Thank you so much for this video. It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one being frugal. I’m not just frugal to save myself the cost (though it is hard to justify the expense when we have little money to support our family) but also because of the cost to the environment. (Uh oh, warning: soap box moment ahead!) Fabrics/fashion is a major contributor to pollution. We have such a disposable attitude to everything in our society these days. I was raised to find value in everything and not throw it out until it could no longer be used or repurposed. ‘Old’ clothes, doonas, sheets etc are not trash, to me they are treasure. If the fabric is strong I will find a use for it. Even if it is faded or stained it can be used as a stabiliser for scrappy projects. It also adds another layer of warmth and weight to a quilt. If it is not strong, I will still use it to stuff another project or create a dog toy or something 🤭. Very little leaves my house unremade (ooo, I think I just invented a new word🤣) Thank your taking the time and making the effort to share, totally appreciated🤗
Thank you Hanni, I am in total agreement with all you have said! I also use EVERYTHING! Not just in the sewing room...I have self set seedlings coming up everywhere at the moment in the garden and need to pot them on...then find a home for them...and my freezer is full of 'interesting soups' made with leftovers...amazing what a difference a spot of curry powder can make!!! Thank you for watching...lovely to hear from you...you made me smile. X
What a wonderful item to have from your Grandmother - I learned a great deal from their generations make do and mend philosophy. I too complete my quilts on a perfectly adequate Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine, but while I use vintage Sylko or Coats Chain cotton thread am finding it near impossible to find white. So if it likes Coats Moon Polyester I''ll try that. I buy cotton sheets in Dunelm in the sales and occasional charity shops. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for sharing...good luck with the coats moon thread...and thank you for reminding me about Dunelm...I am going to compile a list of useful shops for UK quilters. I will certainly add that to it😊x
I love this video. You are so organized and I love how you store and organize your fabric and supplies. Such an important message and reminder that keeping it simple with just the basics works just fine. My mother sewed the most beautiful clothing and never had anything but the basic necessities. Your quilts are so pretty! Such fun cheerful patterns and colors. 😊. Thank you for taking the time to post this video!
Good morning, Thank you so much for making this video. I have recently retired and decided that I will take up quilting. In the few short months I have set out on my quilting journey, I have amassed quite a lot of everything that has to do with quilting. Your video spoke to me and showed me that much can be accomplished with less. I now realize I don't need as much. I will take many of your suggestions as I move forward. Thank you.
You are welcome..it is very tempting...so many wonderful products on the market! I hope you enjoy your new hobby...such a lovely community to be part of 😊x
@dianedavis5958 I have completed my first Log Cabin quilt top. On Tuesday, I am going to attempt to sandwich it. I have an older Kenmore. I'm slightly (more than slightly) anxious. 😊
I really enjoyed this video. I’m not frugal or thrifty so I need all the help I can get. 😉 Nice to know my favorite hobby doesn’t have to be so expensive. Thanks!
I just subscribed. You have some great ideas. Growing up on a farm and my family was very conscious of money. I married a very wise accountant. From these two influences one of the best things i learned was to set a budget for your hobby and shop bargains. Your reminder of not over buying for your project is s good one too! Any fabric I get is new to me so it doesnt have to be a certain designer or a brand new line. I have a post card hung in my sewing room that sayes Make do and mend! I reminds me to use what I have.
Great idea to set a budget...when I was young I watched my mother put money into an array of tins...each allocated for a different bill...I think that stayed with me. Make Do and Mend was the name of a pamphlet issued by the British Ministry of information during WWII...'useful tips on how to be both frugal and stylish' in a time of rationing...solid thinking.
Hi Diane. Great video! I’m very drawn to trying out quilting, never done it before. Watched lots of other channels, and while they make beautiful quilts, there does seem to be a big outlay when starting out. Your advice and tips are brilliant, and I have most of what I will need to get started. Just a rotary cutter, and 3 rulers, and fabric, and I’m off! New subscriber here. Will be checking out rest of your channel. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from UK
If you use an eraser on your cutting board it will help remove the threads/lint stuck in the cracks. It’s amazing how much it ‘revives’ the mat and extends its life. To say nothing of extending the life of your rotary cutter blades. Occasionally I drop the mat in the bath tub and give it a good wash as well.
