Mending my medieval shift | Historical mending

I finally found the time to mend my 1360s shift. I'm using a technique that was common during medieval times in Scandinavia and Europe. Mending clothes was common during both the viking age and the middle ages. In this video I'm wearing my medieval dress, based on fashions from the 1360s. If you have any questions about viking or medieval clothing, food, etc feel free to ask. :) Instagram @_vik...

Me and my friends did some viking hiking in late march. It was raining all day, but we had fun anyways. In this video I'm reading s few stanzas from Hávamál with some viking age wisdom. If you are not familiar with Hávamál, it is a collection of old norse poems that was originally passed down through oral tradition, but was later written down. The oldest preserved text that contains Hávamál is ...

You look beautiful. I love the outfit.
Thank you so much! 😊
This is great but I totally can't see it happening down here. Our culture is very conservative, singing, dancing and generally any public display of joy or a personality is frowned up. Also, the natural environment I'm in isn't suitable for Viking re-enactment. ☹ You are lucky to be in a culture like yours and I find it heartening to watch these videos, thank you for sharing! 😊
May I ask where you are from? People who don't do reenactment usually think we are a bit odd and funny for dressing in Viking outfits and singing etc. But most people tend to like it anyway. I'm glad that I get to share a bit of this joy with you! Take care!
You reminded me of something a man said years ago "...men don't wear jewellery or beads." But I looked at history books that showed Celtic and Teutonic men wearing jewellery and beads. LOL Your video was very informative and cleverly put together. Love your work, mate!
Well, Viking age men most certainly wore jewelry. And I think it looks great on modern men as well. Thank you ❤️
Very nice video. I like what you said about "Historically Possible" and "Find Based". I've been involved in reenactment groups off and on for many years. Human beings can be quite unique, and there were most definitely individuals who wore interesting and functional garb that didn't survive the ages. I've always liked the idea that if it is historically possible, we should most likely relax and enjoy the event. It really frustrates me when I see the self-appointed fashion police commenting negatively on someone's garb at something like a renaissance faire. Anyway, thank you for your wonderful video!
Thank you so much! I'm glad that you agree that people should be allowed to have fun and not be criticised at events that does not have any demands regarding historical accuracy. All the best to you!
Sadly because of my disability I can't make period garb. I tried it once and it took 6 months JUST to piece together a frock coat which didn't fit properly. *sigh*
I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble making the garments that you would like. Perhaps you have someone you know who can sew that could help you? Sometimes me and my friends trade things instead of buying garments or gear. Perhaps you do or make something that can be traded with a friend? Would not have to be historical. 🙂
@@vikingventures3888 Most people are too busy to help or there's a clash of schedule. Trade would be good but I don't anything considered of value. The culture where I am, makes it very difficult to network. Your folks sound great though and I find your videos and responses heartening, than you for sharing! 😊
Groetjes Jonas
Hi! I'm sorry for my very late reply. Usually the rule of thumb with decorations for Viking age garments is that you can use thin strips of silk, or sometimes a thin kind of braid. Embroidery seems to mostly have been used on pillows or such things. However, I'm not really an expert on oseberg, so I'm sure there are other people who are more knowledgeable on that area. All the best to you!
This was really helpful, thank you!
I'm glad you think so! Thank you 😊
This reminds me of what my Dad is always saying "It is a fool that thinks he is wise..." I'm pretty sure there's something like that in Havamal.....right? 🤔
Yes, there is a verse in Hávamál like that. Something along the lines of that the fool thinks he is wise, but the wise man knows how little he knows.
I wish we had places like that where I live.
There must be some kind of interesting old places where you live? 🙂
@@vikingventures3888 Not really, my country's history tends to be very dull.
Norse women's clothing looks heaps cuddly and cozy! 😊
They are indeed 😊 Like walking around in a big blanket or pyjamas 😄
When I was a child I went through a stage when I wanted to be an archaeologist....sadly I was told I was too stupid by teachers to do anything other than labor work. I studied Norse history in college and it was a positive distraction through some harsh times. Anyway, I appreciate having Viking Ventures to come to and love your work, mate!
