@@jamesabarritt thanks James! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! I’d love to hear more about your perspective before and after this video? Was there anything in particular you found helpful? Thanks! JP 🙏
@@MelodyMathlete yess so for as long as i have been writing my process was, write the song starting with the first verse going to the pre chorus, chorus etc, until the end of the piece; not much of a process at all and i was focussing mainly on lyrics rather than melodies as the melody would come to me as i wrote. perhaps as a result of this all my choruses were bloody boring, slow ie didnt get to the point, not ''catchy'' by the barest definition of the word; having a real process like the one set out in your video i believe will be extremely useful for me! i had heard starting with the hook first was a good idea, didn't really understand why before. if you are free to answer, i had a quick question; do you have a process for determining whether a song is "good enough" to put out? particularly in the case of compiling an album - and in saying "good enough" this is keeping in mind that music is an art form wherein artists set different standards for themself: what are yours? thank you! and thank you for your videos james
Wow, thanks for sharing James! Very cool to hear 🙏 This is a fantastic question, and you're not the first to ask! I think I should do a video on this in the near future... There are a few parts to determining whether a song is "good enough". Assuming your goal for the release is to get streams, create fans, make some money, connect with people and hopefully help the listener on a deeper level than just entertainment, I would consider the following: 1. Purpose / Brand message: What is your purpose and brand message as an artist? Do the lyrics of this song align with it? 2. Business / Marketing goals: What are your business and marketing goals? Will this song help you achieve those goals? 3. Melody Do the Main Melodies create the desired amount of contrast (repetition vs novelty)? (As mentioned in this video) 4. Lyrics Are the lyrics clear? Can a stranger listen and easily understand what the meaning of the song is? Are the lyrics express emotion in a vulnerable and authentic way? Are the lyrics descriptive and sensory enough to pull the listener into the story? 5. Then there would be a check list for the production, mix etc. as well. Does that make sense? JP 🤘
Hey Duresameen! Sorry for my delayed response. Thank you for watching and for your feedback! I appreciate you 🙏 Is there anything in particular you would like help with regarding lyrics and melody?
Thanks JP. I’ve written two songs in my life, both with zero guidance and it showed. 🤪🙃 Your lesson is very interesting and breaks down so much of the mystery , although it will still take me weeks to unpack this gem 😁Thanks for sharing your wisdom.🤗
Thank you for these videos JP! Question: is it appropriate to write a post chorus rather than a pre chorus? Would love to send you what I’m working on! 🙂🎶
Hey again Lola! Great question... and only you can answer that for yourself, because it depends on what your goals are for your music. If you want your song to be as short as possible, don't worry about either. If you want your songs to have have more dynamic ups and downs and take your listener on a journey, have both It also depends on how you approach a pre-chorus vs post chorus. E.g. A well written song with a verse, pre-chorus, chorus and post-chorus can be created in a way which is more concise, catchier and engaging compared to a not-so-well written song with just a verse and chorus. I personally see the purpose of a pre-chorus to build emotion and connect the story of the verse to the main message of the chorus I personally see the purpose of a post chorus to focus in on 1 specific hook to increase memorability / catchiness of the song I'd love to hear what you are working on! 🙏
I liked the explanation and visualization of "Mini Melodies." It's something I have recognized in music but didn't have a clear understanding of it's concept. I will definitely be using that. I also like question 1,2,3, because it expresses many people's complexity about music production but in a simple way that isn't overwhelming. At least, that's how I perceive it. 😂
Thanks Philip! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment 🙏 Glad to hear the video was helpful. My goal is to try and simplify a lot of the complexities around songwriting, so I'm happy that it's working haha Take care 🤘
@@MelodyMathlete It definitely works for me!!! 👍 I've been listening to AViVA for maybe 6 years, so it's interesting to find one of her producers all of a sudden. 😂 Keep up the helpful videos, I definitely will be sticking around.
@@MelodyMathlete "GRRRLS" was the first song I listened too. "BLAME IT ON THE KIDS" was next. I know those are the most popular songs but there's a reason for it. 😂 My other favorites that are lesser known: "TWISTED" "OBLIVION" "DGAF" "DROWN." I actually enjoy "DGAF" a lot because it's refreshing hearing her natural voice and a lot of AViVA's vocals are sung in cursive, I'm addicted to that kind of dark sound. Not sure how to describe it😅, but I listen to Melanie Martinez as well (if that tells you anything.)
@@philliprobertson1347 What a fantastic selection! Haha yes, those first two have really taken off 🚀 Thanks for listening for so many years!! We appreciate your support 🙌
if its possible to add sound examples to illustrate the song structure contrast between the sections that would make this more understandable. great video though
