Jujutsu Kaisen is ending in 5 chapters - and this all feels very familiar. I wanted to lend my perspective as a long-time Bleach fan who experienced something very similar almost 10 years ago. How do you feel about JJK ending so soon? What do you think will happen in the final chapters? Let me know!

It's not just Bleach, they did it with Hitman Reborn and they tried to do it with Gintama as well. In the case of Gintama, the author is a massive troll and he wound up driving them crazy by continuing to kick the ending down the road.

With the recent chapter revealing 1 of Sukuna's fingers still remains, people have theorised that Nobara would use Resonance to make Sukuna's control over Megumi weak enough for Yuji to cut the connection between them. That this is the real reason why Yuji used Domain Expansion at this point where Sukuna would be at his weakest and Megumi would fight back.
Which ngl is kinda beautiful in a way. Gojo's students picking up where he left things off and clutching the victory against Sukuna, proving that Gojo's path was the right one in contrast Sukuna's and showing that the new gen of sorcerers is gonna be alright after all. Nobara being revealed to be alive and well wouldn't be jarring as it would complete the trifecta of 1st years.
Honestly, it wouldn't be jarring at all. Not when you compare it to the YuJo brain swap which I'm still surprised made very little impact on the story.

I still remember when we found out Bleach was ending in just five chapters. I couldn’t believe it. how was Kubo supposed to tie everything up with so little time? When I heard about JJK ending, Bleach immediately popped into my mind, but there’s a big difference here. Kubo was really under the gun, pushed by all sorts of pressures, and you could tell things were rushed even before the announcement.
But with Gege, it feels like this is really his call. He’s been telling us for a while that the end was coming. Five chapters still feels wild to me, how can he possibly wrap things up in so few? But at least it seems like it’s his decision, not something he’s being forced into.

I honestly think it's unfair to even compare those two situations. Prior to 1000 Year Blood War, Bleach, unlike JJK which only had Shibuya (and Hidden Inventory) , had several arcs, characters and story aspects which made it so good. And Kubo wasn't happy with how it ended but was forced to by his publisher. Gege on the other hand takes so many brakes (some because of his health), wasted so many characters/plot points at times on purpose at times because he doesn't know any better and most importantly made it clear, that he managed to make the ending HE himself wanted. He never rushed himself because he never intended to include more lore or world building in his series because he didn't bother on one hand and didn't know any better on the other hand. He rather focused on fights and memes. Which is straight up garbage, in my opinion. So he didn't "rush" anything as this is how he evnisioned the ending. People should just realize that this guy simply isn't as good of an author as they originally thought. Nobara only existed because of the intervention of an editor and apparently his first vision of JJK was the Culling Game with even less plot...Kubo and Bleach may also had its flaws at times but atleast he gave us more than whatever TF Gege gave his audience and tried to redeem himself with the anime. I don't think Gege wants to do the same as he seems more than happy to move on from the series. So that means one hand you have someone who, at this point, couldn't care less about his story, his characters and desperately tries to move on while the other one loved his series, was forced to rush it but redeemed himself with the anime where he can finally end it the way HE wanted it. So while you get Gege's ending in the manga, you'll get Kubo's in the anime.

Your argument for the merger really on point, something that I have a hard time trying to explain to people why if it didn't happen, it'll be bad.
The merger is basically just like your run off the mill "big bad guy win=end of the world, therefore must prevent". So if it didn't happen, it's actually fine. But when - as you said - Sukuna doesn't even come close to actually do the merger, it kind of a wasted potential, a chekhov's gun that is not triggered, a set up that never actually happen.
Other than Bleach's example, I think FMAB can also be an example. In FMAB, Father devise a plan to turn people in Amestris into philosopher stone to obtain god, he did go with the plan and it did happen, until Hohenheim prevent it by reversing the process mid way and giving back Amestris people's souls to their owner. The merger didn't happen will be as if all of Father's plan to turn Amestris people into philosopher stone just got yoinked out before it could even remotely began, it'll be extremely unsatisfying.
We need to at least see half the potential of what merger could do, the process of it happening, and the further implication if it did happen and successful.

Sukuna doesn’t have the lofty plans of world domination or human evolution like Kenjaku does. He simply cares about power. It makes sense that Sukuna didn’t use the merger. That’s why Kusikabe literally stated that so long as Kenjaku was dealt with, they, could deal with Sukuna later, since until he got the merger, he wasn’t nowhere near the threat Kenny was as Sukuna just lives to do what he wants.

