To all the people who are asking why not take lunch with you? In mumbai you have to commute a lot and offices start at either 9 or 10 and to reach there you have to leave at 7 or 8 depending where you live . Lunch time is between 1 to 2 pm . Now imagine making lunch so early in morning and carrying it in humid weather for hours . It doesn't stay fresh. That's why lunch is delivered like this. Most Indians like eating fresh food. No weekly food prep here. No freezer lunches and no microwave dinners.

At first, I got confused, too, being not from Mumbai. But the comfort and nutrition from home cooked meals? I'd pay someone to fetch lunch from my mom's house, too.
I love India , even when its hard to explain , the system works . I wish I could have a fella show up with a great meal from my wife at lunch time , it would make me feel appreciated and loved , knowing it came from family, if I went and grabbed a soup and sandwich , I would feel lonely and disconnected. angry at work as they take time away from family . Sometimes western ways are not the best In Australia , the outback , I had a cookee prepare my daily ration the night before , it was good . However I drove a tractor for 16 to 18 hours a day very lonely job . After school the bosses kids wanted a ride in large tractor , bosses wife liked me being nice to kids , as she picked up kids , also bringing me todays lunch , the boss was glad I was keeping his wife happy. I was happy to feel part of family. Same thing
The most honest comment man. The feminists might not like your comments and here in India too the leftist communist feminist would attack traditions and customs as patriarchal and club the good bad ugly together under one light spreading negatively and hate destroying our India ways of living. Women being home makers just need some laws that protect and ensure rights as giving them employment benefits or salary sharing or minimum support money so that they get freedom to do apart from cooking cleaning and kids. Sadly most women cannot find time for anything especially after kids and husband need catering. These are the negative sides to the scenario but not necessarily unhappy situations depends on how needs and greeds and ambitions are managed.
American wife married to a Russian man, here. I am pro-traditional marriage and roles and despise the cancer called Western feminism. My husband works, I have recently had to reduce my work hours due to health problems, but I do make some money doing some work from home (I'm an artisan craftsman) but my most important job is that of a wife. We are, unfortunately, childless for a number of reasons and I wish I could change that, but we go on. One of the things that gives me most joy in life is cooking for and serving food to my hard working husband. I can say with just about absolute certainty that this provides him with a great amount of happiness, as well. There is no greater happiness than preparing meals for those you love. Even when my Dad was alive, I loved cooking for him! Just something about hardworking men enjoying something delicious, hot, and nourishing made by hands that love him really satisfies my heart. Knowing that there is a service dedicated to providing this wholesome joy to millions of Dads, husbands, grandfathers and brothers who would otherwise have a cold, lonely sandwich made by some pimple faced teenager that stands around with his hands down his pants and doesn't wash his hands after he poops, eaten off a piece of wax paper, or maybe some greasy food truck samonella salad, or who would just as soon skip lunch and wait for dinner, makes me happy. That there is a society that thinks it is important enough to have this service, still going strong, in this rotten world gives me hope for humanity.
for people who find this service useless... Most of the Indian(traditional) families do not like to consume food stored in fridges over night and have it microwaved! ( yes they do not commonly have microwaves at home) as they prepare food two times or three commonly!! and regarding the centralized kitchens idea... they are multi cultural and have a wide variety of food habits and its mostly impossible to cater what they want! and spice levels of each individuals is very different and the centralize kitchens can not serve every individual who have health problems and can only have or prefer specific oils and spices or items! and finally nothing beats food made by mom and this service lets her to make the the food in no rush!!
Not to mention eating out is expensive in India. It's not like the West where you get packaged junk at rates cheaper than food prepared in the kitchen.
"Africa"?!?!?!?! Oh yes! I also loved that time I was in Europe and I used to eat European food and lived in a European town!?!?!? DA FUK! WHICH AFRICAN COUNTRY!
Reminds me of the noodle delivery men of South Korea. These couriers are known by their iconic stainless steel heat boxes, riding a Vespa scooter. You could be ordering from literally anywhere in the city and they *Will* find you somehow, and miraculously not spill a single drop of soup even if you order from the top of a mountain. From time to time they are also referred to as "Bullet Men" since they travel so fast, although the title can sound sinister if you take it out of context. They are hard working, honest men... well... at least most of them are, and have nothing to do with putting people six feet under. ( Coughs nervously )

