My buddy has a big rig…he does long haul…his Freightliner has an N14 Cummins and he bought it new and does all his own light mechanic work and maintenance…he’s an absolute freak when it comes to maintenance…these rigs will go 20,000-30,000 miles on an oil change…he did his every 15,000 with Esso XD3 when they made it and then went to Mobile 1…he put a quart of ATF in every oil change and a quart in the fuel tank when he filled up…after about 2 million miles without putting a wrench on it the engine was starting to get a little tired so he took it to Cummins to rebuild it…they wanted $30k to rebuild it but couldn’t believe the mileage on it and figured this was at least its second…he said he never touched the engine so they called Cummins Corporate and Cummins offered him a brand new long block crate engine for the same price if he would give them his old engine so they could do a tear down on it to try and figure out how it lasted so long…so that’s a testament to how important maintenance is!..change your oil people!!

@@ronaldrussell5481 he also doesn’t drive the truck hard which helps a lot too…I worked with a guy in Alberta who drove a heavy spec Kenworth winch truck and it had a 575 Cat in it and it was coming up on its bearing roll-in schedule which was likely 500,000-750,000 kms, and he took it straight to Cat and the mechanic dropped the pan and pulled the cape and measured the main bearing clearance on all of them and he said they were all the same as new bearings and so there was no point in replacing new with new so he buttoned it up and told him to keep doing what he was doing…I couldn’t tell you his oil change intervals but he was definitely a fanatic about his truck and one other important point he told me was he never drove faster than 90km/hr…so driving habits also increases engine longevity as well…a new engine today is gonna run a fella close to $50k these days so it’s probably a good idea to consider taking car of your rig!

I finished the job anyway as preventative maintenance since the engine had high mileage. I did all the work myself and it was very labor intensive, but I saved over a thousand dollars doing it myself even with using all OEM parts. This definitely makes it evident why Dave’s shop stands out from the rest
Had to replace the engine on my fathers 2011 Impala
Our budget wasn’t the best so we went with the lowest bidder
You would think that common sense says clean the replacement engine and check it for leaks and damages (simply bc the maintenance history is unknown)
Well don’t think that shop did that and I’m stuck with an engine that is leaking from somewhere and I am fed up with having to take it back and forth to the shop
Unfortunately for us we are in CA and budget wise we couldn’t make the trip to Dave’s shop to have them do the job
I’m simply going to try to cut my losses and sell the car to someone who has some mechanical expertise and fix the leak issue

I love the videos Dave, but I will take a 300 ci Ford straight 6 over any small block built today. The main difference in engine longevity is the better quality oil that is more accessible today. It's like the man who kissed a cow, everyone to his own taste. Keep up the good work, God bless.

What a waste of time and money. Junk yard motor is a junkyard motor. Complete rebuild of the original motor is the way to go. Unless it is trashed and cracked. Just shows you lazy maintenance Lazy cheap customer. I am an Old boy machinist watching a true professional that tells the truth. It’s too bad in today’s age no one has faith in the professional.

My company has a fleet of about 20 of these vans for our service techs. We have yet to have any motor issues, most last to about 250,000 miles before we sell them off. The only issues we’ve had with these vans is the front ends need to be rebuilt around every 90k miles. Too bad they don’t make them anymore.

Simple oil changes and these things will run 400k miles without batting an eye. We had a Nissan NV2500 parts van for my Toyota dealer that had 400k miles on it before we pulled it out of service. This thing never owed us a dime. We only ever put exhaust and suspension/brakes on it. We only used mobile one oil for it 👌

Sad to say, this was common at my Nissan dealer. I've never had the pleasure of replacing a 5.6L, but I've seen dozens in my time there. It's ridiculous how many customers expected their service advisors to attempt goodwilling an engine, despite the lack of maintenance.
The 3.5L, 3.7L, and the 5.6L were the ones that were always getting neglected and destroyed.

As an automotive tech I have made it a 100% habit that if I open the hood of a customers car I check the oil level. I don’t care if I’m doing a massive job or a simple battery change, if the cars in my possession I check the oil level and recommend if it’s nasty but at the very least I will make sure it’s topped off before leaving. I never want someone’s motor to lock up after leaving the shop because I didn’t take 60 seconds to check the oil. You would be amazed at how often you pull a dipstick and it’s bone dry

Someone who's been doing this a long time will get a lot of knowledge and experience but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll have lots of WISDOM to go with it! Your comment about keeping the old headgaskets was pretty profound. I'm coming up on 15 years in the trade and am kinda embarrassed that I never thought to do that... I'll carefully place them on the block and inspect holes to make sure I've got it on the proper bank and orientation but could easily miss a minor design change... That's scary to think about... Thanks for offering the little tips/tricks/nuggets of information you throw in these videos. That's why I watch them.

The 5.6 V8 in the Titan and Armada from 2004 until about 2019 ish were one of the best motor and trans combo known to man. The rear diff on Titans would get hot and cook the fluid but throw a vented diff cover on and you were good to go. Ive been with Nissan since 1999 and all I can say is quality is not the same since around 2007 and the CVT trans. 2.5l had issues with the egrless system taking out cats and rings.