Hi Diane, I watched this from Germany. Thanks for your tips on how to store your cut-up leftovers in clear plastic sheaths! One of my greatest tips for backing fabrics is to buy thrifted bedsheets and use them. Quite a few elderly people over here who move into retirement homes or pass away sometimes leave cotton sheets or quilt covers that haven't ever been used or haven't been used much. Sometimes I dye them in the washing machine. They are huge and make great backing, and often I pay only 5 € for the whole backing fabric and perhaps 7 € for the dye.
Great tip Susanne about the dye...I will definitely keep that it mind! Lovely to hear from you in Germany...I was born in your country and spent my early years there...only the fondest of memories...a beautiful country!!!
Love seeing how people store their fabric. My scrap fabric is in colour bags. I don't pre cut into sizes, that way the fabric can be utilized if the pattern calls for a bigger size square. I agree with the solid colours being cheaper than patterned and designer fabric. You can get wider cut fabric for the backings, and these work out way cheaper than traditional quilt fabrics. Depending on the size of your quilt, also seek out sheets for the backing, but keep an eye out for the quality. The eqyptian cotten duvet cover sounded like a cool find. Another source of fabrics can be the local charity shop. If you are lucky a small bundle of fabric or even duvet covers or sheets. I tend to over buy fabric, so I can have "scraps" for later.
Thank you for sharing Kattybob...I will collate all ideas and offer them up at a later time. So many minds working in different ways...fascinating 😊. I always look in my local charity shops but rarely find anything useful. But then...half the fun is in the search. Thank you for your kind support.
Wonderful tips and advice on tools, fabrics, notions. Really enjoyed this video. I agree, your voice is very soothing and calming. Thank you so much for sharing.❤ I've subscribed and eager to see more. 😊
Love how you organize your strips! and small squares, no need for ironing/starching (again) as they are so neatly put away. I might have to try this :) thank you, great information! I do like to thrift men's cotton/linen shirts and sheets/pillowcases for cheap backing - I use cotton flannel (sometimes sheets) as batting in summer quilts (and for picnic/beach) they are still lovely and warm but not as voluminous and heavy (especially when wet ) as cotton batting.
Thank you freddie...yes indeed who wants to iron something twice!!! Absolutely love the idea of flannel as summer batting...perfect...I will definitely try that. X
@@dianedavis5958 :) just remember if you buy new flannel to pre-wash it as it does shrink a lot more than cotton fabric - found that out the hard way the first time I used brand new flannel lol
Thank you for your kindness. I design all of my own quilts...they can all be found on my channel...I share my designs and process for free. The one's shown in this video are: The Mermaid Quilt, Summer Picnic, The Dahlia Patch, The Saturday Quilt [Bee Quilt with Daisies] and Forest Friendship Star. Hope this helps.
Thank you Marq, there are some blue; John Louden, Sarah Payne, Crafty Lass and a mix of Rose and Hubble...sourcing fabrics from a range of outlets. Hope this helps.
If I had more material I'd have made more quilts by now. Only made 2 but jelly rolls are expensive. I don't know if aldis fat quarters are good quality. They are reasonably priced tho
Hi Pam...I have used Aldis' fat quarters for tote bags in the past and they sew and wash well. I'm not sure how long the colour will last but they are a great way to build your skills. Just feel the fabric...some are better quality than others😊
One step at a time...you'll be fine. Don't judge yourself too harshly...in time to come you'll look back at your earliest quilts with the fondest of memories. 😊

I don't know why everyone thinks you need precuts to make a quilt. They are overpriced and unnecessary.
Everytime I buy a specialty ruler, it ends up being rarely, if ever, used and Ive wasted the money.