This was...shocking. 200,000 people getting their lunches from one company that runs based on using trains and bikes. Along with this they do that at all in one day with enough people to do it. With so many people, they are somehow able to have them work well enough to succeed in their deliveries. Mistakes being 0.01% as she said. This is true success in a company of I've ever seem it. What confuses me is why do people want their lunch delivered if they made it themself? Why not bring it to their work themselves. It doesn't seem the delivery service does anything to keep them cooled from what I've seem and heard.
Noah Henderson Well in Mumbai ,to reach your office on time people need to first catch up a train competing with almost millions of people then travel hours standing then again take up a rickshaw to reach the office. And then if you wait for the cooking part early morning then you are going to miss the train adding another hour. So people prefer dabewalas to deliver
Atharva Pande Now it makes sense. I see your point too, but I think you outlined it more in your second part. Waiting for it to be cooked. I didn't think about how it's probably easier for the women of the household if there are any to make it a little later and then have it delivered by this service. Saw a comment about it. I blame the fact I'm used to that gender role disappearing slowly in the states. I can see the rush to work being problematic too, but I would think they would also have to carry something to bring some supplies to work? Plus lunches shouldn't weigh that much? A human can only eat so much weight in a sitting.
That's amazing, I just came here,as I just finished Dan Pink Book called When, explaining the life of Dabawallas and the importance of their job, the connection that they are making between job and home, People needing to go to work sometime before 7, which is too early for anybody in the household to prepare a fresh descent indian style Lunch. Reading it I could imagine the chaos of Mumbai but the real image is even worst that I imagine. Huge Respect
This is so interesting. I wish I could wat lunch from home. This reminds me of a girl I used to work with. Her father always brought her food just made by her mother. They live close to the office and her old man used to arrive on his bycicle. What a luxury.
question, what language do you think in? I'm bilingual, speaking English and Spanish, but because English was my first language I think in English, so do people's subconsciouses think in their first/main language?
I love questions like these. Typically, people think with their native language, but it is possible to switch to thinking in your secondary language if you've spent a lot of time surrounded by it. I think in both English, German, and French sometimes. Kinda hectic, but still works out.
A1or ok i ask my self this question all the time lol! Almost all of the time i think in English rather than Hindi. I think that's because i started learning English around the age of 5 and as i started speaking more of it in daily dialogue, i also started thinking in it haha
I've been interested in this system ever since I saw the Top Gear special and India. These guys are remarkably reliable, but I have to think that centralized kitchens cooking food close to where most people are working would be more efficient in terms of human labor and the energy used for cooking.
And that's why most of the world doesn't do this. It's completely frivolous luxury. But hey, when you have a massive country filled with very poor people, you can afford to waste labour.
@seigeengine at least we give them jobs that way. There is nothing wrong in it, they are very happy and proud to do it. It way better than many jobs where you just push buttons or pull levers
Lunch in India is not Hamburger or Pizza. It's a proper lunch like Rice, Roti, Daal (lentil), Vegetables., Curd, Chutney etc. Hence u can't prepare all these within 8 am in the morning. So that's where the Dabba wallah comes in.
Just when you are at the peak of stress in the office, a lunchbox from home arrives on your desk. Virtually connecting you and your wife who cooked it. Then you restart the other half of the day with renewed energy. I am not an Indian so the closest thing I had was only a tiffin service when I was there. Still it felt so warming.
Amazing!! 4 mistakes out a million!!!! WOW! We all can learn something from them. Accuracy and the value of a home cooked lunch!! Very cool story, thanks for sharing!
I admit to taking this service for granted during my school time and now when I have to eat lunch at 4 pm or late , I finally appreciate the Dabbawala , these guys work so hard and make sure that no one works on an empty stomach , tremendous respect for these guys!
Why? 1. Home made food. Restaurant food could punch a hole in your pocket as well as in your intestine. 2. Humid climate could ruin the food easily. Fresh food in India won't involve refrigeration and microwave. 3. We are spending what we have in abundance for a small luxury: Human resource. 4. An employment opportunity for a large group of people. 5. Morning commute is pretty difficult, considering the tightly packed buses and trains. Everyone resorts to public transport. One less bag to carry could make a difference.
I could read many comment's about why dont they carry lunches with them in the morning and reheat and refrigerate it and bla bla bla. Let me get this straight: We Indians can eat re-heated and hotel food utmost for few days, after that we need fresh hot Ghar ka khana (home cooked meal) else our stomach wont count it as a meal, not even reheated one. This system is best example of management and even studied in the curriculum due to its huge accuracy and reliability. Its been there for many years n those who stay in Mumbai can only know the real need for it.
Mumbai is densely populated city and is huge. So people come to mumbai to work from 60-70kms as well. They get out of their homes at 6AM for local trains, and get at their jobs by 8:30AM where traveling time for them is 2 hours. It is not possible to prepare lunches so early hence they use dabbawala service where they can handover the dabba(tiffin) at 8:45AM and it will reach its destination by 11AM. Hope it makes sense.
These guys are damn hard working. Dabbawalas are the perfect example of Six Sigma. Even during flood or other natural disasters, you will get your tiffin delivered by them. Respect.
I HV learnt from comments below that foreign people (not all) are ignorant and dumb.. 1- mother/wife cooks the food (in most cases) for her son/daughter/husband 2-not every work place has microwave 3-preparing both (breakfast and lunch) in the morning is a tough task in India as it takes 2 hrs for usual dishes (more time for spacial days) 4-and in india mothers/wives are housewife(mostly) but it will not be the case same with next gen. 5-mother/wife do this bcz they love and care for their children and husband(so home ministry is in their hands). 6- by 11:00 -1:00(lunch time) lunch reaches the workplace trough dabbawala service 7-dabbawala service is not used by everyone working man . and this service is not available in other parts of India (from what I have learned till now) And English is tough😓
I must admit I'm a bit jealous 😂 Wish I could have my lunch delivered to me all nice and fresh like this without lugging it around and ruining it, or having to worry about some asshole stealing it from the stupid community fridge -_-
Pretty handy service. It helps ease lunch crowd and traffic, and avoid hot weather. Can stay air condition indoor, nap and back to work. Pretty neat stuff also help employment. Fresh home made lunch is good to have. You work so hard why eat microwave reheated crap.