It's more about the out-universe reason, more about how Gege write his story.
The merger is a set up by Gege as the writer of JJK, he made that up. When you already set up something, people expect you to at least deliver it to a certain degree, which I argue if it didn't happen at all, it'll be unsatisfying. Now just like I (and MrTommo alluded), it doesn't need to actually be successful. It can just be half the way in but then got stopped by our protagonists. Because if that happen, at least the set up that Gege had planned actually happen rather than just seemingly going nowhere.

With kubo you could tell it was rushed and that there was so much missing from the final arc, so much lore and scenes that were left out. For JJK it feels like gege isn't sure how to tie everything together. I'm not saying he cant do it in the last 5 chapters, but then he's gonna need to compress and condense alot of things

@@mouseofharry1703 yeah and I know this is kind of a hot take, but I feel like JJK didn't even have this issue until Yuji got his big moment
Like if Sukuna had lost to Jacob's Ladder, it would've made every single thing that happened prior feel like setup to that conclusion, which imo would've worked. Instead, now everything kind of feels like it was just filler, with Gege just doing things he think should happen but not knowing how to make it all matter.

This is the best way to put it. Gege has long struggled to tie the disparate elements of his story and characters together, and it's absolutely killed JJK. Now, he's ending it right as the plot finally had some clarity and focus, which goes to show he probably still didn't have much of an idea of how to end things.

It wasn't looking like there was going to be a next arc anyway and it felt that way to me for about a year and a half. Jjk is at an all time high popularity wise, i really think gege just decided this is where he's stopping now. Maybe for a sequel series setup or maybe because he is finished with this story. Right now in jjk all the stakes are on the outcome of this fight. There's nothing more but a few epilogue chapters in it. Kubo was legit just starting to pay off on the setup he worked so hard for.

I'm honestly not sure what made me think of this, something about you saying Gege is going to end the series the way "he" wants, but:
I think a really cool idea for a series ending would be something where the series already contained some time-travel-esque elements to it, and the creator ends the series off exactly how they intended to from the beginning, regardless of the fan's opinions or desires.
THEN, years later, they revive the IP by introducing some of the previously mentioned time-travel shenanigans, and keep pumping out more content for the series, almost like canon 'What If' endings.
In this way, the hypothetical series could technically cater to everyone's wishes, but the creator gets to tell the exact story they wanted to first, from start to finish, and then just kind of adds to the top/middle of it later to appease various groups in their fandom.

I'm actually on quite a different opinion from you Tommo, I don't think there needs to be some dramatic final moment where Sukuna almost wins I think Gege might actually be going for something more sad and subtle
Sukuna throughout this entire final arc has already proven how easy it is for him to turn things around if the right opportunity presents itself and now yuji has this surefire way to beat him and I think he will
As for how I think it'll end, I think we'll see Sukuna's defeat and then a very short time skip giving us all the living characters pov's and the conclusion of those we think are deceased along with a conclusion to Urame's fight
I just keep seeing everyone say it's gonna be a bad rushed ending purely because of my hero and Aot's ending like come on people have faith in Gege he has said he's had the ending written for a very long time now and he's not the type of author to be influenced by fans to change the ending like Aots author and he also isn't the type of author to just have straight up moments of bad writing before ending the series like my hero's it sounds like he has something satisfied and planned out for us and ykw? I’m so glad that Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba has ended and not being dragged on. I have the same feeling about Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s a good thing it’ll end. I don’t have access to Jump magazine and so I’m not on the latest chapter. But I read the manga as they’re published and I do feel the fight with Sukuna has been a bit dragged out. Like HxH author gave his ending last year. Sometimes writers don't know where to take their story. Gege choosing to end it is a combination of him not knowing where to take the story plus Shonen Jump editors probably realising the constant 2 years of Sukuna cycle is going down hill. I mean, Gege couldn't even use Hakari vs Uruame properly. That fight was used as plot device for Uruame to say "He's not even trying"

"Kenjaku deserved better" is a lie, that guy deserved so much worse. I think there's still a chance for flashbacks/backstory though, since Yuji's Domain Expansion seems like a memory lane effect; if it lets him explore the memories of Sukuna (which is possible, since it already let him get that glimpse of Megumi) then we might see a bit of his past before it ends.
The presence of the finger fuels the Nobara copium flames, but for those that are sure she's dead and gone: her grandmother, the one that taught her that technique, is still alive afaik. If Nobara's alive (whether barely hanging on or recovered), or if her grandma's pissed enough to enter the fray, the Soul Resonance attacks (previously shown to wreck Mahito because they only need a piece to damage the whole being) are likely to play a key role in the final chapters

