  • You can plant food plots a lot later than you think! While there is a cut-off time to plant a successful food plot during the Fall, ANYONE can still plant them in September, and some of you can even plant WELL into October. Here is what, how and when you can plant the latest food plot in your region.
Don't forget to check out my new food plot web class to help guide you to food plot success, o matter how late that you plant:

Did you create a great food plot to hunt? Then make sure you are getting the most out of your hard work by following my weather forecast deer hunting predictions when you head to the woods. Check out HuntCast, at:

This is my first year implementing the “Sturgis system” (new property purchased in late 2020) and the results have been incredible. 1.25 acres of rye went down Aug 31 and is coming in nicely to complement .5 acres of clover and 1.5 of sweet feast. Had nothing but does all summer but right on cue in the last week a monster 11 point and a nice 10 have shifted out of their summer range and onto the property. Can’t wait for our September 15 opener in New Hampshire!

NH. Man i wish i had soil that worked like that. In SW NH and got new 33 acres this year. Had old forested areas that we cleared out and soil tested. 4.4 ph. Added tons of lime and fertilizer and still struggling to get much to grow besides some clover logging roads. But I guess its better than nothing!

Jeff really knows his stuff that’s for sure. I have an acre of sweet feast brassica mixed with radish added as Jeff recommends and the results couldn’t be better. I planted no till and I can’t imagine anyone has better results till or no till. I was lucky and got timely rain and that helps for sure. I will end up close to ten tons of forage on that acre at the rate it’s growing. It’s already above knee height. I also planted an acre of old faithful rye and it is also doing great. As always Thanks to Jeff!

Received a kick in the nads when I saw the brassicas bottom leaves turned yellow and stunted ....... too much rain in a short period of time. Spread Urea before a rain on them but haven’t been back to see how they are doing. Can they recover? The Fall forage blend of the plot looks awesome and topped it off with winter rye around Labor Day. Guess I’ll come armed with more rye in case the brassicas didn’t do well but didn’t want to spread it on until I see how or if they recovered. One thing I know is I could never have been a farmer! Too stressed out about the weather all the time. My little experience sure makes me appreciate and admire their hard work!.... just about go time!!

I own an agricultural parcel of 50 acres in Southern Ontario.
A long time ago, before I had ever heard of Sturgis I figured out all by myself..... "If you build it, they will come".
Sturgis RUclips channel popped up on my phone one day and I watched every video since then because it aligns with my own goals of habitat improvement and sustainable hunting.
I envy Sturgis doing what he loves for a living and earning a living on it too!
I have mixed food plots on my land that the deer can graze all year long on and a few bushes and a couple swamps and a creek going from one end of my property to the other.
Two weeks ago the farmer that rents my agricultural fields planted oats as a cover crop on the fields. The oat fields are literally infested with deer out consuming the lush , sweet fresh growth. They are currently preferring it over my mixed food plots.
The biggest problem I have is when you work hard to improve your land and create habitat and attract wildlife and have success doing it it also attracts poachers.
I now spend more time hunting poachers than I spend hunting 🦌.
    LOL

There is a spot in my woods where I've wanted to create a small kill plot for several years, but I just never seemed to get around to it, until this October! It was pretty warm, and activity on the neighbor's property seemed to have things pretty messed up in that area, so I decided to finally do it. I created the food plot on the 14th of October. I didn't do anything to the ground except mow all the brush down with my DR Brush Mower. Then on October 18th, I decided to try seeding it with winter rye even though it was so late because we had rain and milder than normal temps forecast for the next week. I really wasn't too optimistic about it growing this fall. I didn't cultipack it or anything. I just broadcast the seed with my hand seeder. I hadn't been back down there for a couple of weeks until today. I couldn't believe that plot! That winter rye germinated and is growing great even though we've had a lot of days below freezing lately! That explains why I'm getting so many pictures out of that new plot every single day; both deer and turkeys!

Take WHS advice to heart. We followed their advice for a Hardwood food plot...so far it has worked as Jeff said it would. We've had two minor setbacks. Our first seeding was mid-August. Not long after it had rained. Our 2nd and 3rd seedings were the first week / weekend of Sept 2021 after a two week drought...My daughter and I prayed for rain. Oh, We got rain....A LOT of Rain...From the 7th -15th downpour or raining on and off...Set back #2: RONA...my entire family was in Rona Jail for another 10days... this Friday will be the first time on the plot in nearly 4 weeks...
This season has been Plot 1.0 the learning season...There has been so much involved...I believe we are better prepared for the late fall planting....and Spring.

Question? I've got my back 5 acres that I've scraped out the leaves to bare ground and tossed down some shaded clover. My problem is that its all forest with limited light coming in. I was advised to try "Deep Woods" brand, as its made for shade. I just planted it about 8 days ago.
Can you recommend a better product? Or is this pretty good? After the season and pre-Spring, I'll remove some trees to open up more light. I've already marked the ones I intent to cut. Thanks!

I use winter wheat. I have a small field tucked into a far hidden corner of my homestead where we grow big plots of sweet corn, beans and the odd other low maintenance food crops in the summer. This will be my second year of following the summer crops with a planting of winter wheat (adding some tillage radish as well this year) as both a food plot and a cover crop to be killed and planted into the following spring. The deer loved the winter wheat last year. I live in the big woods in canadian shield and there isn't any AG fields around here. Had deer digging through the snow well into early February last year

Winter wheat, winter wheat, winter wheat!!! Wheat can germinate at 40 degrees and I’ve experimented with both and the deer will walk right through the rye to get to the wheat. I planted 2 acres 2 weeks ago. Wheat and ladino and the deer are mowing it down. Going to have to plant another 2 acres to keep up with the grazing. Really enjoy these videos but I’m just not sold on RYE.

IN southeastern KY and we average a frost 50% of the time by October 16th, by Halloween that percentage goes up 90% of the time. It’s currently Sept 15 today. And 99% of trees are still green. Usually by the second full week of October they are completely turning. I have planted fall/ winter food plots as late sept 14th with success but really like Labor Day as the latest planting. Gives 8-10 weeks before frosting. Going to check my plots today and if they aren’t looking good, hitting with rye, and plot boost.

At my farm in Central MO we have had 0.2" of rain since the beginning of July. I used a no-till drill to do two of my plots but another was too hard to get it in so I used a small tiller and wiggled my tractor in there and tilled it. Its basically a total fail. I have now decided to throw some Rye down. Its about 1/3 of an acre and put a 56lb bag of rye on it. After 10 days the seed is still there just baking. Rye is tough but this desert drought we are in may very well be too much for rye even. My drilled plots are doing ok but not great. Sad year. We went from Biblical rain in late June/early July to nothing for over 2 months. We are hurting bad. On top of no rain we have had 90% of days over 90. I'll probably hit it with another bushel of rye October 1 then just throw in the towel.

Thank you for the information about plots. So when planting clover at this time of year, are you expecting foliage growth during the season? And if not, will frost kill it and how does that work with it coming out in spring? I am new to food plot management. I have a very small hide hole plot cleared that we will plant this weekend, but others, maybe 2 acres total that I will continue working on on Saturdays when I have days off from work. My deer herd numbers seem quite low, lots of coyote predation in the area, and its a high hunting pressure area. I own 20 acres on the edge of a huge creekbottom swamp. Location is Southeast Louisiana, zone 8b
