  • Me and my friends did some viking hiking in late march. It was raining all day, but we had fun anyways.
In this video I'm reading s few stanzas from Hávamál with some viking age wisdom. If you are not familiar with Hávamál, it is a collection of old norse poems that was originally passed down through oral tradition, but was later written down. The oldest preserved text that contains Hávamál is the Codex Regius from around 1270.

    Look at these awesome people.
That's a thing I've been wanting to do for quite some time! A hike fully dressed.
    Super awesome video.

Thank you! 😊 Hiking in full gear is certainly fun. I hope that you get to do that soon.
All the best to you! 😊

I love hiking in the forest. I have to wait until spring to go up to the mountain forest behind the small town where live.

Unfortunately I never filmed it, because I made it such a long time ago. But it's just a long thin stem/branch that I steamed and bent into that U-shape. Then there are two horisontal straight pieces going across. One high and one low. Carved some notches in the pieces so they won't slide around and tied everything together. Perhaps I can show it in a future video. 🙂

This reminds me of what my Dad is always saying "It is a fool that thinks he is wise..." I'm pretty sure there's something like that in Havamal.....right? 🤔

    • @vikingventures3888

Yes, there is a verse in Hávamál like that. Something along the lines of that the fool thinks he is wise, but the wise man knows how little he knows.

👍Very nice! Can I ask what translation of the Hávamál you were using?

Thank you! If you are looking for an English version of Hávamál I would recommend Jackson Crawfords translation.
For the video I think I used some of the verses from his translation, and also translated some from Swedish myself 🙂

were their clothes really that bright?

    • @vikingventures3888
      @vikingventures3888  10 месяцев назад +1

Yes, bright colours were possible to create with plant dyeing. However it was expensive and therefore only used by the wealthy. Average people might afford more muted or lighter colours.
