buying packs with gems or gold is not a good idea if you also play limited formats. drafting is probably the most cost efficient way to get cards, even with an average win rate
You also forgot about jump in! Jump in, for 1k gold, you get 40 cards from the sets that a randomly chosen for you. It's super useful for beginners.

It really just depends on your financial situation. Not everyone has all the time to draft and grind all month long for a few stuff.