So much respect for these men for what they do, but let's also recognize the millions of people who are preparing fresh lunches for their loved ones every day!
For The Idiots. the-"why not bring it yourself"-guys In Mumbai thing go fast, most works usually starts 6 or 7 a.m. some@5 or earlier, and Indians like fresh homemade foods.... a lunch made at early morning will not be fresh at noon..
Mumbai runs because of these dabbawalas. The most accurate service to get your dabba delivered, in the extreme chaos of mumbai. They had one separate chapter in my schools English textbook.
why are you questioning a society of 12 mill ppl why they do or do not bring their lunch when they go? U think that food stays warm the first 4 hours then they eat?
To be fair, I think it's kind of ridiculous. The idea of having someone bring me my lunch from my house because I can't manage to not have a fresh homecooked meal once a day would probably make me hang myself.
Great Big Story, you could've explained better. For 2 minutes, I was wondering why people didn't just take their lunch with them. If it weren't for the people wondering the same thing and getting verbally attacked for asking in the comments, I would've thought it was the world's best unnecessary delivery service.
At first I thought "why not just bring your lunch with you?" but I'm getting the impression many commute far away and by the time it is lunch time, it would be cold/lukewarm and the microwave takes away some of the flavor. I'm also getting the impression that for this service to work someone needs to be at home cooking? So would it work something like this (?) - you go to work, someone at home cooks your lunch while your at work, the dabba picks it up (at what time?), and then gets it sorted with all the other deliveries, brings you lunch so that way it tastes more fresh and is still nice and warm (?), then after you're done with lunch the dabba picks it back up and brings it home? Am I getting this right? lol I'm genuinely curious!
its Indian culture... someone needs to be home means obviosely a wife or mother who prepare lunch for their husband or son... we have family system where woman generally take care of whole family and man takes responsibilties of earning money.. but in family where both are working they dont need dabbawala becuse both carry their lunchboxes with them.. one more thing almost all Indian population prefer to cook and eat at home .. that too freshly prepared.. unlike western world.. where people eat outside or eat fast food or stored food.. its all about differences in culture .. thats why most people ask same questions why not bring lunchboxes ?? the simple answer is either they have their own family who really love them.......
Not to mention India is not that rich and continuous usage of microwave everyday gonna make the company having a nightmare to settle with electric bill.
They all go through this effort because someone at home wants to bring you the best meal. It's an exchange of love. These dabbawalas work hard because they want to make sure everyone receives the love that was sent to them.
Great snapshot of life in India. By the way, there's a man in Japan who sells curry from a vending machine. That could be an alternative to the customers. 😂#justsaying
Indian cuisine is very diverse. Some like vegetarian dishes, some non vegetarian, done like their for salty, some bland. There are atleast 10 unique dish belonging to a particular state and there are 29 States in India, so that makes it 290 dishes. And do you know there are more than hundred variety of curry? #justinforming
The trains are tightly packed. Preparing Indian food takes a long time People have to leave their home as early as 5 in the morning to reach their office. Hot food taste much better than cold food. Etc., Etc.,
Wow!! People may always have some things to rant about India but at the end of the day, they're still some of the most hardworking people in the world. How they do this is just amazing.
To be fair, you can't disagree with me that a proper homemade meal beats a turkey sandwich in a brown bag any day, and it's supposedly cheaper than paying for some McDonalds over there.
alongforthememories many women using this delivery system are working women and many do cook for other people. It's called catering services. Don't just write bullshit to counter the above person's comment
Maya A unfortunately the video never explains this does it? However I think it's bullshit that the first commenter made some comment about only the women the make the food, as if men can't and must be the breadwinners
alongforthememories It's a short clip. Of course it cannot fit everything in it. However I think people should not just randomly comment without having any proper knowledge about the system. You getting it from the video or not. My comment is not about you making a harsh comment. It's about you not making an effort to understand the system and then making an ignorant comment. The way our friend above made. I hope you get this now 😃
This video explained the "what" and most of the "how", but I had to read the comments to discover the "who" and especially the "why". There really should have been another minute explaining why this system exists and why so many workers in Mumbai prefer it to alternatives. That everyone in the comments is asking about, explaining, or looking for the rest of the story that was left out of the video proves that it they are basic, obvious questions that should have been answered in the video.
It's stupid, There getting your lunch from your house just to give it back to you and then take it home again. Why can't they just bring there lunch home and back by themselves.
Indians love homemade, proper meals. Considering the population in India, the traffic is ridiculous enough you'd want to leave early for work-before your lunch is even done. It's a comfort they can afford, if nothing else. Your food is healthier this way and cheaper too. Hours are long and getting home takes quite some time too. You don't have time to make food in the AM when you want a full night's rest after a long day. The last thing you want is your mother or significant other to wake up at an inhumanely early time to make your lunch that will eventually get soggy.
yeah just take your food that your spouse make at least 4 in the morning so you could go at 5 and not missed work at 7. Then reheat it at 12 for lunch, that assuming you're the only one to bring food from home and don't have to wait for the microwave to be empty (if thers any at work) Also consider "food" is not always cold sandwich. For me normal food is rice, vegetables, and other protein if thers any. If you have tried packing those in lunch box you know you have to cool it down first so it don't get soggy (means another time needed to prepare). Reheating decrease the food quality, both nutritional value and taste cs the traditional food meant to be served hot. Buying food might cost a lot of money and you still have to go out of office and back again if there's no cafeteria. With this the person at home that makes you food could wake up in humane time, buy fresh vegetables at morning market (not some leftover from yesterday or any low nutrition quickies just so you're not late), make rice and everything, pack and hand it to delivery so you could eat warm fresh homemade food from your loved one. That my friend, is a culture difference. I'm not Indian living in mumbai so thers no service like this here but we also have some culture similarity so I could understand the motivation. I even have some occasion when was a kid where my mom delivered my luch. Class started at 7 and the whole process from buying veggies to cooking takes quite a while.

