Breeding shrimp is so interesting. They don't follow genetics like fish do. The layering of colors is what I find interesting. Some lines revert back to the wild type when you mix them, some do not. Fascinating little critters. 👍💕👍
@@Fishtory of course mate but enough for the average hoobyist to get a basic understanding and to pique the interest of those wanting to explore it deeper. I bet your video has encouraged folk to embark along that journey and equipped them with some basic directions to set off.
@@DanielKeepingFish For real! Alex is an inspiration, and if I have more questions after a video (rarely, lol!) down the rabbitfish hole I go. The market is pretty saturated with shrimp here, but that means I can get almost anything for $1-$3 per shrimp... I'm doing a rainbow flag in no tech, shrimp, eco-vases!!
This is so interesting! I took notes of what it was said in this video. Its because I was looking for explanation for the mutations I have in my tanks. For me it started with one! surviving pair of blue diamonds (out of 5) in my tank in february this year. In 8 months now I have around 300-400 shrimps. I was searching for the names of the different mutations I have. So for now Im selectively breeding from what Ive got ones those 8 months: -black rose -blue diamond -blue dream (they are so incredibly beautiful) -carbon rili -blue carbon rili Some of the mutations are sp beautiful for ex. cabon rili with clear patches on the head etc. Do you think once I stabilize these lines, I could try and sell them as true lines? Thank you for explaining all this 🙂
Hi, it is wery interesting. Is some posibility how get blue rili with red head and tail? Which two shrimps would you mix? I know, the best way would be to buy them, but in Czech Republic keep nobody them. Thanks for your idea.
Probably red rilis and blue rilis? I'm honestly not sure, but I'm assuming if they both have the rili traight. It's more likely to remain expressed vissually. Although I've had both blue dreams and bloody Mary's turn into dark dark redish blue and sky blue center rili-s before also... so it all depends on what genes are happen back in the breeding lines too
@@Fishtory Yes! I just put some pure light blue jelly / rili in with some dark blue velvet (I think) and interested to see what potential offspring look like - amazed to find your thorough video, many thanks!
They should stay black over 85% or 90% of the babies...otherwise it's not a truly "clean line" aka "true line", however if you mix them with another color neocaridina and wait to see the offspring- you may get some surprises.
@@Fishtory I mixed blues and chocolates and got loads of blacks which I assume are the black "rose" variant. I keep them separately and I get mostly black but they occasionally throw out blues and reds (Bloody Marys?)
@@dr8576 so they came from that shoko/bloody mary line... they were so red, and dark that having blue shell over red flesh looked black...most black/carbons are actually blue or red if you look carefully (kind of a gasoline shimmer...or wait till one dies)
They'll probably give you more blue jellies but you're going to find diversity in pigmentation and occasionally you'll get other coloration or distribution patterns, depending on a lot of circumstances. It also depends on how stable your line is. Think of it like how two parents with dark hair can sometimes have a child with blond or red hair - those familial traits can combine and emerge/re-emerge, even if the two parents in question don't present with that particular trait. There's a good chance that they're going to have dark haired offspring but genetics sometimes throws out a curveball too.
Got a question! What's the term for that organic layer that contains micro crustaceans again? That layer found in the wild that fish like otocinclus and shrimp like to eat. Aw... aufuats? I cant recall the term haha
I have a group with red and blue rili shrimp that have several offspring that are translucent and don't have any red or blue color. I don't see how this could happen given the breeding chart you have shown.
Shrimp can go back to the wild stage at anypoint its all still hidden in their genes. Even a solid line can throw clear or tan shrimps once in a while.. you gotta remove them if you dont want more
My blue dreams from flip aquatics have been pretty true. I have gotten two wild types that are mostly clear with rusty red markings. And some of the black areas on the blue dreams even show like a dark rusty red color in the black.
@@Fishtory To maintain the blue line would you cull all the red out of the population in one generation, or do you space out the culling over multiple generations? Like when you rejuvanate a shrub by taking out 1/3rd old branches a year over 3+ years?
So new to the hobby and I have some blue dreams and a couple of my females were baring eggs well now that the babies have gotten bigger I now have red rills, red blue rolls and blue rills is that normal?
@@nikohylfardanesh4843 then it's normal. You'll want to keep one color at a time in most tanks, unless you don't mind the colors being all random and mixed up (over time they usually end up clear or brown like wild neocaridina)
I have blue drama and blue rili in separate tanks right now. But I was considering combining them. My guess is I’d eventually eat more blue rili. Am I wrong in thinking this?
It depends if they came from the same line... if they're super light pale blue vs royal or navy blue then they likely aren't from the same wild phenotype and would make a mix of the colors for a while and after a few generations they'd get more clear and brown and wild looking. But if they're both the same hue of blue color, they should make more rili looking babies eventually.
@@Fishtory interesting! They’re both dark. In fact, some of my blue dreams are close to black. I’m going to keep them separated for now. But it was a thought I had.
Timely videeo release. How did you know i have been researching this topic? Timing could not been any better. Do you do keywords research for video topics?
Bruh, the planaria ,what do you do to get rid of them? I have them in my cherry shrimp tank and I have scuds to ,the scuds murder my plants.whats your thoughts on fixing those issues, or how would you deal with them??? Tia
I usually toss a small sparkling gouramis, honey courami, badis or (pea puffer in if the shrimp can be moved for a few days)... But using some dog dewormer works too... levamisol and metronidazole or flubendizole....then look up the dosage for tank size....note- jt will kill any and all snails also
So What water conditions do you keep your neo's in? Temp, Hardness, and PH? Do you use any salt or specialty gravels for shrimp? Thanks! For putting this up very good vid.
I have a whole bunch of videos discussing that...if you search through my videos on shrimp, you can find info for about a dozen lines for care or breeding info
I like the colors you achieved but I wonder if some others are trying to breed that out of the shell but you are adding it in. Is there any consensus on what the colors should be or at least what colors not to mix. Maybe Green Acqua wouldn’t be happy that you changed their shrimp or perhaps “ruined” it. J/k...They all are cool 😎
I currently have some blue rili shrimp in my tank. I want to add some blue dreams to my tank. Will the offspring of the blue rili and blue dream all be approximately some version of blue? Or will they start to go back to red/pink or other colours? Thanks!
They should make speckled, striped and or lighter blue shrimp, along with some normal rilis for the first few generations. Then it may get a bit more speckled and transparent looking, but as long as you aren't crossing red rilis with blue dreams, or blue velvet palamatas with neocaridina Davidi blue dreams, you should be fine
I just got into shrimp. I have all ND. I have blue velvet female, a chocolate female, I have about 6 cherry I have all the grades shown on the chart. I have male that looks very close to the wild color. I also have Amano shrimp as well, no I have not mixed these shrimps. I'm sure the Amano shrimp wouldnt be nice.
Amano shrimp usually don't hurr the neocaridina shrimp much. They will, however- overtake them at feeding time...plus they're known to crawl out of the tank frequently
