  • Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff | How To Measure and Are They Accurate ? | Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff
Wrist Blood Pressure cuffs are more convenient than the arm cuff, but at a cost. I'll tell you why, and then give my thoughts on whether they are worth it. For more videos about blood pressure measurement at home, check out this playlist: bit.ly/dkbpplaylist
In this video I compare how checking blood pressure with a wrist cuff can differ from that of a traditional upper arm cuff. This is important to blood pressure control, because the wrist blood pressure monitor accuracy is dependent on various factors. This is not a wrist blood pressure monitor review, but I did include a link to our favorite wrist blood pressure cuff below if you are interested!

Many of you have asked me to talk about blood pressure accuracy when it comes to the wrist blood pressure monitor vs arm cuff. The wrist blood pressure is not as accurate, and in this video we will talk about why, and then we will talk about whether they are still worth it.

Yes, I find the regular arm BP monitor so incredibly painful that I don’t use it regularly. The wrist ones are so much easier to use.

I’m in nursing school, and I’ve actually always been pretty health conscious. When I did my physical to get into school, my recorded BP was 128/88. I got a lil nervous because that seemed kind of high for a 29 year old female who tries to eat healthy and exercises consistently. I have a wrist cuff and decided to check mine, got a high reading, and was just anxious about my blood pressure altogether. But I watched your other video on good BP checking technique, followed that, and now I check my BP every day and on average, my readings are about 110/70. Crazy how much anxiety can affect a reading. Thank you for this useful info on how to take control of our health!

128/88 isn't anything to worry about. They keep lowering the numbers every year to the point that it's almost impossible for most people to hit them. Why, so they can put everyone on BP meds.

Ok, it is less accurate. But it will be great if you can give a rule of thumb, such as, grab your right shoulder, use your right hand to support the palm of your left hand while measuring, and the actual diastolic should be minus 3-5 from the shown value, etc.

Hi. I have anxiety issues and due to that I measure bp for multiple times in a row. Because my first few and sometimes many initial readings are high due to anxiety. Once I start measuring, I relax myself and then slowly my readings come back to normal. And doing all this on arm cuff can be painful sometimes and also makes me worried if it’ll damage my veins.. so wanted to know if wrist machine are better and easier measuring wise and do they inflate like arm cuffs or just read through the sensors?

Thanks for the useful info! What I really learned is that cuff monitors measure the angle of your arm (as you though you are sitting and raising your arm) but not truly how close it is to the level of your heart. I always measure when lying down (monitor is kept in my nightstand) and I usually take multiple readings until they seem to agree. If they have a tendency to read high, as the author states, it's better than giving one a false sense of security be reading low!

As a trained Biomedical Engineer ;and served as both in house and remote Engineer, I purchased a Vivitar BP monitor. Very high readings as compared to upper arm monitor. BP monitors are calibrated and verified on a cyclic timeframe by the in house engineer, and if calibration is out of tolerance adjusted to correct manufacture tolerances. Blood Pressure is an important part of your daily health. If you find readings too high or too low for yourself, please go to your local clinic and have it verified. Take your home BP monitor with you and verify it’s accuracy to the one the professionals are using at your clinic or hospital.

Thanks Dr. It’s reassuring to know that the wrist monitors giving slightly higher readings is a good thing to know. I use proper body positioning and technique to the letter with my wrist monitor. My bp may be slightly lower at the Dr.
Of course it never will be I’m sure. I feel so panicky when that boa constrictor squeezes my bicep that my heart starts pounding.
It’s good to know I can do 3 measures in 5 mins at home where I’m relaxed and take pics for the med staff.

I think the reason for a higher readings of wrist blood pressure monitors lies upon bending your arm which causes higher pressure of blood both Systolic and Diastolic.
It is similar to a hose when bent will increases pressure of the same volume of water both passing or returning through the bent part.

This is true most patients like the wrist blood pressure so they can do it themselves and help lessen the "white coat syndrome". Which is typical for some older patients. Its easy to use can be done alone unlike the Arm ones.

1:53 only measures angle. Measures different artery.
    2:53 some can be accurate.
As for upper brachial artery wrap measures:
Some upper arm measures in doctor office use wrong size arm wrap.
Some people have lots of loose skin on the back of their upper arm.
Question: Does extreme pain cause blood pressure to be high?
    Consider this:
If the higher end of wrap eventually starts to dig into the upper arm, its physical design and materials might not be ergonomic:
    - their edges can dig into blood vessels and nerves.
    - Does the direction of the brachial turn from bicep towards under arm?
    - Is the wrap designed to squeeze where the monitor takes the blood pressure reading?
    - Has wrap design included the upper fit as a secondary squeeze that might affect the brachial flow?
    - Or, back to the question, digging pain and maybe should be considered as reason upper arm blood pressure might be inaccurate as well. Yes, person has high blood pressure but was the pain disregarded in the design or protocols?

I think I will buy a wrist monitor next time I go shopping. But there needs to be some planning in order to get a verily accurate blood pressure reading. I'm not going to use my muscles the keep the arm at the right level. I will rest it on something so I won't have to use my muscles. I've got some sphygmomanometers that I use. The ones that I use now read very close to the same. So I will be comparing the wrist monitor with my sphygmomanometers. Great video.

