Good advice, I remember the sandflies were able to bite me through my hiking socks... they are awful... but NZ is so beautiful.

Out here we got what is referred to as eye gnatz. I don't know if they're the same thing or not. But I got a stye in my eye because they drink liquid from every orifice. Eventually though,...the season of them will end,.. and we won't have to worry about them for the most part.LoL. 😵😬😅👀

Thank you for the advise! Sound advise for most hikes. Now you need to come to the USA and hike the Appalachian trail or many of the other great trails here.

    Hi Maui,
I came across your channel when I was searching for " Travel watercolor kit" on youtube few months ago... After that I made a few kits of my own, however your simple kit stuck in my mind and I went through all your videos last week and was very much inspired by how you managed to do watercolor paintings in the most extreme weather conditions..and also the simplicity of minimalism..
Thanks for posting the vidoes.. they have encouraged me to stop and paint where ever I go..

Thank you very much for those tips… got the long gaiters now, and thinking what else to help with sandfly protection :)

This kind of information is so useful. It's one thing reading the official guides. It's quite another getting first hand into from an expert who's got no vested interest in promoting the trail. Good work Maiu!!😁

Who has vested interest in promoting a public owned tramping track?

New Sub!!,.I love this kind of information it's very very good stuff,.. and I have friends in New Zealand,... but only on the internet,... so your trip just gives me a little more insight into the locations.

Reading up on the "Sandfly" apparently there is a bite and sting extractor that stops the itch.

I now always carry a mesh headnet. Around $2 from aliexpress, and weighing only a few grammes.

So, um, are you sort-of glad that you didn't commit to 3,000 km of this sort of terrain, with the Te Araroa?

    • @MaiuLunekund

The TA isn't like this the whole way, it's more countryside roads along some hiking trails. But most of all I'm glad that I didn't commit because of the heat, it really doesn't suit me 😅

long sleeves (loose) ... and trou, both in lighter colours with a spare bucket of insect repellent ... you'll be fine ;-) (and people wonder why orcs are so nasty ;-)
