Something that I don't like about some art classes (NOT ALL), they show you step-by step and don't let you be creative or find and practice your own style. I remember taking one, where the teacher would give one of her own pieces, and tell us to do the EXACT thing, and we weren't allowed to add anything, or change it, or she would take it and throw it out..

I really loved my art class because, the teacher would give us a theme to practice, like silhouettes, shading with dots, or sometimes she would combine earlier themes. The catch was, there was a lot of Friday events, and it was a Friday only class, and the teacher was sick a lot so we...only got five classes. However, I still think it was great and It was the art I would put the most work into and I would be most proud of.

I understand what you mean by that because my teacher force's me and my class to draw a flower and I drew it realistically and when my teacher saw it she ripped it and told me to draw it better then she showed me in the white board(how to do it properly) and it looked like 7 year old drew it and this kept happening the whole in tire yearand the next year the same thing happened but the only difference that we moved on at a different object (I hate when teachers act like there better then you

I have photographic memory and don’t need references most of the time, I only use them when I’m making an ‘Anime vs Fanart’ post. Nobody has yelled at me yet.
Yea, reference is good, if I'm drawing fanart, I always have reference
References especially help with realism because unless you have a photographic memory it's hard to get details right
Personally I don’t use a reference I usually just draw from my mind But there’s nothing wrong with using a reference
As a realism artist, Imma tell your how those people draw realistically: REFERENCES. They look at like 5-6, mash together what they want, and BAM, realism.

@@4Rgames I’m glad that worked for you! Non-articulating objects (think living animals, action figures) are much less complicated to draw (not necessarily less detailed) since you only need to know how one piece looks from all angles.
I use references and I am a cartoony artist.suing a reference isn’t bad.it’s not “copying”drawing some thing you like isn’t “copying”
Tracing the line of the reference and claiming it’s your own is not ok it’s “plagiarism” and “copying”

Who is drawing without references?? Especially beginners?! My art teacher literally said we shouldn't draw WITHOUT looking at a reference and would ask to see what we had looked at while working on our projects

To avoid the “if you use reference you’re just stealing the photographer’s art” I use multiple photos as reference to create a new pose and still get the anatomy right. I also do this to get anatomy right the awesome thing in my mind’s eye

Man I remember I was in middle school and my art teacher knew I didn’t like drawing cause I wasn’t good at it but I was very good at sculpting and instead she let me do that as long it was related to what she wanted the class to draw. After that I’ve never had such a cool art teacher😂
I took an art class in freshman year.
She didn’t help grow our art skills or help us. Just yell at us if we drew in a cartoonish style
But I met my 3 best friends in that class

This is literally me, I’m a self taught portrait artist, I draw The Weeknd. I’ve always been into drawing (without color) but never tried until some time ago, I always use reference photos tho, when I started my parents thought I traced it- but no I use reference photos, my sister said it isn’t real art cuz I copy photos and it feels self diminishing, my parents still think I trace, I posted some of y’all wanna see but like still, it’s hard to make people look real without precise details and I don’t have photographic memory
In my art classy teacher would always show off my art and I loved art class.

That's literally what I did on breaks at work when I decided to doodle. A friend and I looked up an image we liked (Usually a Pokemon) and then we would both attempt to draw it. Afterward, compare each other's art and laugh at how bad we were at drawing. But we did it enough times that we got better.
There's something weirdly motivating when you find something you like and attempt to draw it. Like, the fact you WANT to draw it makes it easier to grind through the mistakes and improve. Where as in tutorials and stuff, you're probably being told to draw something you have next to no interest in, so your patience runs out more quickly
This is awesome! I took a bunch of art classes and I understand they try to expand your abilities by drawing things you have no interest in, but man I didn't give a crap and so wanted to just get it over with. I had one art teacher that let me draw dragons and superheroes and she would critique me on perspective and following rules of human height and proportion, but she understood this was stuff I was interested in and was helping me make it better! She was a great teacher.
Every time I ask people “what should I draw?” and every single time they say A DRAGON SERIOUSLY I CAN DRAW OTHER THINGZZZZ MMMMMM if u look at all of my drawing u will prob see 85% dragons
I've been drawing for 23 yrs and I still like to use reference. They help a ton especially for me when drawing in perspective. And even though I've improved over the years I tend to be my own worst critic and tend to set my goals higher and higher. In the end just like you said it's all about having fun and enjoying art and practice, practice, practice.
I agree art class is supposed to reach you to be creative and they make it so strict so it should have rules but less restrictive

I agree references are great I had trouble with an art work and I looked up a reference and it got 10x easier as long as u don't use stylized stuff as ur reference

Being an art teacher, I tell this to my students: F.A.I.L. First Attempt In Learning. Fail at drawing people, hands, feet, chairs, a hallway. Fail again and again and again. It's okay to suck at something getting better at art means failing...a lot. A. Lot. It's part of the process and it helps you out in the long run. Use references, do visual research and do it again and again until you don't need them anymore, but it's actually encouraged to use references. You look at what went wrong and fix it, but you also look at what went right and do it again. I show my students the artwork I used to make at their age to show them that it's okay to not be good right at the start. You're not expected to. Once you accept that, it won't be as stressful moving forward.

It’s always good to practice at your own pace with something. Because it’s more comfortable for you. It’s not like you’ll master something in ONE day! Mastering at something will take time to do. A long time! BUT it’s definitely worth it at the end 😁.

The one problem that i have with art classes is that a lot of them dont open you up for creativity. In fact art classes can sometimes cause you to hate art rather than love it because of the way the teacher is. Same as Mr. Tofu there was a horrible art teacher we called miss tugboat because it sounded like her last name and she was FAT. Not even the other teachers liked her and she only got the job because she knew someone who worked there. She was fired because she gave an amazing piece of art a C.

My art curse teacher always tells us even if you don't go to an art related school drawing will help you through in many other schools like : when you decide to do medic schooling you have already learned the anatomy of a body because of those body drawings you did nor if you go into dental you will know how the mouth and the other muscles around it are constructed or if you go as a biology major you'll be able to draw and present many plants and their parts by drawing even in the case of our tofu friend creator " psychology 311" , because drawing especially if you have done it for many years you'll train yourself to see details and emotions even in a short moment , you are able to get the gist of the scenario how to break it down and put in details that you might have forgotten to do . Drawing makes you have a photogenic memory and a observational eye to your surroundings witch is great helping hand when you're doing an analysis. In conclusion if you like to draw take full advantage of it because it will help you in many great ways through out your life .😅😊🤗😺😸