I kept my boss’s wife happy too. She rode my tractor everyday I tell ya

Correct. That is what they said in the video
They got their priorities right in Mumbai!
for people who find this service useless...
That's true! And it also provides employment to people.
But I’m single & live alone

They drive scary fast on the footpath/sidewalk.
It's the freshly cooked food that theyre after.. this is not everyone in Mumbai.. but those people who have someone at home who will make them lunch and snacks fresh , use this service... its actually not at all about the space. It's not really cattle cars there is a reservation system and some of the trains( locals that function for very small distances and for a few minutes are crowded ) .. I've been living in India(mumbai ) for two years now. It's just the fresh hot food. Another important factor is that Indian food is elaborate.. keeping things in a lunch pail for 4-6 hours can damage its texture , consistency taste and in the hot and humid weather here might even go bad in the summer by the evening. Plus its not that the women cook for the men , men are the sole breadwinners, there are people who run small scale businesses of preparing home made meals for these working men and women.
Noah Henderson
Well in Mumbai ,to reach your office on time people need to first catch up a train competing with almost millions of people then travel hours standing then again take up a rickshaw to reach the office.
Noah Henderson and there Hot Lunches for a hot ass place
Himanshu Nimbalkar I would disagree. A company is a commercial business. A business is someone's regular occupation.

question, what language do you think in? I'm bilingual, speaking English and Spanish, but because English was my first language I think in English, so do people's subconsciouses think in their first/main language?
I love questions like these. Typically, people think with their native language, but it is possible to switch to thinking in your secondary language if you've spent a lot of time surrounded by it. I think in both English, German, and French sometimes. Kinda hectic, but still works out.
asdfgmustafa I can understand it too but I still read the subtitles lol.
They're actually delivering home cooked food. As in food from the customer's home prepared by the customer's mom/wife.That's what makes it special.
And that's why most of the world doesn't do this.
It's completely frivolous luxury.
But hey, when you have a massive country filled with very poor people, you can afford to waste labour.
it is actually cheaper to get your homemade food from dabbawala, then Eat out everyday . the service cost if less then US $8 a month.

