So wonderful how he shares his learning experience with self-deprecation and devastating virtuosity. I just love, love, love his PRS guitar. Not a cheap ride but how magical it sounds in his hands.
What a fantastic lesson. So many years of obvious hours and hours of practice condensed in to one 11 minute video. This not only goes for this style of music but everything else in the industry. reading between the lines there is an exceptional amount of knowledge this humble man is actually telling you that you can expand in to other regions of music. I love it. What a lesson.
hiya love the way you cascade your sounds , played a lot of half assed tunes in my day , im gonna tackle this piece , when i have some proogress ill post it ...cheers 4 the inspiration .....
Great tips. I first saw this a few months ago, introduced to DADGAD at that time too. Since then My skill level has improved a lot. I have even come up with some original melodies I hope to share soon. For any other new guitar players; Highly recommend listening to his advice.
that ornamentation is very cool and unique to that style. would be helpful to see a video/lesson on how to create that ornamentation. sounded very cool with the flat pick too. beautiful playing and guitar. great lesson.
Thank you for your musical insights-additionally, it's fun to approach a transcription after you have fixed on your own to compare ideas regarding accompanying chord and rhythm progressions, as well as the influence of fingering on slurs and other ornaments.
well, that's the problem with excellent guitarists like Mr.McManus: they make it look simple, we nearly understand what they explain, but indeed , it is years of practice to barely approach their pplaying level. Anyway, it is so informative, thank you very much for this lesson !
Thank you loverly clip. May I ask How do you manage to keep your right-hand fingernails from wearing or splitting? I have tried heavy-duty nail polishes etc to no avail? I play acoustic and electric contemporary music and some folk and incorporating playing a little mandolin and banjo depending on the material of choice but end up at times doing dreadful things to my nails. I don't like flat picks particularly but sometimes it is a necessity, I can't stand and won't wear thumb picks or finger picks even for the banjo. I like to physically feel what I play. Any suggestions (constructive) would be welcome
Christopher Clarke ~~~It’s a good idea to use a polish. I’ve had to take meds since I was 8 and they have destroyed my bones and nails. So now I’m on a 600mg per day vit D with calcium plus if you eat eggs, salmon, oatmeal and any kind Of beans your making them strong from the inside!! Hope it helps ya keep on playin
@@richardsmith5477 Mmm that could be problematic for some food items as I am vegan (lol). the Vit D or oatmeal beans & lentils are no issue it is what I usually consume (almost anything plant-based) I used a heavy-duty American made nail polish but to no avail, I guess the search will continue for solutions. Thank you for your response and enjoy and have a safe festive season. Cheers.
Case in point...I was born in Ireland, raised listening to jigs and reels all my life...I can write music and compose a good song at the drop of a hat ..can I back or play jigs or reels .no way.. as Tony said it's all in your head... So don't be discouraged if you cannot play this stuff.
mcmanustony it’s probably the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen, this man must have been a genius when he decided to put little birds in the fretboard... as an Irish American boy, have often found myself longing for a shore I’ve never seen and to play the music of my long-lost country, making music with the very birds that sing songs I’ve never heard.
Great video. Thanks Tony, I appreciate your help. If anyone knows of the song he plays in this video please comment. I have searched youtube, searching lots of 'Planxty' recordings and videos. It is not on 'The Black Album', 'After the Break', or on 'Words & Music'.

Why would it be in 432Hz? Despite what you think A=432 is not some mystical frequency, tuning has varied from A=398Hz to A=485Hz in the last 400 years, during the Celtic revival 440 was already the standard.
So wonderful how he shares his learning experience with self-deprecation and devastating virtuosity. I just love, love, love his PRS guitar. Not a cheap ride but how magical it sounds in his hands.
Great video. Gorgeous sound, the way the melodies flow and ring out in DADGAD is amazing.

We all have to appreciate Irish music if you like Bluegrass or Country the influence is insane I love it
Tony is a great guy and a wonderful artist. No pretense and within moments, he's made things easier, sounding better, and "flowing"! Cool!
Wonderful video! I’ve been learning classical and eyeing trad Celtic music as well - your videos are excellent!
lovely talented man ,, great musician
Thank you, so interesting and wonderful to listen to.
Awesome Tony!!!!
At 56 the realisation that with my few chords in standard tuning I am a finger painter watching Michelangelo paint the ceiling of the sisten chapel.
You get that feeling too eh?
What a beautiful, honest and useful lesson - how wonderful to get a window into your process - thank you so much!
Tony is a great teacher as well as player. Kudos!
Thank you for sharing! Awesome video
Magic, sir
Absolutely amazing
Your Sound is amazing, makes the sun comes out. I really will try this tuning.