Perhaps a subject for a different video but found you as searching for a related issue rarely discussed - using BP machine when also have a pacemaker. Researching to upgrade my older wrist BP machine that had excellent placement technique - finger on collar bone lays monitor directly over heart - that seems to be in disfavor now vs raising to heart level like you discussed and its issues. Just received a pacemaker and immediately though laying virtually on top of the pacemaker might not be a good idea...so upgrading. While I do travel, wrist would be more convenient, will probably shift to arm, but for either wrist or arm - which arm. While manufacture in direct correspondence assures units are tested and approved with pacemaker, no information anywhere related to using with pacemaker. Traditionally recommend using left arm, but with left insertion of pacemaker...should right arm be used? Such a learning curve...and virtually no videos exist addressing that issue.

Braun direct you to place your arm across your chest and support your elbow with you other hand so your left arm is relaxed
Wife was a nurse and still has her old manual pump cuff analogue gauge .
She has compared our cuff braun with her manual readings and its not far enough out that we should worry about the variation.

3o mins after you eat. In that time frame, no smoking or caffeine either. Water is good.
Sit in the chair and relax for 5 mins before you start. Your left elbow should be slightly bent , open your left hand, and make sure the device is level with your heart and tightened just under the crease at your lower palm and the two bony protrusions in the other side of your arm. Continue the deep breathing, with your feet flat on the floor and seated with your back supported by the chair.

And I have a ADC - AD76864111-BK-OS Pro's Combo II SR Adult Pocket Aneroid/Scope Kit with Prosphyg 768 Blood Pressure Sphygmomanometer and Adscope Sprague 641 Stethoscope and that gives me a different reading than the three Omrons but the Omron cuff is just off 2mmg compared to the doctors. Also people hav been saying that the ADC is not accurate either. I say that they should not sell any unless they are spot on.

Thank you for this video! I was planning on purchasing a wrist blood pressure monitor - the Omron 7 Series - but now I'm not certain. The thing is that I find the upper arm monitor to be very uncomfortable on my fatty arm, it hurts enough that I end up tensing while the machine is taking my BP. What do you think about using pillows to elevate the wrist to heart level to ensure that the wrist monitor gets an accurate reading?

I bought the Omron 7 wrist monitor for my 88 year old mom with dementia because the standard elbow one was too painful for her. Quite happy with it. A slightly inaccurate measurement is better than none.

Dr. Kenny, I just got my wrist bp monitor. I have had some pretty severe edema, so my doctor wanted to know my bp regularly, even in telemedicine. I was watching videos and came across yours. Very interesting. I paid attention to your comment about the height of my wrist and although it never occurred to me before, I thought "pillows on my lap." I put pillows on my lap and just lay my hand on the pillows. Is that ok?

I've never had BP issues. Went to the dentist, they used a wrist monitor and I got 149/102. After this reading, I decided to buy my own wrist monitor so I can monitor myself. The reading stayed high especially on the diastolic side (>94 and < 110) systolic was mostly around 130. I scheduled a doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks to check on this issue. Hoping the wrist monitor is causing wrong readings.

Don't trust any of these home BP machines they are junk have your doctor take it manually I have never seen a home machine give accurate readings. There is a reason hospital machines cost $2500 it's because they are not designed poorly. I went though 5 home BP machines found all to read much higher then what a doctors office taking it manually is reading. Also don't drink Caffeine drinks before you have it checked none of those energy drinks either. I went to my cardiologist a few months ago he said mine was high 150/90 which was really odd. I went back to my GP a week later asking about this he took it was back to normal 127/78 he asked me about if I drank any coffee sure enough I had my coffee mug on the way to the cardiologist hadn't even crossed my mind. Lot of drinks have something in them what I do now I just drink plane old water the day over any doctor visit that way I know won't throw any high numbers.

I was freaking out too one day. I have a cheap wrist cuff that's like 3 or 4 years old and I checked my BP and it read 148/98 and I got anxiety attack. Can these be wrong by that much because my brother who is 25 years old healthy measured his BP and it read 150/98 and he felt completely fine and he said his BP is normally 120/85ish range Then my mother checked hers and it read 160/87 and she was resting and felt fine and hers was also normally in healthy ranges. My mom tried to reassure me because she was like there's no way all 3 of us had high blood pressure like that. In other words can cheap blood pressure cuffs or blood pressure cuffs that are more than 2 years old be this inaccurate? Was I freaking out for no reason?

Victoria Cavarretta-Wolf yes it definitely can, for example sometimes our heart has random stray beats called PVCs that monitors might pick up and read them as arrhythmias when it’s probably not. Thanks for the comment ☺️

@@KoiAcademy They prefer the wrist monitor. Another that I see, a surgeon, prefers the cuff. His nurse has me sit erect, pull my shoulders back to increase lung capacity, take deep breaths and then exhale very slowly. I am beginning to think that individual medical schools have individual methods of teaching this technique. Some want my arm level with the heart, some lay the arm on the arm of a chair. Some want the bare arm, others have taken it with a sweater on. Too many methods for something that should be so basic, this layperson thinks. But many thanks for the video.