Fun fact about these error free operators: Most of them haven't even studied past middle school.
While in the US, food delivery drivers eat your food on the way.

So fascinating to see what these guys can achieve without using lots of modern tech (like apps or phones), but 125 year old techniques and methods!
I admit to taking this service for granted during my school time and now when I have to eat lunch at 4 pm or late , I finally appreciate the Dabbawala , these guys work so hard and make sure that no one works on an empty stomach , tremendous respect for these guys!
Let’s be honest these guys are
the best human delivery people, but Korea has the best delivery network.
Why?
Its been there for many years n those who stay in Mumbai can only know the real need for it.
salute for a hardworking and reliable Indian Mumbai man.
These logistic is the cutest that I have ever known
India is all kinds of awesome.
I had no idea, this is amazing!
These guys are basically god tier delivery men. That level of accuracy without complex sorting and tracking tech is mind blowing.
These guys are damn hard working. Dabbawalas are the perfect example of Six Sigma. Even during flood or other natural disasters, you will get your tiffin delivered by them. Respect.
Even with a rating system and tips Uber eats have a 70% accuracy lol
I HV learnt from comments below that foreign people (not all) are ignorant and dumb..
1- mother/wife cooks the food (in most cases) for her son/daughter/husband
2-not every work place has microwave
3-preparing both (breakfast and lunch) in the morning is a tough task in India as it takes 2 hrs for usual dishes (more time for spacial days)
4-and in india mothers/wives are housewife(mostly) but it will not be the case same with next gen.
5-mother/wife do this bcz they love and care for their children and husband(so home ministry is in their hands).
6- by 11:00 -1:00(lunch time) lunch reaches the workplace trough dabbawala service
7-dabbawala service is not used by everyone working man . and this service is not available in other parts of India (from what I have learned till now)
And English is tough😓

Noah Henderson most of the people here are just talking shit even after explaining it to them
To be fair, I think it's kind of ridiculous. The idea of having someone bring me my lunch from my house because I can't manage to not have a fresh homecooked meal once a day would probably make me hang myself.
Its called ice, pretty easy to find

Am I getting this right? lol
I'm genuinely curious!
You are right
You got every point geniusly right
its Indian culture... someone needs to be home means obviosely a wife or mother who prepare lunch for their husband or son... we have family system where woman generally take care of whole family and man takes responsibilties of earning money.. but in family where both are working they dont need dabbawala becuse both carry their lunchboxes with them.. one more thing almost all Indian population prefer to cook and eat at home .. that too freshly prepared.. unlike western world.. where people eat outside or eat fast food or stored food.. its all about differences in culture .. thats why most people ask same questions why not bring lunchboxes ?? the simple answer is either they have their own family who really love them.......
Not to mention India is not that rich and continuous usage of microwave everyday gonna make the company having a nightmare to settle with electric bill.
Why can't you freakin understand that Indians prefer fresh homemade food. Every culture is different! Stop making toxic comments.

Apparently a turkey sandwich in a brown paper bag doesn't cut it in India.
Jonny Wishbone Indians prefer a full meal of lentil soup(daal), rice, vegetable curry(dry or gravy), chapati bread etc.

Jonny Wishbone Different cultures have different lifestyles and food, who would've thought..

This video explained the "what" and most of the "how", but I had to read the comments to discover the "who" and especially the "why". There really should have been another minute explaining why this system exists and why so many workers in Mumbai prefer it to alternatives. That everyone in the comments is asking about, explaining, or looking for the rest of the story that was left out of the video proves that it they are basic, obvious questions that should have been answered in the video.
hats off to these hard working people.may god give u lots of courage daily
It's stupid, There getting your lunch from your house just to give it back to you and then take it home again. Why can't they just bring there lunch home and back by themselves.
also, there jobs if people bring there lunches the jobs would be lost and then they would starve
The last thing you want is your mother or significant other to wake up at an inhumanely early time to make your lunch that will eventually get soggy.
why dont they just bring their lunches with them?
yeah just take your food that your spouse make at least 4 in the morning so you could go at 5 and not missed work at 7. Then reheat it at 12 for lunch, that assuming you're the only one to bring food from home and don't have to wait for the microwave to be empty (if thers any at work)
Also consider "food" is not always cold sandwich.
Class started at 7 and the whole process from buying veggies to cooking takes quite a while.
cool, thanks for educating me :)
