Only Caveat could box with Ali, interview Gore Vidal without making an enemy, and be friends with Janis Joplin while having a drink with Brando. He is one in a million and I don't believe he has ever received the credit he deserves. Brains, humor, class....love him to bits.

Actually that's what was so great about Cavett's show - it was so unhurried. He asked interesting questions and gave his guests plenty of time to give interesting answers. Maybe the closest talk show now might be Graham Norton I suppose? But Norton is a lot more humour-based.

Cavett is the most underappreciated tv icon in American history. I'm surprised he still does these interviews. It's beneath him, but I'm glad he does.
I use to watch the Dick Cavett show when I was in high school. I always liked his relaxed unbiased and respectful approach to questioning his quests... a class act.
Cavett is the bomb diggity! Legendary. One of the most intelligent interviewers *ever* in media history, bar none. He teased out some features of people others didn't or couldn't. And how cool is it you're talking boxing? 💃🙆
I completely agree. You knew when you saw him interview someone, he was going to connect with them, and they would get really excellent questions - sometimes tough, but always fair, and that he genuinely wanted to get to know them. He never seemed to have to manufacture interest. If someone was on his show, he was interested in them. His wit was so sharp, too. Clever turns of phrases, self-deprecating humor, etc.
Muhammad Ali is still sorely missed, a great man with a great mind. 💙💙💙
And a great sense of humor. A hero of my youth for sure.
Change the speed to 1.25x and Cavett sounds as good as he did back in the day. 😃

Cavett's interview with Orson Wells is an all time favorite. The legends he knew and interviewed. I can see why Colbert appreciated his substantive interviews. He carries on the tradition but at a faster pace.
He really never had to interview Orson. Orson would just get up there and talk all night. One of my favorites to watch as well. He told stories like you were there remembering it with him.

Dick Cavett deserves a one hour interview just about his life and all the amazing people he interviewed over the years.

My brother met Ali in New Orleans. He is 5’10.”
Ali let him take a few photos of them “ boxing” and you just can’t imagine how big Ali looked next to my brother! Ali was his hero!

Dick Cavett has always been so real and treaded on subjects others wouldn't dare interview about. He was outside society's conditioning

Handsome, cute, charming, brutally intelligent but always ready to break the ice with silly. His gestures and facial expressions in that clip really took me back to junior high and high school watching him with my mom. Stephen is right-- a great lineage to aspire to.

His interviews with Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Groucho Marx, Orson Welles, Salvador Dali and so many others are timeless. I wish I hadn’t seen all episodes a million times so that I could watch them again. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll do it anyway ♥️🔥

Without a doubt, Cavett had more classic moments and conversations with celebrities and intellects than any other "Talk Host." Unmatched. and often brilliant and always interesting. 50-60 years.

Cavett is the greatest of my generation. Known for his wit and being articulate. Ali was my hero and still is.
I could listen to this for hours!! Im not the only nerd who watched Dick when I was a child.....Kate Hepburn is one of my favs!! Thank goodness for RUclips where you can find these incredible interviews...... His show is a treasure trove of History....xo

I hope I'm in that kind of shape when I'm 84. .... Cavett is the deepest vessel of Modern Culture. .... He should produce one more episode of The Dick Cavett Show in which HE is the only guest. ... and make it 7 hours long.
I got to say, for some times RUclips recommended snippets of the Dick Cavett Show for me, so I just knew this man from those old videos. It's the first time I see how he looks like in 2020. It's kind of scary to see how old we get. It's the same feeling when I saw how Robert Plant looks like nowadays, after a long time only watching Led Zeppelin videos from the 70s.

GOD the Dick Cavett show still to this day is the best talk show in late night in terms of impactful conversations. The man is a national treasure.

You experience something like mental whiplash when impulsively clicking from a '70s-era Cavett interview to this 2020 Colbert appearance with an 84-year-old Dick. My God, Father Time is undefeated!
Sensesence aside, it shows great generosity of spirit for Colbert to have a long-retired Mr. Cavett on his program. Writing for his NT Times column in 2013 or thereabouts, when it became apparent Letterman was not long in throwing in the towel as host of "The Late Show," Dick notably took it upon himself to champion Stephen as the worthy and obvious successor to Dave. I'm gladdened to see Stephen didn't forget Dick's support and encouragement!
In a decade or so, America will run out of living legends.
Hopefully we are minting new legends.....