Sounds like you had stupid teachers (and I am a teacher, so I should know). I'm glad that you kept learning about things that you found captivating. And it does really mean a lot to me that I made something that managed to brighten your day. Hugs from Sweden!
Ah no, this is nice but that song.....Helvegan by Wardruna? To me it's a sad song, something you'd sing at a funeral. It's a good song and I like it.....just doesn't fit the video. Having said that they did the song very well!
I agree that it has a bit of a sad feel to it. But my friends were singing it at the event, and I wanted some good music for the video. A bit difficult to find fitting non-copyrighted music 🙂
@@vikingventures3888 I understand, your friends sound good though. If they did an Old Norse version of Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden I would be extremely impressed! It was my favorite song when I was 18 and studying Early Medieval History. I often wondered what a Nordic version of it wold be like.... 😃
The re-enactment group I was in had something like this, but it was an Anglo-Saxon village in a pine forest outside of our home state. I really liked it but sadly it burned down in the bushfires of 2019. 😔
I'm so sorry to hear that! Places like that are so important. 💔
👍Very nice! Can I ask what translation of the Hávamál you were using?
Thank you! If you are looking for an English version of Hávamál I would recommend Jackson Crawfords translation. For the video I think I used some of the verses from his translation, and also translated some from Swedish myself 🙂
@@vikingventures3888 Mange takk!
Thank you! You keep your information short, clear, and easy to follow and I really appreciate that!
Thank you! That was definitely what I was going for so I'm glad you think I succeeded 😊
For a moment then it looked like a very aggressive, Viking style pillow fight....
Hahaha yes, I can only agree 😄
It's harder to do medieval reenactment Down Under, as in trying to find the right setting is nearly impossible and winter is the best season as the clothing is too warm for our environment. Even then, most of us don't wear the complete kid (our winters are very mild). This video has been very informative, thank you! 😉
That does sound very challenging 😅 Viking clothing is definitely made for cold weather. I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you 😊
Very flattering
Thank you 🙂
I agree. I did fencing in the SCA and I remember we had a few Asian participating and that's fine. I also remember a Caucasian person involved in Samurai re-enactment, I figured that's fair enough and I totally understand the appeal. 😉
Exactly, as long as it is done in a respectful way, I think everyone should be fine with that.
@@vikingventures3888 Oh totally! But it's something I'm learning right now is how the Vikings often recruited people from foreign cultures. These people had different ways of doing things or new skills they found valuable.😉
Gretings from Ribe 🤗. Great video..keep on the good work...maby seeing you in Ribe viking center. År og fred
Thank you so much 😊 I hope to go to Ribe some day! I have friends who go there every year. All the best to you
My partner is indigenous north america (Swampy Cree) and had her first viking event this winter. she is portraying a Dorset woman from Greenland who would have interacted with vikings. She’s loving it and it has a big impact on the crowd realizing that the viking age was never a simple isolated thing
That is awesome! I love how many different ways there are of reenacting the Viking age. All the best to you and your wife 😊
Amazing advice! Subscribed!
Thank you very much 😊
I would like to know your opinion about hair in viking age, there is a lot of disagreement, like was always covered cause christian influences, also depending on the status, was just a linen piece of fabric to be more comfortable to make farming works... I am also reenactor, and i always have the hair covered cause indeed is more comfortable and also keep the hair cleaner
Hi :) Well, there are many depictions of women with visible hairstyles from the viking age. There are also at least one mention of it from the sagas. So I think it is safe to say that viking age women did show their hair when they wanted to. However, I think it's probably very likely that working women wore some sort of head covering to keep the hair clean, like you mention. I would also assume that more women would cover their hair if they had Christians close to them, since influences would have been stronger then. And of course more women would probably have covered their hair when Scandinavia was starting to become Christian in the end of the Viking age.
Is each layer slightly larger than the one before?
