." type-of-emails from employers after shit tons of emails. With an age of 46 years, coupled with a recognised degree in infosystems and info management, along with an MBA from UK, I have also started my certification path. A+, CC, CSSP, CISSP, Google CyberSec Pro Cert etc, and have also tweeked my CV towards a Cybersec theme. Also mentally prepared to get a 70% of pay cut just to get my feet into the industry. All the companies, even the most basic entry levels, asked for 3 years experience LOL...I must admit, its quite a downer so far, but I am not giving up. Keep up with the tips and transparent sharing - loving it! 🙂

    • @WithSandra
      @WithSandra  Год назад +1

      In terms of beginner certs, the GIAC GSEC cert is a popular option but I think it really depends on what you’re looking for. For example, some roles may be more niche and want a specific GIAC cert for digital forensics but there may be other companies who want you to have a general CISSP. Getting one niche cert in your specialization and one general security cert would probably be the most beneficial. Good luck on deciding whats right for you!💯

      Most people in tech I have noticed are introverts. In fact in my 3 years in multiple tech fields, I have only met around 3 or 4 extroverts in these fields. So most all my colleagues feel the same as you do about speaking to others or human interactions.
      I have done 3 roles in cyber security, and none of them involved presentational meetings. All human interactions were done by emails, ticket recording, or communication through some sort of writing/text. The cyber security roles I was involved in was Identity Access Management, Privilege Access Management, and Data Loss Prevention. They are all basic entry roles. But I believe there are many roles that doesn’t involve speaking out loud in a presentation situation.

I've personally never felt that way and pursued cybersecurity almost entirely for the monetary benefits and am very happy with my decision. Also, not being that interested in cybersecurity (other than from a monetary perspective), has never been a hindrance in terms of my ability to perform on the job or to advance in my career. If I chose to go into cyber security, would you recommend getting a bachelors/masters degree even if you feel like you cannot afford higher education? I know there are people who work in cyber security who have masters degrees. I know of one personally and another one who plans on pursuing a masters degree after his bachelors degree. I never liked school but fear that I may need to fall prey to pursuing higher education due to other competition during interviews especially it being 2022 and going into 2023 pretty soon. • @addd21323
      @addd21323 Год назад +11

      Get a security+ and maybe also a network+, then take ANY job in the security field, regardless of pay. After 3-6 months, job hop and land a better job that pays more. Eventually yes you will want to pursue at least a bachelors, but you can do this affordably by not choosing an expensive school. As long as it's regionally accredited, no one cares where you went to school. For example, Look at schools like WGU. You should also be able to use the money from your security job to afford this so that way you don't have to take a loan. Also, make sure to take advantage of government programs wherever possible. For example, look into the American Opportunity Tax Credit, that should cut out most of the cost of WGU. Continue to job hop and pursue certificates and you'll be well on your way into the career.
      Most importantly, make sure that when you're taking these certifications and working on your degree, you're really learning the material and not just trying to cram the bare minimum to pass things. When you get to the interview process, if you just crammed your way to getting the certs/degrees it will become very apparent when you can't answer any of the technical questions.
