    My favourite two songs are "The Night and the Silent Water" and "Master's Apprentices." Night... has the most beautiful section where the acoustic part transitions into a more metal part at around 7:30. It's interesting to hear how they combine rhythms as gradually the double bass drums take over and then eventually the whispered vocals singing "You sleep in the light. Yet the night and the silent water still so dark." Master... has a brilliant opening followed by an almost ethereal middle which is so suddenly interrupted by a total demon voice which gave me a jump start of joy when I first heard it. I could go on and on about Opeth. My favourite band ever.

    One thing I love about watching these analysis videos about Mikael's vocals and music, is the contrast between what Mikael thinks of his own music vs. what people like Mark think. If Mikael saw this, he'd probably say something like, "Huh, he's making it seem like I knew what I was doing." Now I'm not saying that Mike DIDN'T know what he was doing, because obviously he's a genius, but Mike said himself that he doesn't think his music (I mainly mean his lyrics and musical artistic choices here) should be taken too seriously nor looked into too deeply. I love that about Mike because he's so humble about his music. He even said himself that "lyrics are a necessary evil when writing music", and to not look into his too deeply, as I said before.

    I appreciate the honesty. I also happen to absolutely love the Roundhouse performances. There were times where that CD was on repeat in my car for months at a time.
    What I love about his vocals is that he makes such great use of his clean vocals. So many metal singers don't really enjoyed that well in their clean vocals of they happen to do both.
    As for my favorite moments in their songs, is basically any time they use a great ambient section to build back up.

    Absolutely agree with your take on his vocals in this video vs Red Rock (the bluey shots one), I also think a lot of it has to do with his maturity and evolution as a vocalist over the years which he has talked about as turning him away from heavy vocals, hence albums like Sorceress (which I also love) and Bloodbath being an excellent outlet for the heavy vocal back in the day. 5:45 some other singers with the speech-level singing are Lorde & Troye Sivan. Over the years, Mikael has learnt to properly use his singing voice and now, he sings high notes perfectly, as can be seen in the latest album. In the early albums like Morningrise, he was speech-singing.

  • @williamreynolds3487
    @williamreynolds3487 3 года назад +1

    Finally! Opeth!
    Edit: You are dead on about the change in screams. I've been saying this for forever; it really sounds like he's gone toward false cord since Ghost Reveries (something changed heavily after Deliverance). But pre Ghost Reveries is fry for sure. I think around the Royal Albert Hall concert when his screams were at their worse, he stopped trying to do fry all together and switched to false cord, which has gotten really good recently.

    • @Celatra
      @Celatra 3 года назад

      Why does everyone get this wrong
      He started with false chords. Because Mike himself has said his early technique was quiet. Listening to morningrise, you can actually hear it's really hollow and close to the mic. This went on until deliverance. In Ghost reveries he started to just belt out his growls. There is a significant change in volume and the tone is much fuller.
      There is an isolated vocals only of a few songs on Blackwater park. Studying leper affinity and listening, i quickly discovered he uses false chords but does them with an open mouth and low larynx. There is not much modulation going on. His mouth movement is pretty natural. And the behind the making of Deliverance confirms this. They're really low in volume and he practically whisper screams. On ghost reveries and watershed however, they're more akin to traditional death metal growls.
      And in RAH he simply had lost his voice, and they're not fucking false chords lol, they're just all he has left from his fry screams. I do both myself and the tone matches.

