VAT PHOU TEMPLE, CHAMPASAK (This is so mysterious! 😳)

We learnt that there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just an hour away from Pakse called the Wat Phou in the Champasak province! Built during the same time as the Angkor Wat by Hindu kings, this Hindu temple was built for Lord Shiva because of the giant mountain in the background shaped like a Linga. Two ancient cities called Lingapura and Shretapura flourished here in that era (leading up to 12th centuries). The temple is in ruins, but the Indian government is working with the Lao government to restore the temple to a safe and glorious state where visitors can admire the architecture and learn about the great history of the massive empire that ranged from modern day Tamil Nadu in south India to Bali in Indonesia!

Actually Champasak was built by the Chams. For a long time it was believed to have been built by the Chams who were majority Hindu at the time. As well Champasak translated means Champa Post. I read this over twenty years ago. Was told the Lao government actually for a time took the word Champa from Champasak and only called it Pasak.