I personally have no problem with how Kenjaku died as I felt it was a fitting karmic way for him to go. For someone who freely ended the lives of so many with the intent to end countless more without consideration for their own wishes and dreams it seemed fitting that he should be cut down just as abruptly while denied the chance to see his own goals played out. I think a lot of people disregard the human element of the story which is what Yuji has been fighting for and has believed in this whole time. Each of those deaths was a story cut short for seemingly no good reason and it is the villain's inability to see the tragedy in what they are taking away with their actions that is the driving problem. So yeah, TLDR: Not sad Kenjaku died how he did, he had it comin' and Sukuna does too.

But yeah, I do like that the heroes winning means the end of the world DOESN'T happen.
Sukuna is also very close, if he wins this fight, the Merger will happen, but also the merger was more Kenjaku's crazy idea, Sukuna is the focus, not ther merger, and I'm ok with that.
In terms of a Sukuna backstory, I'm actually split on it, because I wonder how much explaining the thing that is Sukuna would help and how much would result in him just losing his mystery.
Harari vs Uraume... yeah not gonna defend that lol, it is weird that it's been off screen completely. I actually suspect they are still in deadlock, but Uraume will give up with Sukuna's death since that's all she lives for.

I’m actually kinda optimistic about this ending, I feel like ending in 5 chapters while not ideal could work well. To compare it to bleach I’d say the point when it was announced that bleach was ending the fight had barely just begun meaning it ended up rather anticlimactic whereas in Jjk it feels as if the fight has advanced a lot more and could feasibly be over in 5 chapters. The other thing I’d say is that comparatively jjk focuses more on using text to tell its story where as bleach focuses on using imagery meaning that jjk can squeeze more story content onto each page on average. And finally because jjk simply has a smaller world and cast compared to bleach there isn’t as much that needs to be accounted for in the epilogue. Don’t get me wrong tho 5 chapters is still a very tight frame so I’m not completely sure of this.

It did a lot of things that might initially rub people the wrong way as a knee-jerk reaction because it was trying to be subversive of our expectations, of shonen expectations, and that doesn't mean it's wrong or bad. It is different and trying to do things in a way we're not used to and avoid stuff that we do technically make fun of as tropes despite expecting them every single time. While it is sad to see such a good story end. It is also nice to know that because it’s done, the rest of the anime won’t have to split up such a long arc into 2 seasons to avoid catching up with the material.

I read the first 60 chapters of JJK and I really just couldn't get into it, the power system just seemed too wishy washy to me and I never really gave a crap about any of the characters. However, I have been following the release since the start of the final battle in hopes that it would make me want yo go back and read the rest, and it hasn't. I'm perfectly fine with JJK getting a rushed ending because the story was that great to begin with. Bleach, however, deserved at least another 6 months to flesh out the endgame properly because there were so many characters that I actually did want to see more elaborate backstories/bankai for.

JJK has always made odd choices, and it's something I've grown to love, but the news was hard to hear. If I didn't know any better, I would say it's Gege trolling and setting up a part 2 sort of thing, but realistically, that's probably not gonna happen. I just don't see it ending in 5 chapters and feeling satisfied.......and Hikari's fight possibly getting offscreened. That one would sting.

I was hoping to have a backstory on Yuji' parents, Backstory on Kenjaku and Sukuna in the Heian era, an explanation on the creation of Yuji by Kenjaku, and I'm also disappointed on Kenjaku's fate, for me he was the Aizen mastermind of the Story, and he died just like any cursed spirit, I was waiting for a backstory of him and his journey to this point, and absolutely nothing

Gege being sick is eerily similar to the way Kubo was sick before the ending of Bleach.

The moment when Sukuna defeats Gojo for the second time is the Ywhabach flooding the Seretei equivalent. It's an easy miss with just how long this one fight has been.

Bush camping is often an effective but looked down upon strategy.. respect to yuta for not arriving in front of kenjaku and challenging him 1v1

I could be forgetting something but I don't remember sukuna ever expressing that he really cared about doing the merger I thought it was just kinchaku gave him the power to do it and he almost is forced to because of the rules of the Cullen games

We have Season 3 and likely a Season 4 in the mix. Likely with the ending of the manga, there’s room for improvement and expanding the material to give a proper conclusion
