  • DRESS FOR THE 80s
The next three days (your weekend) cools down dramatically. The first time in 66 days afternoon highs fall back to the 80s. June 18th we saw 89°. Today we fall to 83°. Highs around 82-88° are forecast Friday through Sunday in the Bakersfield area. Kern County mountain areas are in the upper 60s to low 70s. Unusual for this time of year. We are running a good ten to fifteen degrees below normal.
A deep trough of cold air falls out of the Gulf of Alaska through Saturday. It exits Sunday. This will keep us below normal and bring breezy weather for the next two days. Winds are not strong enough to create a wind advisory. Skies will be mostly sunny.
    HEATWAVE #5 COMING
Warmer air quickly returns Monday, next week. High pressure rebuilds out of the Desert Southwest. The off shore winds, out of the southeast, will help drive our temps back to the upper 90s (seasonal for this time of year). However, the warm up will not stop there. A strong enough easterly flow will take us to the low 100s (100-105) Tuesday through Thursday. Three days in a row of triple digits. This should be enough to start our fifth heatwave of the year. It will also take us to our 49th, 50th and 51st triple digit days of the year. That will make 2024 the 15th most triple digits ever recorded in one year for Bakersfield. The most was in 1917 with 76 triple digit days.
    HEATWAVE WILL NOT LAST LONG
The ridge weakens come next Friday into the weekend. Temperatures will remain hot, but not at the century marker. Expect triple digits to end Friday and Heat Wave #5 to end that same day. Skies will remain sunny.
