Never hurts to give the tuning procedures in the manual a little review! 😬 Only thing wrong with that SW2 is that those turn fins on the outer edges of the transom need to be adjusted downward. The closer they are to 90 degrees vertical, the sharper the boat will turn, especially while up on plane…could also double check that your steering dual rate is maxxed🤘🏻🤘🏻
Also he had the little plastik thing on the rudder... thats why it did not turn well. It is just for protection, so it is meant to be removed before driving the boat.
Thats the sheer screw,they are supposed to break when they his something so it don't damage the boat,it's plastic. Put a zip tie in its place for quick easy fix.

If you do another rc boat video, you should bring a fishing net and extension pole. It might be able to retrieve a sunken boat.
I bet you left the plastic rudder protector on that it has fitted out of the box. This will slow it right down and will have hardly any steering. It will also overheat the motor and speed control as the water intakes are on the rudder.

The last time I watched you two take the boat on the water I died laughing, and I hoped for some more. Today's the day... and you did not disappoint.
What you call "some sort of diffuser" are the trim tabs. They control the attitude of the boat. Set them up, nose/bow goes up and speed does too (conversely, setting them down, makes the nose/bow go down). Too much up will result in the boat getting airborne at high speed and flip spectacularly 😁. Both of the boats were running too much nose down (running 'wet', as a boater would say), hence their inability to attain the advertised speed, and even, in some instances, "submarining" when hitting a wave. Prop shaft angle and depth also has great influence in the boat's attitude. My guess is, they came with a very conservative setup from the factory.

@@KevinTalbotTV the procedure here is, make the prop shaft parallell with the hull’s keel.
To do this , place the hull on a table, loosen the bolts that hold the strut (the thing that holds the prop shaft) and force it into a stack of wood bits, as high as it has to be, to match the height if the transmission. Then tighten it. You now have a perfectly aligned thrust axis. Now, just get the trim tabs way up (so that they do not touch the water) and work your way down, until the boat is as fast as possible, whithout getting airborne.
@@KevinTalbotTV Also, I forgot to mention: before getting into prop shaft/trim tab angle, one must observe the center of gravity. In a boat such as this, it it between 28%-32% measured from the transom. In this case 36" x 30% = 10.8". Move the batteries fore and aft to achieve a proper CG, like in an helicopter or plane😁.
The best way to ascertain a boat is levelled, is to hit some waves. When hitting a wave, the boat will jump, and, if correctly balanced, will land levelled. If it lands tail first -> CG too aft. If it lands bow first -? CG too forward. Simple!
It is this tuning that makes running boats so much fun. And then, once you got the balance right, it is time to get into propellers! The fun never ends!

Its not steering because the rutter has a feature where it hits land it folds up you need to put it at 90° the screw did fall out edit: I have the same boat and mine steers way better 🤨
You also still have the rubber cover on the rudder, if you take that off it might help, mine turns pretty well.

Your trim tabs are down too far, it is making the boat plow.
And get a roll of hatch tape, there is no such thing as a totally waterproof model boat.

The new Recoil 2 comes with lipo and charger, not too expensive of an investment to try it out. And its turning performance is super sharp.

That was an insane vid Brother Kev!😆The Sonicwake is one of the best RTR's to date imo! Yours needed some major tuning out of the box it looks! I've been running boats for 25 years and that one was ill handling for sure! I have two of them and they perform killer once tuned! The screw that came out was a nylon breakaway screw to save the boat transom of you hit something or snag a stick in the water. The allen key definitely worked for a quick fix! LOL Awesome vid though bro!!!

Kev I think one of the problems with the steering is those two fins were faced down into the water too much but if you lifted them up a little it would help it steer more. BTW I am a long-time fan I always love your videos!!! I might have a boat for you to test out.

I found a cool cheap boat that I think you’d like, it says 30mph but only goes 10mph and it has even less steering then yours, like in a large lake it doesn’t even make it round but if you press a button it will have steering comparable to yours when going left and none at all when going right

And, there we have it: Yet another video of plainly doing everything wrong with boats. For starters, always provide some flotation, that is, some foam occupying the empty spaces in the hull, so that water can't. Usually, foam pool noodles are a good choice. You could have saved the Volantex with it.
Next, the screw you were missing in the rudder is a brass screw designed to break/shear off in the event of the rudder hitting something, to save the rudder - It must have fallen, was not tightened properly, or you just hit something and it did its job.
And, finally, rudder authority is not great while going slow in fast boats. They are designed to turn well at almost full speed. Besides, the rudder offset to the right, and the prop torque promote better turning to the right (race direction). Turning left is always very slow, especially at such low speed.
Not to mention, as I did before on other of your boat tests, the failure to disassemble, inspect, and properly lubricate the flex shaft transmission.
I am not a hater, I love your channel, and everything you post in it. But in the boat department, it is severely lacking. I see you take proper care and maintenance in cars and helis, and regarding all of its safety principles. But not for boats, unfortunately. I fear that someone watching your channel takes a carefree approach to high performance r/c boating and lose their boat, or, even worse, get hurt.