    • @williamreynolds3487
      @williamreynolds3487 3 года назад

      @@Celatra the fact that they were quiet proves even further that they were fry screams. Fry is simply quieter than false cord (99% of the time; I won’t use absolutes). If you’ve ever compared the two, either hearing someone else or doing it yourself, you’d hear that. The fact that his screams were really tight, but somewhat breathy is a clear indicator of fry. Just listen to the Lamentations show or The Drapery Falls pro shot footage from 2001 and you’ll hear it. As for the first two albums, we won’t ever know for sure, but I’d assume he was still perfecting his vocals and didn’t have full cord closure or great technique (if you wanna hear an extreme example of this, listen to Katatonia’s first album; that dude had as close to no technique as you could). Nonetheless, he was still clearly doing fry screams on those first two albums. Nowadays, and even after Deliverance, you can hear that Cookie Monster-type scream that is associated with false cord, not fry in the slightest; I’ve never heard anyone’s fry sound like that. Tbf, though, we’ll never know for sure and everyone can have an opinion, of course. However, considering multiple people who know what they’re talking about have stated that the screams are fry, and I do fry screams and sound very similar to his vocals (which is not the case when I try to replicate known false cord vocalists with my fry screams), I’d say it’s a pretty solid assumption they are fry screams. Not to mention the volume, like you had said and the tightness of the vocals that you usually see with fry, but not much with false cord. Anyway, that was fun to type up! Have a good day!
      Edit: I also never said they were false cord at the RAH; I said from Ghost Reveries to the RAH he was starting to go toward false cord, which was indicated by the breathy-ness, but lack of cord closure.

I'm personally convinced he used much more fry screaming on the older albums like Morningrise and Orchid, especially for the long, drawn out screams. But the newer stuff is definitely more false chord. I'm sure he can and uses both techniques though. And he excels in everything.

      We have a confirmation from Mikael he started with false chords. He has in interviews said his first screams were low on volume but didnt require much effort. I want you to go to listen to morningrise and really pay attention to just how hollow his vocals are. It is very clear he does it with false chords but with an open mouth and is really close to the mic. Want more proof? listen to the isolated vocal tracks of the leper affinity.
      Want even more proof? Look at when he records vocals in the making of Deliverance & damnation videos. He stands VERY close to the mic. Pay attention to his mouth movements too. They're very natural unlike what is demonstrated by this guy. Now compare that to this performance
      Further from the mic, you hear more of mike's actual voice behind the growls, it sounds fuller, his highs have volume to them and he has a harder time holding notes out. He fucking belts those growls out. The neck tension confirms this. Plus there is a clear undertone to his vocals and it happens to be a D and a F#.
      I've done experiments myself and they match perfectly. He growls with his own voice without any crazy modulations. It's why it's so distinct. It's just his voice.

      The reason he changed technique in RAH was because he got in ear monitors and thought his growls sounded weird so he changed them.

    Opeth is magnificent. But If we’re gonna go heavy, how about Belphagor, Watain, Bohemoth? 😉

    Also bro, have you thought about getting a "dummy battery" for your camera? It dying in the middle of recording is kinda clunky for you to edit, I'm sure.

    I really learned a lot from this, but I'm not afraid of being bored, so it's possible to slow down a bit now and then in your comments. Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old european guy. Nine of ten is still good, and if my scale had one more level, I would say 9.5/10.

    What I think would be cool if Mark would analyze the song that made him want to learn harsh vocals or some breakdowns of old school death metal or black metal
    The patreon request are a bit too much Deathcore for my liking

    Mikhael's vocals definitely have changed a lot. His early harsh vocals were more black metal style, his current version sounds more like death grunts. I prefer the earlier form. The live version that is my favorite is the one from Shepherd's Bush Empire, the Lamentation/Damnation session. This session is ok but not as sharp and clear. The newer one from Red Rock Amphitheatre, I don't care to listen to. It might be easier or healthier to do but it just sounds ugly

    ruclips.net/video/WJZBjHAjTUc/видео.html is good but their newer stuff also shows his strength
    he's the death metal vocalist with the most emotions in his voice imho

    Whatever he did, he did it wrong for years lol and fucked up his voice for a bit which is why he had to change it up live.

      His growling went that way not because the wrong technique he used in 1995-2000 but mosly because of drinking, smoking and losing interest in extreme vocals. Anyway it seems like Mikael has really improved his growls by the end of 2019 year and he takes lesson with a vocal coach now

      No, it came down to overuse, drinking and smoking. And age. Almost no one in their 50's can growl like in their prime due to change in their physique.