The wool dresses are the same size, but the coat is slightly wider in the shoulders and sleeves :)
Hello, I live in Hokkaido, the north end of Japan, the environment is so similar as your video, so I can imagine you feel comfort in winter forest😊 And in Japan, some shops are selling natural style clothing looks like yours, so your styling is really good for me! thanks a lot❤
Sorry for the extremely late reply. I donfeel comfort in the winter forest 😊 It's like being wrapped in softness. Im glad you like the clothes, and I agree that there are definitely similarities between the style of the clothes. All the best to you ❤️
Sheep in wolf's clothing
Are you trying to say that it's time for me to shave my legs? 😶
@@vikingventures3888 depends if you have blonde or black leg hair
Well am lucky because i wear lightweight soft linen under trousers and a thicker linen over trouser. With the same soft linen made sort under tunic and same thicker linen but to the knees over tunic. Most of the year. Then a to the bum wool tunic. Then a below the knee wool coat. But we don't get the snow you get in Northern Ireland. Oh my socks mittens leg wraps plus hood and rabbit fur in my ankle shoes. I don't feel the cold 😂
The snow does make it a little bit more difficult for sure 😄
I like to go there someday, part of my background is UK, Scandinavian.
It is definitely a wonderful place to visit 🙂
I’m guessing fur would have been involved if it was available?
There are a few examples of fur being used for trim on viking age garments, but most people would not wear fur at all. Wool fabrics are very warm, especially when worn in many layers.
✨💛✨
Merkelig,, jern kjeler eksisterte ikke i vikingetiden,, jern kjeler kom først på 1800 tallet...
There are many finds of iron pots and pans from the viking age. You can have a look at the Oseberg ship burial for example.
I’m convinced a woman that was very cold would wear anything underneath that kept her warm, socially acceptable or not. We do the same, and humans haven’t intrinsically changed. I love your clothes, thank you for showing us so clearly.
I agree. And I think perhaps the most important thing was to have a dress as the outer layer, to keep up appearances so to speak. Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it 😊
Great video! Q: how would women have had their hair? Having it loose hanging must've been very impractical?
Thank you :) Well, there are some depictions of hairstyles from the viking age. One of the figurines have her hair in a big knot on top of the head with the end of the hair hanging back sort of like a pony tail. But a normal braid was probably fairly common as well. Covering the hair with a shawl was probably common for working women to keep the hair clean. But I will say, as a person with rather long hair, that it does not get in the was nearly as much as one might think, even when loose :)
I found this video very interesting thankyou I lived off grid for a bit and used a handheld oil lamp with a glass shade it is my favorite so I was researching older methods to the glass lamps and came across your videos
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it 🙂 I love the old oil lamps with glass shades. They can be very cozy.
Morfar brukade göra en sån flöjt åt mig i våren
Vad häftigt! Tyckte du att den var lätt att spela på? 🙂
It’s hard to take any of todays outlooks and apply hem to the past with an ‘of course they did’ but I would not be surprised to learn Norse women wore some sort of trousers under a dress when cold was freezing fire, If not a trouser then maybe a thigh high legging or stocking. I do living history from the eighteenth century and can tell you that woolen leggings can make a world of difference
I suppose it is very possible that some women wore trousers under their dresses during the winter. We just don't know, as with so many things regarding the Viking age. But I agree that trousers do help a lot with keeping warm.
So many lovely layers. I especially like the hood, and I'm thinking about knitting or crocheting one. Obviously I'm not going to historical accuracy! (grin) Bit it does look so warm and cosy.
You should definitely make yourself a hood 🙂 Super cosy and nice to have this time of the year.
Get an old wool blanket and make one only took me a few hrs. To cut and put it together from an online pattern
❤🎩
Vikings knew how to stay toasty warm! Tusen takk!
Are there vendors you would suggest for gear and clothing?
That kind of depends on what you are looking for 🙂 What kind of gear, and what kind of clothing? (Menswear, womenswear, rich, average, weapons, jewelry, etc)
@@vikingventures3888lower class menswear...tenth century
Yessss! This is why I love wearing dresses in winter. Skirts hold so much more air and work like a cushion of insulation. No heattech trousers could ever keep me as warm as skirts. I am hoping to buy a real huge and long wool skirt at some point to keep myself super warm. I don't wear viking cotoure but even vintage clothes are a lot better than modern clothes in winter
Sometimes many people don't seem to get how warm skirts can be. It's like a small green house or something 😄 Totally agree on the vintage clothing. Better fabrics does wonders.
