I heard of ppl having troubles of knots coming through painted areas... what type of paint do you use to stop that? or do you use any shellac on top of your wood stain before painting any design? If I am painting a design using acrylic paint on wood, and the sign will be completely outside exposed to the elements, would the water based polycrilic be my best option for the sealer?

  • @brandisnyder2669

    All of these clear options are for interior... which would fine I suppose on a porch or closed patio, but what is best for outside in the elements like in a garden?

    • @SarahVanderkooy

      I would use the Polyurethane, great for indoor or outdoor. Use a few coats, waiting for them dry in between, to get a really good seal.

    This was wonderful! I was looking on Amazon for the spray and they do not carry the exact one you used. For exterior, I found Varathane Water Based Ultimate Spar Urethane on Amazon. Very informative video! I have question. I made a craft project with a round wood sign. I used 2 ounce craft paint. Navy blue,white and red. It will be hanging on my front door with a porch over hang plus the afternoon sun hitting on it. I want to use polyurethane on it to protect it from the elements. Which one should I use? And will the polyurethane yellow any of the colors on the wood? Thank you.

    I have a question and I really hope you see this. My pup recently passed away and before we buried him we made 3 separate wooden frames with his two front paws using acrylic paint. We will be adding his name and date-date as well but was not sure if spraying with acrylic sealer should be done. I have never done this so I am worried that the spray will mess with the paws. Would you recommend using the spray? They will be all indoor but one may be traveling a bunch (so just suitcase/luggage) I just want to know the best route to save his print for as long as possible and without damage. I hope you see this and any help will be appreciated.

    Hello. I am working on a 5 ft cedar slab that will be an exterior bench. I will be painting artwork on this bench. I normally do artwork for interior and I use a triple thick glaze spray, multiple coats, but they are not for outside. Can you recommend a high gloss sealant? I bought polyurethane, but I’m worried about the yellowing. The paintings will be sea turtles and a couple of fish

      If you use just oil to bring out the wood grain it may be difficult to get the paint to stick. But I would try it on a scrap piece of wood and see how it holds up. Good luck!

    I paint and then decorate wooden boxes with adhesive plastic crystals (glittering type). These are used as jewelry boxes. I wanted to protect the finished surfaces and so used polyurethane / acrylic / modpodge as sealants. These coatings are supposed to dry completely clear however I feel they are leaving a very thin residue on the crystals making them a little dull. Is this what these finishes can do or is there a still better one? Thanks for any adivise.

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  2 года назад

      You boxes sound lovely! These finishes will be clear on paint and wood, but over crystals I think they will always have some type of cloudy look. The light can't reflect as nicely when they are coated. If you are using a strong adhesive that should be enough to hold them in place. Hope that helps.

    • @SarahVanderkooy

    I am going to try to make a wood sign for my bathroom. Just wondering what paint and sealer do you recommend for this? I’m lost at what to use. I’m asking because one I’m not a very crafts person and two I know moisture from steamy hot shower may mess up sign. Hate to sound like a dummy, just need help? Thank you so much 👍👍

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  5 лет назад

      Hi Debbie. Any craft paint will work for a sign in your bathroom. If you get a lot of moisture be sure to seal it. To make it easier grab a spray version of a water based sealer and use that to cover your sign. Wait until the paint is completely dry, take it outside, and give it a few light coats following the directions on the can. Hope that helps!

    I have some large natural edged pieces of oak wood that I want to turn into garden signs. I'm worried they will warp as I'm not sure they're totally dried out, and I have no idea what to seal them in to make them completely weatherproof once painted. Would yacht varnish be sufficient?

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  4 года назад

      I can't advise on the type of wood, I would make sure they are dry first but that's hard to tell. As for the sealer, the Polyurethane I mention in the video would be ideal. You can apply a few coats to ensure it is properly covered and waterproof.

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  4 года назад +1

      I would not recommend putting stain over the vinyl letters, you may risk damaging the vinyl. If you are making a sign you can stain the wood first then add the letters.
      If you want to protect the sign with vinyl letters you can use one of these methods to seal over the vinyl.

    I still struggle with the letters becoming yellow. I stain my wood, I use chalk white paint for letters and even after days after letting it dry. I put any of these sealants and my white letters, yellow. Ugh, what am I doing wrong?

      My signs go outside so I do want them to last through rain shine winter and heat, so what can I do now

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  4 года назад +1

      That's tough! It sounds like your method is correct. I personally don't use chalk paint on my signs.I use a satin or gloss acrylic paint. It's possible the paint could be absorbing the sealant differently. Maybe try a test piece with a different type of paint for the sign and see what happens. Best of luck with your signs.
