    I bought this saw and then watched the video right before unpacking it. I felt like I made a mistake and almost took it back. I'm glad I didn't... it worked brilliantly! I started by ripping 3/4" plywood (8' long). Perfect, straight, and easy cut... even with the stock ryobi saw blade!

    My man, great job doing your review. I just bought and used this saw and it is fantastic. Some of us don't mind being good at what we do and using "squares" and "Measuring tapes" (I'll put a link down below with definitions for these items for you) to make sure that our cuts come out right. You know like, "Measure twice, cut once." If you want every tool you have to do all the work for you at every step, you might be better off hiring a competent person to just go ahead and do the work. Cheers!

    Strange that people are led to believe they should get the refinement of a Powermatic table saw selling for $3 to $5,000 now for the price of a Ryobi craft saw, I have one of these saws and had Powermatic saws too. Being a cabinet maker for over 50 yrs.
    Ryobi is the best bang for the buck no doubt.

    What do you expect from a $120 saw? Don’t be so tough on it. I used it several times and it gave me very decent cuts. I would give this saw a B+

      For sure but these are some things I didn't realize nor paid attention to before buying otherwise I would have saved a little more for the next step. If you have time on your hands, squaring off the fence is no problem.

    Thanks for your video. As you pointed out, this Ryobi RTS08 has many flaws and Ryobi is aware of them. The sloppy fence is easily corrected by using two speed squares...one on each end of the fence side opposite the blade. I found that once squared that way, the fence can be aligned reasonably. Adding a solid MDF sacrificial fence board to the fence makes it more sturdy. I used a good ruler and a Sharpie to mark the kerf line right on the table surface, and that helps to get a more accurate cut. As for the miter gauge sloppy fit in the miter channel; that is the most common complaint on nearly all inexpensive table saws. The very simple fix that will solve that problem is to wrap the miter guage guide with shrink wrap, heat the shrink wrap around the guide, and it will fit snuggly and still travel easily within the miter slot. And yes; you CAN make a miter sled to work with the single miter slot, because I did it.
    The REAL problem is that once you square up the fence, measure the distance to the kerf line, snug the miter gauge or add a good miter sled: then you find out that the riving knife on the RTS08 is very easily knocked out of alignment with the saw blade (if it ever was in alignment to begin!). The out-of-alignment riving knife is the real culprit with most cut accuracy problems involving this table saw, and it is very difficult to access the lower locking bolt for it.
    Once both locking nuts are loosened, it is a nightmare to get the riving knife to stay aligned as you manually wiggle it into alignment, tighten the bolts, and lower the saw blade. Most of the time, the riving knife will go out-of-alignment again and it will throw off your cuts once the stock you are cutting reaches the riving knife. That will also lead to kickback due to the stock being pinched by the riving knife. Most of the defenders of this table saw don't care that much about accuracy within a 16th of an inch...and for many DIY projects, that's okay. They can sand down the inaccuracies. However; the safety issue caused by kickback due to a poorly aligned riving knife is something that will come back to haunt Ryobi if it is not addressed.

      My dads never had a riving knife on the table saws that he has owned for the exact reason of them making cutting the wood problematic and inaccurate. I’ve used his table saw my whole life growing up and never even knew what a riving knife was until someone I knew bought a new one 😅

    Hey people don't be so quick to crap on this young man for posting his OPINION on this product. Many people are slagging him saying "what do you expect" well I personally think it is reasonable to expect a product to perform as advertised. Crazy idea EH! We have just come to expect and accept that manufactures can sell crap and the consumer will just go along for the ride. When doing initial tooling for a production run of a product it doesn't take a whole lot more effort to make something that actually works and develop a reputation for reliability and quality.

    Yes, we all know you get what you pay for and I am in no way a professional woodworker. I got this saw from a guy who must have realized this was not the saw for him. I, however, like this saw, it does what I need it to so I would say, it is, what it is. It's not the worst saw on the market, rather a saw for beginners, who aren't working with minute detail. One thing I'm curious about, why do you have this saw? Were not those items you mentioned apparent when you bought it? Thanks.

    • @woodshop8212

      At the time there was not a review out there that mentioned the things I mentioned in this video. It was one of my mistakes that I went with a purchase price versus I saw that actually had some quality behind it. It is a cheap saw but for not much more you can get a way better saw. I would not recommend this song for even beginners as it is so tough to use that you won't get as nice or consistent cuts compared to a model up or different brand. That is my opinion

    For my DIY needs, I got this saw with a Ryobi 12amp battery and a 60T Diablo blade. Wow! It really performs. I just have to check and re-check the measurements before each cut, which takes 15 seconds. I would never whine about the nuances raised. I love its performance (w/ 12amp and 60T blades), weight, and portable size. My .02 👍

    The fence is not quite as bad as made out in the video. Using it the way as shown it is very floppy. I use the fence and it stays dead straight. There is a bit of a fiddle to it. You need to sweep all the saw dust out of the groove. Pull back on the locking handle, keep pulling back on the handle while you lock the fence down into position. Providing the fence has been adjusted to square when you originally purchased the saw it will stay straight. I'm using a ten year old fence and it holds true. Also the calibrated measure ruler on the front is amazingly accurate. Set it to your desired setting (which admittingly takes care) and the cut will be centre of the blade. For a cheap saw it's not to bad actually.

