Tijuana, Mexico is one of the most important cities in North America. It is the gateway into the United States from Latin America, and is home to the world's most trafficked border crossing.
The San Ysidro border crossing in Tijuana, Mexico connects Tijuana with San Diego, California. This border crossing has always been an important social, political, and economic passageway for both US Citizens and our neighbors to the south.
In more recent years, the Tijuana border crossing has been a centerpiece of news coverage all over the globe because of the sheer number of people attempting to get into the United States.
Social, economic and political unrest in Latin countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and other areas around Mexico, have led to a large influx of people trying to seek a better future in the United States.
My biggest goal for coming down to Tijuana, Mexico this week was to experience this unbelievable migrant wave first-hand, and try to explain their story a little bit better than the news does.
Luckily, through Border Tours, we were able to connect with the Migrant Affairs office in downtown Tijuana, and arrange a visit to (just) two of the migrant camps setup here in the Mexican border city.
What I experienced in these migrant camps, still sits with me today...
Please let me know what you think in the comments!

Since the beginning of time, we as a human species have been migrating. We go where the opportunities are. It’s in our DNA. We migrate for food, water, weather, safety, freedom, work.
This is just one of the many migrations happening around the world right now. My goal of this video is to give you a very small glimpse into what that migration looks like for the people who are actually going through it.
The saddest aspect of this entire thing is that country’s are failing their people. Corruption and mismanagement lead to suffering.
I know people in these comments will say “why should the United States be responsible for the welfare of another country’s citizens; we have our own problems.”
I completely understand your point of view.
However, my mission here is to simply show you what people on the ground are going through.
    I hope you understand that.
If you liked the video, or it moved you in any way, please hit that “like” button and let me know via Instagram (instagram.com/traveldeeper/) I would love to hear from you about this!

We do, mostly because the US gets pissed about it and trheatens us, but it is next to imposible, our borders with Guatemala and Belice are very porous and mostly unsurveyable jungle, if people make it through the US-Mexico border they'll easily make it trhough our souther border.
Also it is not hard to make it into México, we don't tend to refuse migrants or asylum seekers unless they're in a caraban and the US governtment gets pushy about it, if anything we have a lot of oportunies for them to integrate here and they say they'll do it to get across, but they choose not to.

The money. In Mexico everybody gets chunk of the trafficking of humans. The Cartels charge thousands of dollars. The police and the politicians get a piece of the action. But seriously, the US is in on the invasion. They can put their troops on their border but they do not. The Democrats get more voters and they increase their representative numbers up during the census years. The Republicans get cheap labor for their factories. My uncle is a hard core Republican. Half his work force are illegals and thanks to Trump he pays less taxes as well. Nothing will change as long as large amounts of money is involved.

As a child of immigrants of the 60s, I feel for the people going through this at the border. But one also has to ask, "when does it stop...when do people stop coming and coming and coming?" The US is put in a bad light cause they don't easily accept people to just come in, but what other country does? Through the many faults this country has, it is the most compassionate and caring country in the world when it comes to humanitarian issues. Thanks for a great video.

We are Latinos as well but she always said "a lot of Americans are lazy and depend on the states to take care of them" which is true. Some of them have kids, how are they going to pay for childcare and work at a job that pays less than minimum wage. I get paid more than minimum wage and can’t afford childcare and I can’t get government help because I make above the wages required. Is just a mess all together.

There’s a lack of programs/resources to accommodate the amount of ppl coming in. One of the men said that they don’t have a constructive plan that can navigate quickly. It’s become more difficult to obtain legal paperwork. Like you said “where the heck are they supposed to work”? It would be awesome if they can obtain at least visas to work. But America makes it so complicated. It’s understandable but at the the same time inhumane. Considering the money thrown around here when it can go to people in need who are willing to work.