Not so great for movement...
@@Nocturne22 why? Even servant women used to wear huge long skirts, it's really not that restricting
Winter wind would blow the warmth from under the skirt immediately.
I hope you are okay and doing well🙏🏻 This channel has an awesome feel to it which entices me more and more into the past. I collect viking clothing, jewellery, the tunics, bracelets, traditional hoods etc. I have multiple Mjölnir necklaces which I’ve worn for years but only recently started buying the clothes etc for re-enactment. I have multiple Norse, English-viking & Anglo-Saxon swords now as well as a Norse war-spear & multiple other Norse spearheads. I have around 5 drinking horns which I’ve never used yet haha! I just find them beautiful and feel they look great as ornaments but I intend on using them for drinks in the future with friends during celebrations however I’ve not had alcohol in years now. I also recently bought 2 different war-horns, one simple Anglo-style one, and one more fanciful larger one from Grimfrost! I also have multiple shield-bosses I’m going to use for my own viking shield projects sometime soon, hopefully. I almost forgot I have a viking helmet that I bought a long while ago which is apparently known as a “wolf-helm”! I only just recently bought an arming cap for it & another one spare. I even recently decided I’m going to start collecting silver coins in both the Scandinavian replicas and in the style based on finds from my home of the U.K. Hope to see more awesome uploads from you in the future!👌🏻🙏🏻
Hi! I'm doing good, thank you 😊 Wow, that is quite the collection you have. It's always nice to hear from other enthusiasts. And thank you for the kind words about my videos. I'll try to make more soon. All the best to you!
@@vikingventures3888 You’re very welcome👍🏻 And yeah I have to agree! I wish there were more channels like this & would love to do it myself if I weren’t so private and camera-shy. I could get around it by doing first-person filming and voice-changing software maybe haha.. And yes I’m glad to hear you’ll make more soon-I was worries since you hadn’t made any in a while and this channel has a very nice feel to it so it would’ve been a shame if you couldn’t continue for any reason. Really glad to see you’re well and haven’t succumbed to the organised chaos of the last 3 years, etc. Thanks again, all the best to you too & hope to see more of you in future!🙏🏻
-10°C is only 22°F for my fellow Murican's watching!
Totally agree with your sentiments regards both matters. Very well said. Like the idea of ‘find accurate’
Me too. As a one time archaeologist myself and with a sister and brother in law who are archaeologists/viking re-enactors employed by the city of York which was the UK’s main Viking town I’m keen on historical adequate approaches. I’d love for the term find-based to become common amongst costumers and re-enactors since it points to the archeology or history needed for something to be described as historically adequate/accurate. Otherwise people can end up just relying on famous names to show them how something should be done rather than going to the source material.
I want to live it!
I would love to see how you made that backpack!
Unfortunately I never filmed it, because I made it such a long time ago. But it's just a long thin stem/branch that I steamed and bent into that U-shape. Then there are two horisontal straight pieces going across. One high and one low. Carved some notches in the pieces so they won't slide around and tied everything together. Perhaps I can show it in a future video. 🙂
Those dresses look very drafty. I can't imagine women wearing them in cold weatherwithout some kind of form fitting undergarments
They are much warmer than they look. Since they are so close to the ground the wind does not get underneath the skirt. The only part of the legs that can be a bit cold is the lower leg. And the hose takes caremof that 🙂
How can I find information on where are this events? I will go to Scandinavia next year 😊 thanks
Do you know what parts of Scandinavia, and approximately when? I don't know of any complete list of events. But perhaps I could give a suggestion or two.
You mentioned the linen under dress would have been considered underwear. Did women wear bra and panties in addition to the dress?
No, the under dress is the only underwear women would wear. Bra and panties had not been invented yet.
@@vikingventures3888 thanks, that clears up a lot of questions I had concerning undergarments of ancient times.
I'm planning on felting some shoe liners this autumn or winter.
That is a very good idea 😊