    You are too critical. For the price it seems to be good one. I ordered one and am eager to try it out. Even if it is not perfect I will keep it. I have this exact same saw. My fence snugs down way tighter than yours and is square and true. Perhaps you should have spent the time it took you to film and post your video contacting Ryobi instead? I paid $119 at Home Depot with free delivery, wasn’t expecting a professional saw. Nice little saw for home use, professional carpenters should look elsewhere and pay the big money.

    • @woodshop8212
      @woodshop8212  2 года назад +1

      That's fair. This video is what to expect for the price. My fence snugs down tight but with this system it does not force square. It is unreliable for multiple repositioning or micro adjustable. Yes it is not a top line saw but there was no video out at the time showcasing what to expect for a buyer. Ryobi does have some gems but in my opinion this is not and not worth the money and for a few bucks more, you can get a lot better saw.

    It has the same clamp system as their table top wet saw that I have. If you line it up by the marks top and bottom your fine. I'm getting this for some small projects. This line of tools are fine for the average Joe. If I was doing it for a living that's different. The wet saw worked just fine for 12 x 24 tile. It's what you pay and what you expect for that price.

    Yup, spot on, cheap saw, totally dislike the fence, cheap crap, and the the mitre guide more garbage. Good for real small work, no ripping wood or cutting sheets of plywood. That fence setup is on other cheap saws, totally frustrating, constantly have to setup the squareness and parallelism to the blade. Had a HF similar, threw it out at the end of the driveway, just plain junk.
    Buy the Dewalt, 8 1/4” with a cog drive(rack and pinion) fence setup, much better for the DIYer or home garage setup, then there is a cpl of other high end saws, for a small fortune sadly. Thanks for sharing the honest real post

    I got this saw, $149.95, not the $185 mentioned here. Yes, I already have a much bigger and better table saw; this one is extra for quick and less demanding jobs. I admit that I wish the table had two slots, especially because I prefer using a slot to the left of blade. Also, because the slot is formed in a strange way, and not simply rectangular like on a cast iron table, it seems more "iffy" to replace the somewhat loose miter gauge. I will do something to correct the miter gauge wiggle. I do disagree with this video demonstration of a very "off" and loose fence. Sure, this style fence is not of the highest caliber, but mine does not flop around like in the video. It slides quite smoothly because I adjusted the tension nut for best performance. I think it will work just fine. Of course I realize one cannot expect perfect performance from an inexpensive saw like this, but I really think it will perform just fine as my 2nd table saw. I was happy with the price, and glad I did not resort to the Warrior table saw from Harbor Freight which was just $120 on sale.

    There's actually a trick to using the clamp. You push it in while sliding it across and it stays square.......

    • @woodshop8212
      @woodshop8212  2 года назад +1

      Yikes... a trick? How do you get it to land on your measurement precisely on the fly? multiple attempts to get bang on your desired measurement? I'm assuming you're talking about the fence clamp. How it is designed using the edge of the worktop, you cannot get repeatable, guaranteed squareness. without a rack & pinion style or similar mechanisms to run both ends together, you will never achieve square without a secondary reference tool.

    • @WTF_BBQ

      @@woodshop8212
      Mine actually works okay. At first I was very disappointed with the fence, and got fairly angry that it wouldn't stay square, but after playing around with a bit, I learned i had to push it against the rails while sliding it to the desired distance. Surprisingly, it stayed square for me.
      I thought about marking the table with permanent marker so I can have multiple references to make sure the fence was squared wherever I decide to move it, but it wasn't necessary.
      It's obviously not a great system, but i have no other choice but to work with it. My biggest gripe is probably the lever that changes the angle of the blade. The markings aren't accurate and the blade will change angle over time.

    • @woodshop8212
      @woodshop8212  2 года назад +1

      Pushing it lightly from the middle definitely has a better chance of keeping it square. The design of the fence cannot guarantee a square move of the fence. It is not equipped with any system to run both ends of the fence when moving it.

  • @Amigatech
    @Amigatech 2 года назад +7

    I was also disappointed by the single groove for features such as a cross-cut sled. However, it can still be done. Just let the left side track bar run flush along the outer left edge of the table. I have also found that when I align the fence, it stays square if you lightly tap it into position near the center of the blade. Again, not ideal, but it works for me. Yes, the full price is way too high for the compromises, but I got mine from Direct Tools for only $63.99. Also, such a small table and short fence makes cutting plywood sheets a challenge, so I would recommend building a base, and some same-height outfeed tables to make the space work for that. I use mine exclusively in an open carport, so I wasn't concerned about dust collection. I just blow it out with my leaf blower when I am done. I appreciate your review, and I know better saws are out there, but I prefer to look for solutions to just make it work the best that it can even though it has some unfortunate limitations out of the box.

    bro. brobrobro. slow down. The tablesaw, which I do own, is the lowest priced compact jobsite unit on the market. Therefore, ANY WORKING MAN will expect these issues with this saw. I will never use this saw without a carpenters square handy to square up my guard. I expected that because i payeed less than 150 for the thing. If you want a 1500 dollar table saw, BUY ONE.

    Since I do a lot of projects without grid power at my cabin, this saw has turned out to be ideal. Just finished cabinet face frames where I had to rip 100" stiles, and they were perfect. The best table saw is only accurate if the operator is willing to set it up correctly. Is this 18v saw ideal for the commercial finish carpenter? Of course not, but it is the only battery operated table saw I know of on the market.