I had a dream, I was being held in a all Mexican hospital filled with dying patients and some with over crowded rooms. I was being cared for in a room. Once the nurse left, i began looking at the things in the room, they had left some of the last patients belongings inside the drawer, I found some vitamins, a wallet, and a few documents. Next to the drawer was another bed I thought I was lucky to have a bed of clean sheets. I began to cry that my life was no longer the same. I fell asleep in tears, but I went into a dream within a dream and I saw the spirit that died there, he was staring at the wall next to the bed telling me that in the next room there is a family sad that they are watching his father die. He told me his name was Sergio and that they used to call him eevee, because of his eevee tattoo on his left arm. He told me he was thankful he lived a good life before what happened that caused his death. We had a short conversation but I can’t remember. I woke up in a different dream where our children are in danger in this world. I saw very brutal things I can’t share. Please pray for our world to be better. There is great suffering in our world, and this was gods way of making me aware of that. Please share.

Gareth- I really appreciate this video. It helped me to see the other side, as I’m an English teacher for newly arrived immigrant teens. I have heard so many of their stories, and I see their pain, but I’ve never seen what these shelters look like. The majority of the kids I work with are from the Northern Triangle (Guat, ESal, Honduras), and they are all fleeing violence or incredible poverty. Many of my students are gang age and leave to avoid recruitment, and the girls leave to avoid “becoming a girlfriend of the local gangs.” That’s a direct quote.
Additionally, one thing that wasn’t highlighted was the large % of unaccompanied minors (my students). Imagine a parent knowing that it’s safer to send their teenage son or daughter to the US with a coyote to live with an uncle or aunt than to keep them in the home county. These kids travel alone, although in a group, and see and experience things that none should. When they arrive to the US, they’re housed for far too long (often it is months) in detention centers while awaiting their US contact to collect them. The US person (auntie, uncle, older brother) is often nervous to collect them because they’re also undocumented. I have so many stories of my 15 or 16 year old student who is being supported by their 21 year old brother who arrived a year ago.
The whole system in all sides is a mess. I wish our country would create a fair path to citizenship. I’m so thankful to TJ and the churches for helping and supporting these folks. Life is incredibly hard for them, and they just want to work hard, send money home, and see their families thrive, like all of us. A good book I recommend, for anyone who wants to read and understand about the unaccompanied minors situation with a first hand experience is called The Far Away Brothers. True story of twin teens that had to flee because one of them got involved with gangs. It highlights their journey and has interviews etc and how life was after they arrived to Oakland, school, etc..
The only thing I was disappointed in was that there was no mention of how we can get involved, donate, etc…. What can we do to support? What legit charities, organizations, etc…? Maybe people that live in SD want to visit with backpacks full of children’s books, school supplies, hygiene supplies for women, etc…
Thank you for this video. You have my respect and gratitude. ❤️

Sending your child unaccompanied across a dangerous border (to be taken care of at the American tax payers expense) is child abuse. Period. They want more ECONOMIC opportunity for not just their children, but for themselves as well. Don’t fall for all the sob stories. It’s all about MONEY.

Won't that cause huge increases on our carbon footprint or am I crazy???

@@25oxendine you are exactly correct. These people don’t make any logical sense whatsoever. They want to fundamentally change the U.S.-that is their plan. They want to bring it to a third world status so they have more control. These people are sick and more Americans are waking up every day to their evil ways. We are taking back our country from these tyrannical Globalists that only care about enriching themselves and turning everyone else into slaves.

Recently went to a shelter. It's horrible, the water is storaged right aside the Mobile WC and stinks so bad.
This situation is out of control in Tijuana, and some migrants who came looking for a better life are getting caught by cartels anyway.

Perhaps you have already been to the shelters and seeing the harsh reality there or you were thinking ahead of what you are about to witness. Either way, I can see the sadness in your eyes. Thanks for this eye-opening, behind-the-curtain look of the immigration status at the US-Mexico border. Praying for those people. Cheers!

Winter 2015 I crossed over from San Diego to TJ and saw hundreds of people living in the concrete TJ river basin. Just mere feet from the border. It was crazy, they were living in holes burning trash to stay warm. I can only imagine what it’s like now.

@@GarethLeonard I think this was the part that was the hardest to hear. To be given an slice of hope that if they survive the journey to the border that they will find peace and freedom - only to be shuffled around and landed back to an unknown city with no resources to help them. I'm sure a lot of those lies are created from the Coyotes who ferry the families up to the border - but why are Border control sending them on a merry goose chase also? I'm pretty sure that's also costing the US time/money/resources - it would be better to say entry denied from the off-set?