Beautiful PRS guitar
Wow! Thanks a lot
Great presentation, well paced, informative and accessible, didn't just show off flashy finger pyrotechnics. Thank You Very much!
that ornamentation is very cool and unique to that style. would be helpful to see a video/lesson on how to create that ornamentation. sounded very cool with the flat pick too.
beautiful playing and guitar. great lesson.
Magic. Superb.
Great lesson. Thank you
Stumbled on this listening to some John Renbourne performances. What a great treat! Thanks for posting!
Great insights on offer there, thanks Tony. More please. :-)
Thank you! This is great!

such a great and gracious player
Who said “he who can’t do...teach”? This great artist is also great teacher, he is probably a great person too, some guy! Thanks for this insight
I feel there's one note which is sounding so off here .. it plays again n again ..
eg , at 6:31 part
Real cool
Great lesson Tony!
Masterclass from a True Master ⭐
Great presentation :)
Nice job, Tony! Great advice.
such a gent
Sweetness!
Great stuff! Really instructive!
Very good playing.
Really great lesson. Learn the melody first. Then add the embellishments around that. As opposed to memorizing a tab. Great playing.
a tip: you can watch movies at KaldroStream. I've been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@River Memphis yea, I have been watching on kaldrostream for years myself =)
@River Memphis Definitely, have been watching on Kaldrostream for since november myself =)
@River Memphis yup, have been using kaldroStream for since november myself :)

Good man Tony, even though Ive been playing DADGAD for years I always take something for your videos,
For the less, much less, musically advanced such as me, I rather liked the flat picking version. Yes, I could listen to it..............all day!.
Well done Tony - Learn the melody - Yes Yes Yes.
mSw
YOU 2 Tommy ans Tony My vest guitarist
I would be quite happy if I could play the guitar badly. I have been trying for about 50 years.

Almost 50 years of trying to be a guitar player...How have I never heard of this dadgad?? Btw, you are amazing, Sir!
Wow! - that's how I interpreted the hair standing up on the back of my neck.
After seeing this guy play the guitar...I got mine and threw it in the SKIP !!!
John Oconnor know the feeling, why do we torture ourselves watching these talented people ?
Not the skip!
Don't think that way.enjoy your playing on your terms don't ever compare yourself to anyone else there's only one you.
Case in point...I was born in Ireland, raised listening to jigs and reels all my life...I can write music and compose a good song at the drop of a hat ..can I back or play jigs or reels .no way.. as Tony said it's all in your head... So don't be discouraged if you cannot play this stuff.
Luckily babies dont say im not even going to attempt walking, they are so good at it
Liked the easy presentation, What's the guitar? .. cant make out the make.
It's a Paul Reed Smith, not sure of the exact model though
Its a PRS McManus signature model.....available to order from any PRS dealer!
Hey, a guitar player who isn't afraid to voice his distaste for standard tuning, that's what you call bravery!
Even though he can play in it better than most of us.
no distaste for standard tuning. Just don't use it very much
This is great but I always have the sneaking suspicion that Tony has been in the pub all afternoon before recording it
Anyone know what brand and model of guitar he is playing, sounds so beautiful. Thanks!
It's a PRS McManus signature model

Very thoughtful advice. Thanks from a Cape Bretoner. Gorgeous guitar, by the way. If you don't mind me asking, who made it?
Its a PRS "McManus" signature model.

The tune is 'Tiocfaidh Tu Abhaile Liom'. It's the latter half of second track on the album "The Woman I Loved So Well"...
You have great fingernails. They must be difficult to maintain with metal strings. How do you do it?
what is this guitar ? quelle est cette guitare ?

What was that band he mentioned?
Planxty :)
What kind of guitar is that?
Is this the Krusty Krab?
No! It's Patrick
The fingernails on his left hand are a completely different color than his right! 😂
Tony would not original Celtic be in 432 Hz? Give it that haunting sound compared to the brightness of 440? Have you tried 432 for comparison?
Why would it be in 432Hz? Despite what you think A=432 is not some mystical frequency, tuning has varied from A=398Hz to A=485Hz in the last 400 years, during the Celtic revival 440 was already the standard.
and that's also how math should be taught in schools
I prefer flatpicking over fingerpicking.
Can't dance with fingerpicking.
first rule of acoustic guitar lose the flat pick.
why?
Ha - get out of that! :-)
No, not true at all, depends on what type of music and what style and technique you are using
That is true if you have hard nails…
Tell that to Tony Rice.
Thanks for no lesson lol
