    I personally use the izotope imager on each channel before I apply any effects and split the sound into bands, this way I have full control of the channels width in any of part of its frequency response. The issue with using a plugin such as "wider" is the plugin will make the whole sound wider and perhaps you just want to make the high mids of the sound slightly wider. Great tutorial Jon and well explained

    Q&A: Do you recommend to aquire vintage gear upon new gear?, do you think that modern technology is not competitive with vintage sounds of general equipments (like racks, synths, etc)?

  • @tomaszdeputat3004
    @tomaszdeputat3004 3 года назад

    Very basic but powerful. I tend to use it as little as possible because of the mono compatibility. Instead of sample delay I double the track that I want to be wider and tweak the timing of the phrases together with a timbre/eq of the duplicate. Hard pan L and R each track and you'll end up with wider sound but also a lot more "intense" than just "delayed" one. It's super common in rock music but works everywhere.

    "Q & A" - 1 . Is it always necessary to compress vocals if the vocalist has sung it dynamicaly well and nothing is clipping.
    2. Do you pitch correct vocals yourself, if yes which plugin do you use?
    3.can you do a tutorial on mixing and mastering a song only using logics stock plugins?

    • @heroforest
      @heroforest 3 года назад

      I know you're not asking me, but still:
      1. The more consistent the singer, the less compression you need, but realistically, for the vast majority of genres you need at least some light compression to achieve a 'professional' sound. Maybe, maaaayyybe you can get away without mixing classical music or jazz, but even there is usually compressed. But in EDM almost definitely.
      2. There are tons of alternatives. If you want natural sounding results, Melodyne is the industry leader (And for good reason).
      3. .. I obviously can't answer that :D

    • @jessinrodenburg7728
      @jessinrodenburg7728 3 года назад

      Do as the song needs. you're not obligated to always compress, if it's good without compression, then don't compress :) On the other hand, you want the vocal to be in front, so if it's good, you might even want a tiny bit of compression. Still, do as the song needs.
      Melodyne is used a lot
      There already are a few good tutorials on this, for example with ableton stock plugins.

    How about using Chorus for widening, or midside eq'ing, e.g. cutting the bass in the mid to make the high frequency stuff go wide in the sides? I mean, slapping sample delay on everything, doesn't that make everything too wide? E.g. maybe you want to limit the width to fill out the stereo spectrum?

    It's true, this technique does work and John Christian uses the same technique when putting every instrument in its own space. One thing to be careful of though is that you don't put everything delayed to the left for example because it can make your mix sound unbalanced.

    Q and A: yo man i only started producing like 6 months ago and i have trouble with knowing how loud to make my instruments in a track and i understand the basic mixing so far but when i play it all together something is always to quiet or not as clear as i want it and this might be aslo because i have a trash laptop and cant play everything altogether so i try my best to mix it by muting some instruments while listening to others. Do you have any tips on how to properly volume-adjust the elements in your track? keep up the content btw i learned so much since starting to watch you.