Stephen Colbert has found his element...long live the king of late night comedy.
Nahhhhh the king of late night comedy should be able to interview anyone... He had some interviews were it was really awkward and he didn't know what to do...
I prefer Colbert! But none have matched the master, Carson! Cavett started as a writer on Carson. The thing I miss about Carson is his guests being we're more diverse. Opera, political writers, novelists, actors, and common people that he never disrespected like Letterman used too. Now shows have 2 actors and some band never heard of past the east or west coasts, most of the time. He has a great band with Jon, but don't showcase them. What would The Tonight show have been without Skitch Henderson or Doc Severson? Leno had Kevin and Letterman had Paul. But all east coast shows only play toward the east coast. Carson was more nation wide to inform and introduce the country to the richness of the Arts. Can you imagine a famous person just doing a "walk on" with any of these talk shows like Carson had?

Two legends with different styles, one who's made history, and one yet to make history. Something tells me this is gonna make history.
I met Muhammad Ali, at his estate, round Christmas time. He was so very charming, down to earth, and generous. He was also very handsome, and a total gentleman.
Cavett looks amazingly youthful and well for his advanced age...Incredibly well, really.
I envy mr. Cavett with meeting such great men like Muhammad Ali.
He also met my great hero Groucho Marx.
I hope Dick will be among us for a long time.

Loved the Dick Cavett Show, and loved his columns for the New York Times. I remember his story about meeting Stan Laurel after finding him listed in the phone book. So DC knew Laurel as well as Groucho. Pretty amazing career and life he's had.

Cavett/Ali interviews where my favourite
Dick Cavett was a breath of fresh air. And he still is.
I am a student of desk humour, and while Dave saved my tumultuous adolescence and is in many ways my favorite, I love Dick Cavett above all others. Whwn I was young, tv was still a thing and so old stuff still got celebrated here and there. I grew up with that. I fear the youngest generations are completely detached from where we came from together...and that may be the same fact that severs them from where we were planning on going.
What a pure spirit.
I used to watch dick cavett back in late 60s and 70s. He always had the most interesting people on his show. I remember Hendrix and Janis. So cool.
i discoverd Dick Cavett through RUclips these past few years, and watched a lot of his old interviews with Ali, Orsen Wells, and others. Amazing to go from one of those interviews to this one, and see the same man 40 years later. You can tell how appreciative he is of getting interviewed by Colbert here. He probably understood that for many people like me, it was the first time we've seen him since he had his own show, decades ago.
I am so sad that this is the first time I'm ever seeing Mr. Cavett, today. The years I've missed...
I would also like to say that this sort of KIND personality seems way too sparse these days; you only find it in older people that have a certain CLASS about them. Dignity! ♥
I always loved him, he gave the comencement address at my graduation in 1982 at UNL. He is an example of how cool people from Nebraska are! Johnny Carson, Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, list goes on and on!

Dick Cavett was incredibly erudite and sophisticated. Even now watching old shows, the incredible interviews he did. He let people talk, elaborate, tell stories. Phenomenally interesting. This interview was wonderful because he was being honored. Only it was too short, too rushed, and it didn't really show Cavett in the best light because of that. He has very different timing than Colbert is the problem. Cavett always talked a bit more slowly, was thoughtful in his communication and would leave space between words. Stephen stepped on his lines too much. I feel sorry for Colbert because his interview format is so so short, and it feels a bit frantic.
I grew up watching Cavett and totally agree. He knew how to let people tell their stories. Class act interviewer. And I adored his friendship and rapport in interviews with Richard Pryor, who is still one of my favorites of all time.

That was such a great documentary - I kept it on my DVR for a long time and watched it several times. The rapport they had was as admirable if not more so than the one Ali had with Howard Cosell.

Mr. Cavett's show should be required watching for anyone aspiring to host a late night talk show. The man was a maestro of mixing people from disparate backgrounds and ideologies, bringing them together on his show, and making it work to spellbinding effect. Sadly, those traits aren't valued anymore; all people do now is appear tp promote some project of dubious value. Discourse is dead...

I swear, I saw an interview where Dick blushed and said that he "may or may not have" slept with Janis... it was clear that he was in love with her in this interview. And if you watch the clip of him interviewing her, you might start to notice a really intense chemistry now that I mentioned this ;-)