Me too, I broke the little prong that holds it at the front, so I 3D-printed a super thick one in carbon fiber reinforced nylon :D
The self-righting system causes to much drag on one side, for the boat to perform desired speeds or sharp turning. Plug the hole

Give it less trim tab. It runs bow-down, which is why it's slow and why it's hard to steer.
Get a digital angle finder and place the boat on the work bench upside down. Zero the angle finder lengthwise on the bottom at the stern. Now set each trim tab to 3 degrees up, or down as it were when the boat is upside down. You can also try 5 degrees, but start with 3. This will free up the bow and make the boat run a lot cleaner. Also, see where the balance point is. Should be around 28% forward of the transom.

LOL, you didn't remove the plastic cover of the metal cover rudder (it helps people not get injured by the sharp rudder!)... so you had bad steering and no cooling to motor or esc. Nice!! Keep doing your thing! It's hilarious! But next time when you get a SonicWake V2 get that rudder cover out ! :) 10:07" and 10:50" shows it! And Boats to steer more need to had the turn fins at 90º...manuals says to have them at 45º...but who reads and go by the books? They are wrong also, most of the times...made by an employe Friday afternoon at 5pm that just want to go home...and make copy paste of the chinese writting to translate and delivers the work done at 5:05pm...And reversin on a boat destroys completly the shaft since the shaft have orientation...in this case to the left! If the shaft spins to the right (reverse) it will brake! It can handle only very SMALL very small reverse throotle input to survive! That's facts of rc boating in any BOAT...not just this one! Finally at the end of the video i saw you removed the cover at 11:14" :) NICE! lol
You need to get the Miss Geico Zelos 36, it is way faster than the Sonic, and it steers hell of a lot better. Watercooling looks epic because the stream exits on top of the boat.
And As you tried to launch it into the air, the geico will do that if you just hit full throttle from a stand still.
Jumps about half a meter into the air if you just pull full throttle.
Hey, Kev. I really like that you're posting videos of boats now. Just a friendly piece of advice though, you need to put some tape on the hatch to keep the water out of the inside of the boat, in case it flips over. It's usually sold as "hatch tape" at hobby stores, or you can also just buy "hockey sock tape at sporting goods stores.
Theres more planes in the sea than subs on the moon .

The rudder is out of position.. it's half up, it does that when it gets hit to keep it from breaking.. ya need to push it back into position 😉 it'll work good if it's where it's supposed to be also, take the jacket off the rudder you're blocking the cooling intake ports..... Ah there you go, finally lol... And are(n't) there speed settings on the remote?

Also because this boat is a self writing boat you need to turn under power. It doesn’t have low speed turning capabilities. It’s really made for open water.

I have a Question.
I have got myself an arrma kraton 8s and on the first run the motor and lipo batteries were getting very hot and i dont know if its normal for 8s because i only had a 3s and a 4s monstertruck and i dont know if the car or batteries are faulty. The lipos i am using are 2 Gens ace 4s 5000mah 60c 14,8V and those came with the car itself.
I dont have anything to measure the temperature but i thought its getting too hot. Could someone help me please?🤷🏻♂️

Hey kev!!! That small boat had the guts but no clip retention for the important part!! The large one showed some potential but needed a lot of space to turn. Maybe if you cut down the two extra stabilizers it would help. Great vid, keep them coming!!!
These boats only perform once on plane. It's turns like absolute garbage when you're going slow but once you get up on plane it's ridiculous.

Also pro tip for boats, balancing the boats and also adjusting the prop angle and plane angle helps a lot with balance, steering and speed, AND TAKE THE COVER OFF THE RUDDER BECAUSE THEY ARE WATER COOLED AND THE WATER INTAKE IS THROUGH THE RUDDER
Thanks for the video, I feel like a fool but didn't know that Rubber part on the rudder came off. I thought it was made to help keep the rudder safe.

I have an older pro-boat impulse, it has been upgraded with a large leopard hobby motor and a 180a hobbywing esc and a heavy duty flexdrive. The water has to be like glass to run it. I tapped a small piece of styrofoam to the lid so it wont sink if it pops off. put the GPS in a clear plastic ziplock bag and tape the bag to the top of the boat.
What’s your steering rate turned at? Mine will just about flip itself hard lock turn. One of the adjustments on the remote is for steering also has 50/75/100 power.
I just bought the new impulse which is the brother boat, 32”, 55mph I believe, is more expensive but it has spectrums SMART tech so you don’t burn out your batteries
that's the lamest self righting "technology" I've ever seen, it works by flooding the hull on one side anytime the boat is stationary. I bet it's still fun but for that cost I want it to be perfect.
I have a proboat stealthwake and converted it to 6s with a 1650kv 3674 motor. It's stupid fast but the torque makes the boat lean so it can't go straight. Anyone know how to avoid this?
Kev just let you know if you adjust the trim tabs and get a new prop you will gain like 10mph and Grease the propellant shaft every 20 minutes of run time or it will over heat I had A first generation sonicwake and I didn’t grease it and I literally destruct itself. Also the steering is really bad to left right steering is good
