Great video - thank you! Husband and I just got invited to play and needed a power instructional video on the basics. This is clear, concise and smart. Cheers~!
Thanks, Matt! Four basic but very important points well explained and demonstrated! That you can continue to narrate your issue as you are playing is very helpful to me in grasping your point. (And a pretty impressive skill as well!) I’ve subscribed and will be looking at all your videos.
Nothing can touch the ground in the kitchen, or on the line, as part of a volley (hitting the ball out of the air). You can be in the kitchen any time as long as its not immediately before, during, or after a volley. You can reach into the kitchen to volley a ball, in that case nothing can touch the ground in the kitchen or the line as part of your shot or the follow through. It's not wise to hang out in the kitchen for long because your opponent can hit the ball at you and you won't have time to allow it to bounce.
If you think of the kitchen as the No Volley Zone you’ll have a better idea what it is. You can’t stand or move into the kitchen on a volley (hitting the ball before it bounces). If the ball bounces in the kitchen, you can step in to return it - sometimes on a dink you have to step in! You can also reach in to volley - the air space isn’t special, you just can’t step there (or drop your paddle, your glasses, your hat).

Background noise is annoying. I really wanted to watch but couldn't tolerate it.
